We took the shorter loop that took us, including my four year old, about an hour and half to complete. Definitely not suitable for strollers, but challenging enough for a casual hiker. Along the way we also enjoyed some views of the valley and even the ocean in the distance!
I love the trails here! First and for most the parking situation is much better compared to like the trails in Whittier-Hellmans Trail. Its next to a school and residential area. So there is plenty of parking. Currently the hours for the summer months are posted as 9am-6pm, but were got there at 8:30 am and it was already open. There are plenty of trails to go of off. You can go to the water tower and if you dare walk all the way to the Whittier tower. There are great visit of the temple Buddhist temple on hacienda and of Rose Hills Mortuary. Its a very scenic and some of the trails are naturally shaded which helps a lot. The trails seem pretty clean. So this is a friendly reminder to be aware of your trash. Lets try not to ruin this piece of nature.... or anything at that matter.I definitely recommend this trail!
Great medium difficulty hike. Hiking shoes recommended for better comfort and grip.
Awesome experience. Everyone on the trail was super friendly.
Horrible, too much greenery, beautiful trails, and open space. There isnt even Instagram spots. Like who wants to looks at the mtns and beach at the same time. WOULD DEFINITELY AVOID
This is my to-go-to trail early in the morning I normally take the Coyote Trail up to Skyline Drive until reaching the Water Tower that’s my turning point. It’s a moderate trail but you definitely get your sweat going, after walking down the steep hill from the water tower I jog through Ahwingna Trail all the way until reaching 7th street. This circuit is 3.78mi I do want to try the other trails in Hacienda hills for an extra mile or two, you still have Puma trail, Native Oak Trail and thats just from this side of town there are other four trails that connect from Whittier too! It’s your pick and choose. These trails are kid friendly, some trails mountain bike accesible as well as horseback riding. The natural habitat really helps disconnecting you from everything and anything down back in the city, really helpful nowadays with so much going on, very thankful to have these hills. Elevation is about 1,161ft, depending on the season you’ll be seeing wildflowers there is poison Ivy you got to watch out for, also being a natural habitat there’s mountain lions (which i’ve yet to encounter), deer (I’ve seen), coyotes, rattle snakes(nearly stepped on one!) just always be aware of tour surroundings at all time. But the views in a clear weather are the ones to breathe in and be thankful for. Blessings and just get out there and enjoy these trails!
Not sure if this is privately owned or not. Puma/Native Oak is not maintained at all. do NOT hike the Puma/Native Oak side.1/ the weeds are overgrown. unless you plan to have a machete with you, it will not be an easy hike.2/ signs are poorly planned on this loop.other than that, stick with ahwingna/coyote trail to enjoy the view and canyon breeze.
Gets really crowded and there people that let dogs off leash and do not clean up after them
Good trail. Bring shoes with good traction. Bring plenty of water.
Nature everywhere! The hiking trails are steep! So bring plenty of water and good hiking shoes. Its lovely right now with tall flowering plants bordering the narrow path.
Especially if you live in Hacienda Heights or Whittier, its so great to have these trails in your own backyard. You can go for a quick walk or a 20-mile hike if you plot out your course. Once you are in the hills, its easy to forget you are still in suburban LA. They are pretty clean, well maintained and just a gem to the local communities.Only recommendation I have is to take water, be mindful of the weather and do not hike alone unless its at a time when there others on the trails. Mountain Lions ARE present. Be safe.
The trail is only a mile long, short, but steep enough to make your heartbeat go up! Nice view of the city once you get to the top.
Great hiking trails.. amazing views. Great place to clear your mind while you excersice.. very well kept trails ...
Great place to hike, they just need better signage. nice views all around though.
I love hiking here, beautiful and clean. Quiet environment not to many people. Awesome views.
An amazing and challenging place to hike! Lots of uphill and downhill!
Intermediate Plus at Moderate Fast pace. Watch out for hills, be prepared to spend 1/2 hr going up the hill from the entrance.
Plenty of trails for hikers and horses to explore the back country hills of Hacienda Heights and whittier. Nicest in early spring before it gets hot before the snakes come out. Take lots of water and some snacks also trash bags and your cell, because there are no facilities of any kind
Safe trails. Trail markers were excellent.
Lovely , clean, welcoming people loved that.....beautiful , amazing period. Smiles smiles...
Quiet and peaceful..even with a few humans roaming around
Easy going, peaceful & very relaxing
Its very good
Dont go on a hot day. Head right on the trail head and come back down coyote trail. If your looking for a harder workout take coyote trail up. Longer steady incline with coyote trail. Vs heading right and youll be going up a couple switchbacks which is more intense but last a much shorter time.
Loved this hike because theres so many different options once you start! But be careful not to get lost
Nice view! Not too many parking spaces, street parking is ok too. We heard about car break in here....not good. This is a great hike, you can see nice view.
Nice trails, some spots narrow but passable.
Good place to hike very friendly hikers
Its a real good trail to definitely get in shape
Great place to hike think or just get a quick breath of fresh air always from the daily.
