I have tried to buy local when possible during these times. It was my first time into Howell’s gun shop in late May of this year. I went in looking for a red dot sight for one of my pistols. I ended up buying a green dot sight. The employees were all very nice and helpful. So I decided to order a new Sig. pistol also. Almost two months later the pistol comes in. While I am doing paper work, I ask about getting put on a list to get ammo for the new pistol. I was told it was their policy they won’t put names on a list to buying ammo. Howell’s gun shop is almost 20 miles out of my way to go there and no reason to ever go past there. So to drive there to see if they have ammo is not going to happen. They had no problem taking my money for green dot sight and new pistol. So for them not to get me ammo. Not impressed!! Chances of me ever going back??? Highly unlikely.Mike,Westbrook Maine

My girlfriend wanted to try to shoot a firearm while in the U.S.So we just showed up. As we both were total newbie we were a little nervous.But as soon as we spoke to an employee I felt better.Everybody was very nice and friendly from the get go.We had a blast.And I would like to say a special thank you to Bob who was really nice and patient.He also reminded us to take pictures because we totally forgot since we were pretty nervous.I recommend this place very stongly and once again thanks to Bob.Martin and Catherine

I’m looking for an archery range I can use because I live in a crowded area and can’t sling arrows in my back yard. I remember a friend a few years ago told me about their archery range so I figured I’d search them. A quick google search had howells pop up first on the list. Their website mentions their pro shop but nothing about a range. Still determined, I emailed them and sent them a Facebook message inquiring about the archery range. The email sent me an automated message saying that their email didn’t work and after two weeks I still having received a Facebook message back from them. Finally, I tried calling them. After explaining myself the gentleman on the phone told me the store was too busy to answer my question. Howells needs to be much more clear and willing to inform their potential customers inquiring about services they may or may not offer.I’ll update my review upon contact with Howells, as I’m not out to just sling mud. Also note that the one star review is solely based off from my experiences with the archery department, timely customer service, and lack of information. Their firearms range and shop will eventually be reviewed separately.

I recently purchased a handgun from Howells. The staff was very helpful, and knowledgeable about their guns. Their prices were also very fair, especially given the recent surge in demand.

Shooting at Howells has been an incredible experience. Having been raised in an area of Brooklyn NYC where shootouts were common, I had an innate fear of firearms. This place completely changed my viewpoint on firearms within the first minutes of being there. They were kind, welcoming, helping and went above and beyond to help me feel secure at the range. Their emphasis on safety and education far exceeded my expectations. My visit was supposed to be a once in a lifetime thing to mark off my bucket list, but I now regularly visit. My nephew came up from NYC for a visit and the staff did an amazing job setting him up at the range. This was a highlight of his trip to maine and he looks forward to return during his next trip!

Staff is always nice to us. I see complaints about not being able to reserve ammo but it’s a national shortage.... first come first serve bud!! You can’t reserve ammo online why would you be able to do it in store???

The staff at Howells is fantastic. During the COVID 19 Pandemic many businesses are struggling to get what the need from distributers and to keep their shelves stocked, due to that fact the staff at Howells helped me find something they had on site already that was even better than the gun I originally had in mind. Miserable disappointment. I called one afternoon to ask about 12 guage shotgun shells and had a discussion with an older gentleman who explained what I needed after telling him of my new shotgun. He said he had the shells I neeed. The next day I went in. The younger man was uninterested in helping me. I explained I was not experienced with shotguns and t bgg at I had been told they had the shells in stock. He had no interest in helping me and insisted they didnt have what I needed. Too bad, I was also going to sign up for handgun lessons. Now Ill just go to windham.

I have been to many ranges both professional and armature. I have been coached by the best and neighborhood pros. This is a top notch outfit.Family members Had a day planned for my birthday and because it was a nasty day we decided on Howells for plan B. It was a huge success. My first time here and everything was done professionally. Tip top safety first. A couple of my family were real raw and had not shot hardly at all and others not in years. Pointers were offered in a friendly professional manner that made a huge difference in their understanding, handling and accuracy.Prices were very good due to a promotion that they had offered. Convinced me and the rest to return and make this a regular destination.

