Beautiful, quiet wooded walking trails. The Great Heron Loop trail goes by the river and is extremely peaceful.

Nice park with a well maintained loop trail of just under 4 miles. The trail is pretty flat throughout and has good views of a marsh land at the headwaters of the Haw river. The trail doesnt get very close to the river, which is disappointing. The trails are very well marked. There is a bathroom at the trail head but its a pit type, and was either dug too shallow or else in need of pumping out when I was there in June 2020. Theres a nice conference facility on the property (it used to belong to the Episcopal diocese) used for environmental education; we did not visit that part. Scenery along the trail is not special, but its a nice walk in the woods.

Pretty park. Good hiking choices as far as short and easy or long and moderate.

My husband and I were looking for a place to get in a little walking. I thought, because it was a state park it would be well kept. It needs work. It was extremely muddy, with pools of water, and no way to go around. It would be much better if they went filled the mud holes with some gravel, to make the trails a little less muddy. Or, I need to find paved park areas. If you like coming out muddy, go for it.

Overall a good experience but the trail is 3.2 miles and theres only 2 picnic tables or places to sit, one at the entrance to the walking trail and the other one is located 2 miles in. There should be more benches or places to sit throughout the whole trail for elderly people and younger kids. Also in a lot of places the trail is incredibly narrow with steep inclines on each side that could be disastrous if someone slipped in the tiniest way and fell down the incline. There were also places that needed to be cleared after recent storms so hopefully that will be done very soon and in low lying areas there was a lot of mud in the trail so you had to walk off trail to get around it. It was peaceful and really clean though which was so nice. I would definitely go back but only when its not so hot outside cause in 85 degree weather today it was kinda miserable at times.

Remote, quiet, 99% shade on the trail, narrow trail in places with few roots and rocks, compared to Umstead SP, for trail running.

We didnt take the time to hike the roughly 3 mile loop trail but it appears well marked. There is plenty of parking and restrooms as well as several picnic tables.

Pretty, easy trail through woods. A few hills with about 50 foot elevation change. Decent restroom in parking lot and picnic tables at parking lot, and one on the trail. Worth going back to if live nearby. The marsh area is the starting place of the Haw river

Well maintained trails, easy walking, quiet. We were on a guided tour with Kelly today and she was so knowledgeable about the park and its natural wonders. We had a fun time & will be back for the longer blue heron loop trail later.
