What a treat to be able to come back and visit the Hyde Collection. It is a small museum and located in the quaint town of Glens Falls. It had quite a few special gems including a Renoir, Rubens, Rembrandt, Seurat, el Greco and even a Picasso. The guided tour is a must so you can learn more about this private collection.Dont miss a visit to The Hyde if you are in the Adirondacks.

Great collection, currently showing prints, paintings and ceramics of Rockwell Kent through July 22nd. The building itself is beautiful; particularly the indoor courtyard. Admission was $12.There isnt food at the museum, but just continue into downtown for plenty of choices! Rock Hill Bakehouse Cafe and Spot coffee are both nice, relaxed locations.

An incredible experience. I found the Hyde House online and was stunned to learn a collection of fine arts was only 30 minutes away. Rembrandt, Degas, Ruben....some of the great master can be see without the long drive to NYC. Tour the mansion itself to see the Hydes private collection then check out the attached art museum for a rotating selection of artwork. This is a place worth several visit and I plan to return with my children.

A born and raised local. Made my first visit at 28 years today and, wow. What a gem. The entrance to the building is quite modern with large glass double doors. As you walk through youre greeted with a few quaint pieces of art. The Rembrandt in the back of the main building is a true wonder.

This is well-hidden gem of Upstate NY region. Owners of the paper mill (Finch Paper) behind the museum lived in this house and started the collection. In fact, you can see the mill still operating from the back of the museum! (winter 2019). A feel of the sulphite odor completes the experience, LOL. In any case, this is probably the best private collection of art between Sleepy Hollow (Rockefellers Kykuit) and Montreal. And while overall collection is pretty small compared to top museums in the world, it is amazing to have it here in our neck of the woods. And overall experience of seeing the paper mill and the wealth it created, all in one place, is worth a trip if you are in the area.

Review №38

Great experience with surprises around every corner, as far as fine art by some of the most recognized artists. The museum is small but that makes it manageable, I would say 1-1.5 hrs is all you need to cover most of the exhibit. We caught the Japanese woodblock print exhibit on loan from Suracuse U. The regular exhibit in the original house definitely brings memories of the Isabella Gardner Museum in Boston, at larger scale -- if you havent been, and liked what you saw at Hyde, absolutely do make a trip. They have a pay what you wish admission in December so we paid 1ticket worth for two. I would like to see the Museum expand to include a cafe, they do have room downstairs for group events that could probably be cornered off for a small coffee stand with pastries, thats all you need really. Great collection, courtesy of the paper mill old wealth. ;-)My only quip was that I am a little suspicious as to the authenticity of some of the works. The family actively sought after works by some masters, working through dealers in Manhattan. There was pressure and obvious incentive for dealers to find the right art within limited time frames. It is unknown but entirely possible that to please the sponsors and earn commission, dealers could overlook the origin of the work, or even order copies, and pass them off for authentic with all the necessary expert opinion (paid a hefty fee for their verdict). Overall, the world of fine art collecting seems rife with perverse incentive and potential for large scale fraud. Just something to consider as you ponder how such great works could end up in the hands of American social elite. Its not just this collection, its all collections worldwide. Food for thought...

It is one of my favorite museums. I wish theyd kept the kitchen intact though. Or maybe put the kitchen back. I also wish they had access to some of the other spaces that are closed off. But its not just the museum it was somebodys house you go in there and youre walking into a place that is is as it was when they lived there. I mean I think they might change some things around but its like going into somebodys house, somebody very wealthy who had beautiful taste in artwork and a lot of money to buy a lot of it. I wish theyd open the other bathrooms. And the garden area is beautiful and has a nice lovely sculpture of a family dancing. I thought they were going to make the garden bigger but I must have misunderstood. But it is a lovely little garden with a lovely fountain that the volunteers have worked very hard to make beautiful.