Decent variety of weapons, ammo and accessories for sale. Very disappointed with some of the staff (cant speak about all of them). But the ones Ive encountered always gave me attitude and terrible service. I would ask them questions about certain firearms and they would either act like they dont care or gave me attitude. Same when buying a couple magazines and ammo. The service alone has kept me away from going back.

Nice looking range facilities with decent sidearms and long guns to rent. On the sales side, different situation.Certain members of the sales staff was too busy discussing their upcoming shifts (Or love lives) to be bothered offering customer service. Sorry to make you engage in a core job responsibility.Went there expressedly to inspect one item. Inspected the rifle and inquired about price flexibility. Pointed out few key concerns regarding the condition of the rifle: fact it was missing a mid-rib bead, and it had been there for close to a year. Might as well discussed these with a brick wall. Provided some story Long time customer., On consignment, and Oh, hes going to take it back soon!.Made a point to advise him that the offering had been there for a long time, been listed online several times with no response, and they should let the customer know someone was finally interested. Nada, same sad song from him. Clearly just not interested in even trying to facilitate a sale.After that, he was not clearly no longer interested in discussing any of the other items for sale. Actually told me some used reloading equipment and supplies were for him as he had use of them. Oh, running a museum here? I quipped. No reply.But then he came right out and inquired about the two items I mentioned for a potential trade. Let him know clearly that yes, theyre available, and at a price he wasnt going to or able to pay. Additionally it was made clear I wasnt interested in doing business with him or Howells, ever.Thank you for your time and good luck was what I left him with. Im already moving on to purchase another option.If you go, go for the range facilities. Great place to enjoy your firearms

Just visited Howells for the first time and I have to say I had a fantastic time. I came it to purchase my first real handgun. I worked with Don who was wonderful. He listen to and answered all of my questions and concerns and in the end made a recomendation that was a perfect fit. He helped me stay on budget and made sure I got plenty of hands on experience before I gave him my hard earn money! I would recommend Don and Howells to anyone. Also I like the service after the sale by inviting me back for classes and range time. Five stars!

Excellent service, friendly owner and staff.Traded a pistol here , bought ammo ,used the quality indoor range. Recently bought sights from their website had a slight mix up on the order which was completely ironed out by the owner straight away no problem and had them fitted by their gunsmiths (for free). Each time I’ve received professional, superb service. There’s a friendly feel to the place plus you are nearly always greeted by one of the staffs dogs who are also super cool. Love this place.

They tried to screw me so bad on a sale they wouldn’t even look me in the eye. Take your money elsewhere.

The place is big but could be a lot smaller for the small amount of inventory. It leaves everything looking kind of sparse. Not a big selection of handguns; didn’t even bother looking over the rifles but they had a handful of them hanging up on the wall and a few hunting rifles up the stairs.It looked like they had more rental handguns than what they actually sell, so I guess it might be a good place to try out a gun. Didn’t go into the range.Prices were fairly on-point with what I’ve seen around. Comparable to a certain big box store nearby. I’ve seen cheaper prices from better-stocked stores, but all-in-all about what you’d expect for the area.Staff seemed friendly enough and made sure to ask me if I needed help with anything.Overall, a pretty basic selection with so-so pricing, but with a staff that doesn’t thumb their nose at you. Personally I probably don’t have a reason to go back, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check it out if you’re in the area.

A family member took the basic hand gun training and hated it. They did not feel the need to post a review but I did. According to them It was very clear from the beginning that both female instructors were pro NRA and pro combat style training and was trying to prove that they had more testosterone than any man.. They made comments about their trainees and the militaristic yelling at their students while they fired their weapons was inappropriate for a basic training course. I took a basics course off of rt 302 that trained you to respect your weapon, no yelling or comments were made and I was trained to only use my weapon as a last resort, the complete opposite of this training. Would be nice if I could rate zero stars for this training session.

