An outstanding museum focusing on what makes Gloucester unique. You can easily spend 2-3 hours here. I highly recommend taking advantage of a tour with a docent. The 60-minute tour was informative and engaging. After you are finished at the museum, walk toward the water a couple of blocks and youll have plenty of great cafes and local shops to choose from.

This is a great little museum in downtown Gloucester. The Winslow Homer exhibit was really well done, showing his time on Cape Ann & the various items, people, themes that inspired his work during that period - beautifully done! The permanent collection highlights Gloucesters long history with the sea & includes living artists, something I really appreciated!

Charming regional museum. There is parking across the street and its a short walk from the commuter rail so highly accessible. The entrance is wheelchair accessible accessible. The experience of this museum is very pleasing. I like my museums full of unexpected corners and varied spaces and the Cape Ann museum does not disappoint. You can wander from intimate galleries of artwork and folk and historical art and artifacts into soaring spaces accented by monumental sculptures in settings of warm, honey brown woodwork so the overall sensual atmosphere is delightful and stimulating. The artwork itself ranges from the classical fine arts to the raw, daily expression of folk art and artifacts. Whimsy and profundity are side by side, giving a rich and textured feel for the region.Parking is metered lot. There is a reasonable fee for museum entrance. If you plan a day trip, you can find a range of dining nearby. I am planning a return before long to try the Portuguese restaurant not far from the museum since Portuguese fish stew is one of the joys of life. You can feed mind, soul, and body on the same trip!

We had a lovely time at the Cape Ann Museum this past week, viewing the Winslow Homer exhibit, which was beautifully hung and researched. The curators went to great lengths to find work from this period of Homers career and put together an intelligent, engaging show. I have two small criticisms regarding CAM. There is only one small restroom on the first floor of the museum, which had a line waiting, so to access the other restroom, I had to walk from the third floor all the way to the cellar. My husband and I drove from Cape Cod to see the exhibit and spent a good deal of time viewing the work. It may seem petty, but there were no chairs or benches in the exhibit, and since we are older, I walked out of the exhibit twice to sit in chairs and take a break in another part of the museum. So, while the show was wonderful, a few small conveniences for the viewing audience would have made for a better museum experience.

Gloucesters sailing history is elegantly on display at our wonderful Cape Ann Museum. The building is deceptively small from the outside, but its many rooms hold much of interest, including the schooners and sailing ships portrayed by local and visiting artists. My friend Armand Sindoni, a fine Gloucester artist himself, would surely approve. Go see it all and take someone. There is much to enjoy, including a one of a kind seafood cookbook by our local Justin Demetri at the Museum bookstore.

World class collection in a beautiful, clean & spacious museum. Saw special exhibit, Homer at the Beach: A Marine Painters Journey, 1869-1880. Have renewed respect for Winslow Homers masterful use of pencil, ink, watercolor & oil paints. Also revisited six different American coastal towns of the northeast, historically and visually.

An extremely well curated museum focused the artistic heritage of the Cape Ann region. A worthwhile focus! This is a region with a genuine claim on our attention. The history of work (fishing and quarries) and immigration provide context that works well to hold our attention. We spent a bit over an hour in the galleries, saw a lot, left with more to see. Well be back.

We loved the paintings of Fitz Henry Lane. There were lots of other things to see too, not just paintings, like a one- person boat which crossed the Atlantic. Lots of local history. We chose it during Free Fun Friday because it was relatively close to our home in Maine and we were tired from our weeks activities. We were pleasantly surprised by the collection and spent a lot more time there than we anticipated.

A fabulous Hidden Gem in downtown Gloucester. We expected a two or three room Museum in a home. This is a major Museum facility in a modern building located over three different floors and connected to a historical home that is available for tours with a guide as well. Theres a great amount of seafaring exhibits including lighthouses, boats and Marine paintings, but also exhibits related to printmaking, music-making, and photography. This Museum is on a par with the Peabody Essex Museum, but of course much smaller comparedto that amazing facility.

Eecstopped inn the Court Yard of CA Museum to point out the works of George Demetrios whose fountain sculpture of his wife and renowned Folly Cove Group Member was draped in its winter cloak. This small group of distinguished are enthusiast want to enter the lobby and get a sense of things. We did not have time for a full tour. On entering alone, I asked for permission to enter the reception area, only. We were denied. I am not judging the whole museum.
