Very neat place to visit if you enjoy historic buildings and a small history lesson. The building itself is absolutely gorgeous inside and out. We enjoyed all the small details of the house which included the different wooden carvings, fabric walls, the eleven fireplaces, and original paintings to name just a few. The attention to detail in this house can been seen in every single room.

Beautiful home. And incredible library collection of Harvard classics and turn of the century literature and science! So insightful to get a glimpse into the world 100 years past. Great place to take kids to show them a little history. And fun for adults too to see the many ways in which life actually hasn’t changed for families over time. The gift shop has many unique items so be sure to spend some time browsing that as well!Overall a good, unique choice for your Galveston visit which might otherwise be all beach.

I love this place. 20,000 sq ft of unbelievable detail, build from 1887 to 1892. I wonder whats on the very top level no one is allowed in. FYI there is one restroom for women and another for men next to the gift shop in the basement. Adult tickets $14 and youths $9. They lend you a recorder for your self tour but they are limited. If you dont get to get one they hand you an informational paper for the tour which is fine too. Overall, I had a great time.

Nice visit to a beautiful old home, however you are left wanting to see more since the third floor and many of the rooms of the first floor were off limits to visitors. My family was made to share handheld audio tour devices and this was not ideal since you had to stand very close together to hear your shared device over the devices of all the other visitors. Would have been nice to see photos of the house decorated and furnished in its full grandeur. There were a few photos shown on the device but the small size made it hard to see any details.

My sister and I took the tour of this place on a Saturday morning (Ill share just a few pics) and Mrs. Melissa was so knowledgable on the history of the Gresham family! It was amazing, beautiful, and most impressively well-preserved! Im so glad we got to see this! If you can, be sure to purchase tickets for the tour! Half of the ticket price goes towards work needing to be done for the roof of the palace. And if you do take the tour - dress comfortably as there is no A/C in the house. I respect that though, keeps the experience raw. Go check it out! Bring the family!

Absolutely utilise the self-guided audio tour. A little quirky as it’s aloud for everyone to hear, no headphones. But people move around and you can huddle in a corner. The woodwork is spectacular and the green “innovations” of keeping the house cool using Passivhaus techniques is ingenious. A must for architecture lovers.

Beautifully restored house with original furniture. For $12 you can tour on your own with a self guided audio tour. Everything is well labelled and for a Friday afternoon not too much foot traffic. You do have to park on the street there is no designated parking lot for the house but there is alot of parking around the house. Info on the audio devices was pretty good. The tour lasts about an hour.

Nice place to visit, but I didnt like the policy of having to share the audio guides. We were three and they gave one. As I asked for more they gave me another with no joy. As still I founded I needed the third one, as each of us wanted to go at our own pace she told me that she had already given to me an extra one and that I should be grateful to receive two instead of just one. I disagree, but I didnt discuss. However, 14$ per ticket and having to share the audio guide by group is not ok. The third floor was closed, but the place was cool.

If you want to see the whole building schedule the $30 tour on Saturdays. If you show up to take the regular tour it only covers the bottom 2 floors and cost $20. Didnt know this until after taking the $20 tour. There is no discount applied from seeing the the $20 tour applied to the $30 tour should you want to see more of the building. In other words we saw the $20 tour and if we had wanted to see the rest we would have to pay $30 more for that. Lovely building very interesting tour.

A beautiful home with an interesting link to American history. Walter Gresham was a private for the Confederacy during the American Civil War and as a result was present at the surrender and signing at Appomattox. (Mrs. Gresham was also a member of ‘The Daughters of the Confederacy.’) This home is an amazing example of what life was like at the intersection of the 19th & 20th centuries. Beautiful tile, woodwork & marble columns throughout the home. Mrs. Gresham was an artist and her work is present throughout the home from portraits, murals and the pattern on the family China. Treat yourself to a tour of this home, it’s an absolute gem- you’ll be glad you did.

The mansion is grand. We did the self guided tour that comes with a little audio guide that is numbered for each room in the mansion. The recorder gives a pretty detailed description of each room along with a bit of history. The tour took about 2 hours for us as we took our time in each room. The architecture is auh-mazing. From the marble columns, coffered ceilings, stained glass windows, carved mahogany woodwork and silk fabric covered walls. This home withstood the great hurricane of 1900. Rumor has it the Gresham’s and staff formed a human chain to reach out into the churning waters to rescue survivors. Hundreds of people were welcomed into their home seeking refuge from the deadliest storm in US history. A nice way to spend a couple of hours downtown.

This place is beautiful and the staff was very nice to my children (5 year old, 3 year old, and 9 month old). We did the basic audio tour where they give you a listening device and you go at your own pace. The audio part is not really doable with young children so we just had fun exploring and chose to listen to certain portions when we were curious about something. Our favorite parts were the chapel and the main stairwell. The gift shop is also nice.

Ive wanted to visit for ages and finally made it! A gorgeous old stately home in Galveston which is well worth a visit. The enormous gift shop in the basement is fun to browse and the room with the displays on wild weather - the focus is on the big storm of 1900 and on Hurricane Ike in 2008 - also very interesting. Maybe of most interest to me in homes like this is the old technology - if you can even call it that - old water heaters and the bell system and the dumb waiter and stuff like that. I wish there was more still extant. The handset tour guides are a good idea but with even a few people in the same general area its like walking around with a flock of ducks. It would be great if these could default to personal level, not speaker. Also, adult price is now $14 per person (as of end 2019). Some old info is out there on the web so be ready with updated info.

I was very disappointed yesterday because we took our daughter to visit before she ships out to the Navy. The young girl and the older lady behind the counter were rude and had very bad attitudes considering they were greeters to the palace.