Howells is the best gun shop / indoor range in the state. Their customer service is top notch. Kathleen out front made my girlfriend and I feel extremely welcomed. She answered all of our questions and helped find my girlfriend the perfect fire arm for the range. Once we went inside the range, we were welcomed by Shane. He is outstanding. He made us feel comfortable, aware and was very helpful. He was super knowledgeable in all aspects of fire arm safety and firing. I would recommend this place to everyone, beginning gun owners and experienced ones. Keep up the great work!

Went to Howells for the first time two weeks ago. The staff, especially Sam I believe it was, was very helpful and patience with our two girls 10 and 9 and it being their very first time ever holding or firing a firearm. He made sure we knew what we were doing, answered any questions we had, and that we were all safe. Me and my family will definitely be back very soon.

Made my first visit to this business the other week as I was in the market for a new firearm and wanted to take advantage of their try before you buy. Ryan couldnt have been more helpful as he patiently answered all my questions and offered valuable insight, even going so far as to offer to let me try his own personal carry sidearm as it wasnt a model among their rental stock but was one of the models I had an interest in. Talk about going above and beyond! With the help of Howells I was able to make a decision I am very happy with.

Theyre really starting to go downhill. Getting very picky about Ammo. Getting picky about how people shoot even though theyve been there ten times before. Honestly Im just kind of sick of paying money and never having a good experience here. There was a time where I went to Howells when they first reopen I had an amazing experience and then I had a couple more great experiences and it was a great place to bring new shooters and there are some staff there that look at me like this guy knows what hes doing and then theres the newer staff that are so damn by the book it just takes the fun out of any of it. Im just going to take my business back over to Summer Haven where its free theyre always improving it and it really doesnt matter what you shoot there

My girlfriend and I took an entry level handgun class with Tatiana. She was friendly, patient and very helpful. Really appreciated how informative and safety oriented the class was. Would highly recommend classes with her! The indoor range was really nice and the shop had a great selection on hand. The guys in the shop seemed a bit intimidating. That would be be my only constructive criticism. Good experience overall!

So I had not been to Howells in almost a year, and went very recently to check out the new indoor range that was built. Wow! This place got a huge face lift. It was a great shop before, but now its incredible. The range itself is very polished and modern, the staff are GREAT, down to earth, and very friendly. The firearms selection is also top notch. In my opinion, this is the best gun shop in Southern Maine.

Have bought several weapons at Howells and gotten to know the staff reasonably well. We shoot at the new range from time to time and it is very nice and well run.I find the staff exceptional with good advice if you ask for it. Every experience we have had there has been pleasurable and we expect to trade there for a LONG time.

First time to the shooting range for several of us ladies last night. The staff and the owners were very customer service oriented and provided and overall wonderful time for our group. We will be returning in the future.

Disappointing visit. I usually talk with owner. Today he wasnt there. The guys that were there were more interested in shooting the hay then selling me a gun. Website said they had the one I wanted in stock but was told they would have to order it. Guess I need to take my business elsewhere.Too bad I liked doing business locally. I called ahead told them what I had for a shot gun that I was looking to sell (Have another project I was looking to fund) I get there and they say oh were not really looking to buy any shotguns right now Id offer you 50 bucks ITS A 300 DOLLAR SHOT GUN. I know they have to make money but come on! So while I was there I had my side arm holstered with the safety on and I asked if they would entertain me with a quote for it, I told them it was chambered. I reached for it and the guy start pulling his gun on me! Then had the Nerve to offer me 75.00 when I just bought it for 400!!! They are nothing but a glorified pawn shop and I will never step foot in their store again.Adding to this to clarify to the response by the owner My weapon was not pulled out of my holster all I did was reach down and unsnapped my holster and started to pinch the grip to hand it over. I never said his weapon was drawn he lifted is jacket and had his hand on his pistol that is as I stated starting to draw his weapon. and when I ask for a offer on my loaded handgun not a single person in that store said yeah for sure lets go to the range so we can safely unload it, and if that is store policy he then proceeded to unload it in the retail space so maybe it is time to reevaluate your employees and send them through the proper training of your store policy. As I stated in my original review I will not be back. Its sad when someone would rather do business with Cabelas than a local gun shop. Luckily for me there are Gun shops that are a little bit further but worth the extra drive than to stop at your store.

