My Pre-K enjoyed a spooky knock on the door, and rock-scrambling around back during a quick stop to stretch our legs.An otherwise scenic spot, marred by an unfortunately-close road, graffiti, and litter. I guess doofuses have been around for a long time. Treasure this spot – it wont survive much more neglect.

The old ruins of a cornmeal and flour mill sitting on the edge of a quiet creek off the side of a busy highway. The huge wheel in the woods as we passed by is what caught my immediate attention out of my peripheral. The structure is on the national historic site list; the wheel sits on the opposite bank from the mill and the existing dock has all but crumbled away. The structure is condemned and trespassing is not advised, it is unstable. It is still a beautiful site and the mill used to be quite popular in the area and produced much flour and corn meal it’s sales were high next to the cotton production. The exact date of building is not noon but it first began operating in approximately 1814. A beautiful sight to behold; a past history. The home across the street bears a mailbox with the name Gilreath.

A total step back in time. Get out and walk around the building to enjoy the view of the larger wheel that drove the machines. Certainly worth the 10 minutes out of your busy day.

My 4th Great Grandfather Joel Bruce owned this land and built this mill in 1812. It was sold to Perry David Gilreath in 1890.

I only rated it that high because of its historical value, but you cannot get out of your car to see it. Its on a main highway and hard to even slow down to see.

It was the best honor I could have to get to live in Perry Duncan Gilreaths home across from Gilreath Mill on 2358 North Highway 101, during my college years, from 1987 to 1991. His daughter whom I called Granny, Mrs Earline Gilreath White, hosted me with room and board. I did the yard choirs around the house and looked after the historic Gilreath Mill in return. While the new Hungerford generation were the heritors, I was more inclined with the Gilreath antiquity. Mrs Earline Gilreaths tales about the Gilreath Mill and the High Sheriff were extraordinary piece of history. She walked me through the past as if live. It was mesmerizing. I often asked questions about the chronicled biographies and tales. Her grandfather, Perry Duncan Gilreath, was the first elected Sheriff of Greenville county after the civil war and served for 24 years.  After him, Mrs Earline Gilreaths father, Jefferson Davis Gilreath was elected as the second Sheriff of Greenville county. Listening to so many details of Gilreath history walked me through those gravel roads in black and white.