Good hike and didnt smell as much I thought it would being part of a landfill
Great hike in the middle of suburba! Right off the 60fwy and 7th. You take 7th and it ends at the trail head. Parking is limited inside (only 2 spots) but its across the street from a school and a side street with ample parking. You start up a small incline on gravel then you hit pavement and it goes up hill at a decent incline. If you take this hike and make lefts to loop. back around you will be at about 3 miles, but once you reach the water tower/summit you can take a number of other trails that can go for miles!Usually well traveled to heavy congestion of people hiking, mountain biking, walkers, trail runners and the occasional yogis at each summit point.Last time I went the grass was very tall about 5 ft (may 2019) but normally you get great views of the surrounding cities and on a clear day a view of DTLAHike is easy to moderate depending on your fitness level but its very doable for anyone starting out or just wanting a quick workout
Its amazing to enjoy nature and hiking
Easy hike
Always a workout no matter how in shape you are.
I have twice visited the Hacienda Hills Country Club for private parties. One was the 90th birthday celebration for a retired Secret Service agent, and the other was for an informal get-together of retired agents. In both cases the staff was most accommodating in providing adequate space for us to meet, and make presentations, as well as providing meals from their menu rather than having to make selections in advance. The food was excellent, and the service attentive. We did not feel rushed and everyone had a good time.
Great place to run️ Wish the there were doggie bags at trailhead and more pet owners would clean up after their pets
Like this trails, short, just around 1.5 miles complete a circle. Good elevation level fit for all ages.
Omg i so love this trail. Its super challenging ! Make sure to bring hiking sticks or poles. I bumped into a rattlesnake and was extremely scared. Thank God some local residents were there to help out.
Great today
Great little hiking trail
Best place to burn calories
Great place to go hiking with a friend.
Good hike. Not that long but connects to other trails you can go to
Hiked the Awahgina trail in Whittier. Beautiful vistas of the valley and San Bernardinos. Go early and you have the trail almost to yourself. Reserve opens at 9am
Beautiful scenic view..
So beautiful. Love the hills.
The Coyote trail is pretty difficult even if youre in shape. Id rate this a 6 or 7 on a 10 difficulty for hiking. Pretty much uphill the whole way.The regular trail gradually rises but doesnt seem to be too difficult. Thats more like a 3
Very nice hike....
Nice hike for us and Chester. Good workout and clean
Love too hike the coyote trail
I love this place, the hiking trails are maintained, picnic areas are clean, staff on premises. This is a limited access preserve, so few homeless get in and if they do they are escorted out of the secluded areas for violation of the no off trail activities rule.
The beauty of wild life Snake lizard squirrels lots of wildflowers
Nice hike. Several inclines. Loop of about 90-120 min depending on speed. Closed 48 hours after rain. Spectacular view.
Good hiking course. If u like hiking,an hour and half walking.
Good trail for a weekend hike. Not too crowded when we went around noon time on New Years Day. You can do a short 2.6 mile round trip hike in about an hour. There is a nice view of the San Gabriel Valley when you reach the Skyline trail at the top. The trails link to other systems on the Whittier side.
Best hiking spot in all of the greater los angeles area
Great Variety in trails, difficulty, and length.
Beautiful scenery and a very challenging course throughout the mountain!
Awesome hiking
Great spot to go hike
Love hiking here
This is my go to place for hiking. And I would consider this to be an average hiking trail, I see people of all ages come through here. Regardless of that... (coming from a couch potato) I almost died half way up for my first few times. But it is still well worth the hike because of the views. I always take the Coyote Trail which is a bit more challenging. Which then connects to Turnball canyon and also leads you to that local famous water tank. And yes there are ways of reaching there. So be sure to look at the map.
Favorite hike
Nice trail that goes through the hacienda hills
Nice park but hours of operation are idiodic!
Best place to park is on seventh street near the elementary school and walk to the gate. Theres other trail entrances but Im not too sure where they are.
REALLY NICE hike from both sides. Not too long but just enough to get a good work out ;)
My friends and I just found out that the trail is now not open until 9am. It is so sad for us that like to get exercise in before work. 9am is to late to go hiking especially during the summer.
Dope views for good times. Its a nice chill spot to hang with your bros and gals. Its spooky at first but its a popular spot and more people come up. So yeah its worth a try.
Good place for a trail run...I could see it getting packed on weekend mornings. 1st time here...will be back!
Plenty of parking....and this trail is one of the hardest I ever went threw
The hike is a little steeper than advertised lol... But great nonetheless. Awesome views.
Uh I love hiking
Amazing place to burn some calories!!! Lots of incline and there are 2 different trails to choose from!!! Love hiking here
Great place for some quick cardio. Nice reset during lunch.
Great hike if you want a quick but efficient work out. Gets your heart rate going and your legs will be on fire.
Hiking in these hills for over 15 years before the iron gate was added. All becuz of social media and stupid people who do respect the neighborhood.
Good mostlt shady walking path if you go early. The path is very dusty and steep in some places. Should wear hiking boots if you have them.
Natural trails of various difficulty.
From the top of the hill you can see a beautiful view and you can go a different cities by walk
There is the gym but this place is unique. A workout not for the faint of heart. I love it
My mother-in-law lives in this area and there are nice, older homes here. There is a pretty nice park near here, next to the elementary school.
Nice place
Great Trails Maintenance crew
Love coming here for a quick hike!! Recommend it to anyone trying to lose weight!!! Its a lot of uphill!!
Not bad ..there is a few parking spots..you will have to park in the streets
This is my go to hiking trail its near my house, has a good variety in intensity in trails.
Nice trail, ideal for a family walk.