I love this place, best indoor range in the state of Maine. Their rental program is rather stupid though, if I walk in the door with a range bag full of my own guns why would I need a rental to commit suicide? Why refuse to rent to someone who comes in alone. Other than that I love the place.

I paid for and scheduled to attend a training class. I was unable to make the class and left four or five messages to let them know I could not make it to the class and to request a refund. I NEVER received a return call or email and did not receive a refund. I will not do business with this organization ever again. Terrible to zero customer service. PATHETIC!

On my second class here and I will be signing up for more. Very welcoming to novice women shooters.

I had a great experience here, the range staff are not overbearing and absolutely willing to give you advice, while not stepping on an experienced shooters toes or feeling like hes over your shoulder unless you want him to be. I got some great AR shooting advice that some people pay large amounts of money for classes to get. I think they have odd membership benefits, forcing you to pay for the range even as a member (but at a fairly hefty discount at least), but a membership also offers FFL transfer discounts and the like. Really interesting and different.The range safety video was short and to the point: BE SAFE. Very common sense stuff. Follow the rules and have a blast, dont follow the rules and get kicked out, then write one star reviews here. Haha. Great place, local business, wont shoot anywhere else!

My favorite store in Gray. Nicest and most trustworthy folks Ive met in a long while. This place reminds me of the gun shop I used to go to with my dad as a kid - it was a gun shop run out of a home. Good selection of used guns. Prices are competitive to big box stores and many online places - theyll try to find the best price for you from their distributor. My husband and I initially thought of dealing with a big box gun store (begins with C), but when associates from that store told us they were too busy training new hires to order any guns we thought twice. Then it came time for a transfer. That big box store kept on giving us different versions of the procedure and costs. We decided to give Howells a try. Best decision ever. They took great care of me and provided quick service for our guns, whether it was a transfer, a gunbroker transaction, a shipping, a repair, a special order, or an NFDN purchase. Whenever I drive towards Gray from Windham, the moment I see Howells, I feel Ive reached home already.

The range is new, clean and the staff very pleasant and polite. I will absolutely be going back.

If you are going for archery save the time and dont go. I went there today to get a dozen arrows and the archery shop was a complete mess hardley any equipment for bows and the bows they had were dusty and very few. I got to choose between 3 kinds of arrow shafts that were on display becuse aparently no one was in the archery department except for some kid cleaning shelfs down by the rifels. I needed arrows so i decided on the the only 6 they had of eastons for the size I need. I asked the kid if he can cut arrows seeing i wandered around for 20 minutes with not one employee asking if I needed help. He was wooo no way I wont even attempt that and the guy that does it is teaching a class for the next 3 hours. But he said he go ask someone, he came back in 5 minutes and said someone would be up to do it in just a minute. I was hesitant but said ok, so I waited 15-20 more minutes and no one showed up. So I got fed up and left and not one employee asked me if I was all set or needed any help as I walked out the door and took my business to the shop down the road. As far as firearms go I looked at a couple rifles and the prices seemed ok and within range of what I expected but I get my firearms from costal. I didnt bother looking at any hand guns or the rest of the store. I went there for the archery department and as far as I can tell they want nothing to do with it anymore. So if you need your bow tuned up or need arrows or any archery equipment I would head to lakeside in yarmouth that is were I went and got the service and the dozen arrows I wanted all cut to legnth and friendly people to help you. Or you can hit cabelas, beans, or dicks.I will not be in Howells ever again.

