I do not understand why the persons who complain about being hassled by security had such an experience. I have visited the museum countless times over the past 15 years or more and never had that experience. I’m guessing that there must have been something suspicious looking about their behavior. On less busy days docents have been wonderful about answering questions and offering interesting little tidbits about the artists, etc. I make it a point to visit every time I am in town.

The display of art is well done, but for Greenville being such a large city I certainly expected more art to be on display. There are several floors, and they also have an elevator inside to assist people with disabilities. The museum is bright and has restrooms on several floors. There is definitely not enough variety.Even when you stand and bask in the beauty it won’t take you long to get through here.

Nicely laid out - easy to follow the pattern of the art. Clean. Staff are polite and helpful. Restrooms were clean.Good mix of eclectic, abstract, classic, oil, sculpture, darker works etc - everyone will find something. They did have a LOT of more abstract work which I’m not fond of but if that’s your thing, you’ll be quite happy. :)Admission is free. Paid parking.

This museum is absolutely amazing! To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect, and it passed all my expectations. There is art that dates back to the 14th century, up until last year. And it’s free! I definitely recommend going, and parking in the parking lot shared by the library and the surrounding buildings.

We came in during the week and felt like we had the place to ourselves. Clean and easy to walk around it was nice to be able to stroll at our own leisure throughout the three floor building. Multiple artists are on display and you get a real sense that a careful amount of consideration was taken in curating all of the pieces. Highly recommend taking a look at what they have to offer.

The museum itself was very nice and so was most of the staff. However I did feel like every time I turned around there was a security guard that was right behind us. I certainly did not appreciate that. I am a medical provider and one of the largest Healthcare Systems in North Carolina. I dont feel like I should have to wear my white coat to be respected.

I have volunteered in such places and I have never experienced such restrictions . Overall its a kool place to explore.

I have never felt so uncomfortable and unwanted. My husband and I took our two children as well as our two nephews just now. We were literally followed around. Our children, ages 7-11 noticed it and asked why we were being followed. The old man on the first floor, I guess he was security, was giving us the death stare as he followed us. I thought we would give our children the experience of seeing the art in Greenville, but I guess it’s reserved for adults. Our kids were not ill-behaved, and the maltreatment began as soon as we walked in. We weren’t even given a chance to prove that our kids were behaved. As we walked onto the fourth floor, we were met by two more “security” men. They immediately began barking the rules at us again. They had clearly been told we were on our way and were ready for us. They were all communicating via headsets. We have been to museums all over the country, and we have NEVER been treated this way. You’re not the Smithsonian! And the Smithsonian, by the way, doesn’t stalk children. They allow visitors, even children, to enjoy the works without being made to feel like intruders. Shame on you! Your people need better training.

The most unwelcoming museum I have ever been in. I have been in museums all over this country from DC to Chicago to LA and have never been followed around by staff before. There were some beautiful pieces of art but I could not enjoy them with staff literally standing behind me and following me from gallery to gallery. I would suggest this museum invest in protective glass or boundary ropes if it is that worried about the art. Some customer service training would go along way as well.

This museum consistently has excellent art on display and often has excellent exhibits. The museum displays a lot of artwork by Jasper Johns and Andrew & Jamie Wyeth, and currently has a temporary exhibit of Renaissance-era art (on loan from Bob Jones University). The staff at this museum were the rudest I have ever met. I was standing back looking at a painting on a wall further than the 3 required feet and was scolded by not 1, not 2, but 3 staff members about being too close to a painting on the opposite wall (was probably about 2.5 ft)! This place is RIDICULOUS. They treated me and my colleague like we were criminals and after breaking the bubble they followed us around the empty museum for the next hour, whispering into their mics. I don’t know what kind of power trip they are on but this place isn’t the Met or the Smithsonian or the Louvre. I can see why this museum was empty of visitors.

The building is an beautiful study of board formed concrete and modern architecture. The exhibits are free and have a cool variety of art. This place would have gotten 5 stars except that the staff was overbearing and discriminatory. We we standing in line behind a older white couple and the lady had a large hand bag. She asked if she needed to leave it. The docent told her that she was fine and it was really reserved for large bulky bags. Less than 30 seconds later he was rudely telling my companion that she needed to leave her small see through mesh bag behind because it had 2 straps and was considered a backpack. He showed up at another part of the exhibit and stood staring at us completely detracting from the artwork. Another docent stopped my companion and told her she needed place her camera strap around her neck. Another group was scolded for standing to close to a window. A trained and efficient security team operates invisibly. This rabble would barely qualify as janitors. They detract from the beautiful experience they are supposed to be preserving

Beautiful exhibits but beware of the over baring staff who are also not educated on the art they watch so carefully over... I stood close to a wall and door way to take a photo of my daughter across the way and was told I was too close when I was not even near an exhibit. The lady loudly would say Maam you are too close she followed us around it was very uncomfortable. Then when we went upstairs a man started following us telling us these cameras talk. Even if you are abiding by their three feet rule if you dont want to be harassed maybe stand five feet away from EVERYTHING!

Horrible. My daughter needed to visit here for a college project. I was excited to go because I have never been. We have lived here 18years. It felt like prison. Guards followed us everywhere. Seriously what were we going to do pocket a painting, they were all huge. Watching from acrossed a room would have been sufficient. Part of her project was to take a picture beside her favorite painting. She stayed more than an arms length away, but that was not enough for these guards. One came stomping acrossed the room & started yelling that we were to close to the painting even though she wasnt near it & her back was to it. We had enough at this point and left. We will never go back. The workers seriously need to relax and I understand theres rules to protect the artwork but people should be able to enjoy it without feeling as if they are in a prison.

The museum could be so much better. They need to get more traveling exhibits to keep things fresh. The art in this museum doesnt change very often. Its also disappointing that none of the museum staff can explain the art or even the techniques. They have several security guards but no one is available to answer questions. They have a staff of over 20 people who seem to know very little about art but their focus is on business...what? They need to be more proactive in helping people understand the art so they can appreciate it. They could also benefit by having something for children. Overall its a bit stale and needs to evolve.