My mother asked them to ship several long arms which I inherited after her husband died. It was supposed to be an FFL-to-FFL transfer since it was across state lines. Corresponding with them was a challenge and they lost the copy of the receiving FFLs license or couldnt open the file. Once they finally shipped it, it arrived with poor packaging and there wasnt a signature required by UPS so it was just left by the receivers front door. The receiving FFL said he had never seen guns shipped in such a bad way....and hes been in the business for a long time.After they were opened, we found that the stock on one of the most expensive guns, an older model, was broken and was $100 to fix. I had this taken care of locally and it seemed like a very fair price. Tom at Howells assured me several times that he would either get it paid for by UPS (at least they insured it) or write me a check directly. This was many weeks ago and Im pretty sure I got hosed.Looking at other reviews, as long as you go there and pay for something brand new or some kind of instruction (both of which you can do elsewhere) youll be fine. But dont expect good follow-up care after they get your money.

Wont ever buy a gun from them again. Bought a new gun. Brought it home noticed some wear marks on the slide. Went back in and asked if I had bought a used gun. Guy went all rage mode on me. Saying they dont scam people. Not what I was implying at all. Don helped me out after dude took my gun and continued to have a hissy fit and tell me to look at all the other m&p that they have, and how the wear marks were on those too. Either way his hissy fit has sparked my curiosity about how new my gun acctualy is. Perhaps he took my slide out and put his slide in. Also I did not get a test bullet from Smith and Wesson in my box which I found very strange.

Just went to see John the gunsmith, can not say enough good things about all the men and women there do not hesitate to go.

I am not sure what happened to the one guy that has written the 2 bad reviews but nothing like this has happened to me when ordering a gun. I drive about 75 miles round trip while going past several other gun stores to purchase my weapons from Howells. I have nothing but good experiences with Howell, Mac and Mike every single time I stop in or call. even if I am just looking for information they always take the time needed to answer my questions. there is no pressure, they seem very knowledgable on their products, they are the dealers for most popular manufacturers and have the best prices I have found in a local shop. they seem very competitive with online sales as well when you add in the fee required for the FFL used and the shipping charges. what is not to like about that

I ordered a DPMS LR308, placed a deposit, and received it very fast. I then bought a Glock Gen 4 21 and 27, because of the price and service. Two weeks ago I bought my wife a small Walther P22 that was a GREAT DEAL! Next Im going to grab a 12 gauge, because they have a great selection and pricing on them.

Seemed very friendly at first and when we paid cash to order our gun, the advertisment of 2 to 4 days to get it in should be removed, so called stocking dealer ( just because your distributer has it doesnt make you a stocking dealer) took 2 weeks to come from south carolina. Everytime i called to check the status of my order was told tommorow, when finally arrived the taller shaved headed guy that we dealt with first wouldnt even look us in the eye, he just rudely pushed it across the counter and had me sign for it. At time of ordering was repetedly told by him the piece only came with one mag and i had already researched from colt of what came with it, he ordered two extra mags that were very expensive( even though i kept telling him the gun comes with 2 already) and never told me about the promo that would give me another mag and holster( again found on my own on the fact site) and knew at time of ordering. Im sorry, but for supposedly being this big fully stocked shop they really had nothing more than my lgs have they just spread them around to fill cases. The prices were nothing to rave about as my local shops and cabelas has better prices and way more in stock, not worth the drive as we could get better service close to home. Very disappointed as so many people bring them up as a go to place, and also saw a gentleman storm out the same day we were there ordering for whatever he was dealing with.

I went in to look at Blue Label Glock 43s. They handed me one and it was rusty as can be. They were very abrasive and unprofessional. I expect much more out of a blue label glock dealer.

They took my order for a Henry Pump .22 3 years ago and took a $25 Deposit from me and never got me the gun or returned my $25 Deposit. Shady dealings at that place.
