A truly magical place; the Official Opera House of Texas! Intimate and beautiful - I would love the opportunity to attend a production in this Romanesque Revival style building. It survived the 1900 hurricane that was so devastating to Galveston and Hurricane Ike, among others.Currently operates as a not-for-profit performing arts theatre with a seating capacity of 1,040.

This was my first time to visit this theater and I was pleasantly surprised. My son had requested that we take him to see the nutcracker. Im so glad we did, it was a beautifully performed ballet. It is a much more intimate setting than you get when seeing performances in Houston. Ive also seen three different shows in NYC, one of those being at Radio City Music Hall and I found this setting much more enjoyable. I really enjoyed seeing all the children in attendance, all the little girls with their hair done and fancy dresses on, the young men dressed up, it was all very nice.

Neat place to tour! Lots of history here. It is amazing that it was built in a year but sad that it suffered so much damage 5 years later with the Great Hurricane of 1900. It was beautifully restored. Have never been to a concert or show there but will definitely plan for it in the future.

The 1894 Grand Opera house is a “can’t miss” attraction. I cant imagine how cool Christmas and other events for children are in this incredible venue. Whatever you do, dont tell anyone about The Old Quarter, just across the street. It is probably the best acoustic venue I’ve ever been to. We’ll just keep it our secret.

Its the perfect size to see, hear, and enjoy every show. The variety of shows are wonderful and you cant beat the prices. Not to mention it is so much easier and fun to go to Galveston to see a show than to fight the traffic to go to Houston.

Designed by Frank Cox of New Orleans, this Romanesque revival structure served as an opera house, hotel, and restaurant when it opened for its first season in 1895. Converted to a movie theater in the 1920s, it was restored in the 1970s and 1980s to once again serve as a venue for the performing arts. Prominent features of the building include its stone and terra cotta trim. An original cupola over the main entrance was destroyed in the 1900 storm. The Galveston Opera House is the oldest opera house in Texas. The Texas legislature designated this opera house as the official opera house of the State of Texas.Recorded Texas Historic Landmark – 1990.

Very cute little opera house that is well maintained. They honestly have a lot of events going on, so theres always something to watch. Also since its so small all the seats have decent views, plus it has a pretty relaxed atmosphere. But will admit that some of the seats are a little close together, but shouldnt be a problem if youre okay with that.

My view of the whole experience here will differ at least slightly from most reviewers, as I am in the band that played here tonight. The venue is beautiful, nicely renovated, super-quaint and cozy, and the sound is good from the stage point-of-view. Oh, and the catered Mexican dinner was high-quality and really delicious! I had some minor issues with some things that dont need to be public.

Beautiful venue, some very nice ( one VERY rude) people helping, but if you come during a performance geared for children. ( one which lots of schools attend) and you are just a family attending be prepared to be moved at their whim to accommodate other groups. We ( 3 adults and one 4 year old) were moved several times ( by a very unkind employee) to various seats as school groups arrived and they decided they needed our seats .We were finally put in a spot only one of us could see the performers.Of course we let our 4 year old get the viewing spot.We had paid admission like everyone else, arrived an hour early but it didnt matter. Never again Grand Opera House!!!!Very disappointed!!!!

We came for my nieces dance recital and my son with special needs began to struggle after being there for an extended amount of time. All of the staff were so wonderful and understanding, but one woman in particular was so kind and really went out of her way to try and help us in any way she could. She sat down with us to try and help distract him, and even helped with my other child all without me ever asking for a thing. I wish I had gotten her name, but thank you to this establishment for employing such amazing people!

The Grand always has something going on! We have been twice in recent months, once for an open mic event which displayed the local talent of several Galveston natives; another time to see Stomp which was absolutely worth it. A true mixture of small and large acts alike speaks volumes about the staffs ability to pull in a variety of entertainment. The charm of this venue inside and out as a historic landmark only adds to your experience. I highly recommenced taking time to look at upcoming events and visit while you are in town!

Ab
Review №81

They put on plays, bands, and one time about ten years ago they had an Australian circus. The seats are small, but angled well so that anyone can see the stage unless theyre behind a tall guy. One of the few places where you can find tickets to see a real brass band with trumpets and saxophones anymore. During intermissions, they have a small concession area where you can get snacks and sodas. Theater is a dying artform, so the Opera house needs a lot of grant money and donations to stay open, in addition to the sales they make in tickets.

We went in to see Pink Martini, the experience just could not have been better, the place just captures the eclectic air of what an opera house should be, right down to the old folks ushering you in and around, and hounding cell phone users with their red lights, awesome acoustics in not too big of a place.

Cute historically restored theater. The seats are horribly tiny. Very cramped and very small. No leg room. My shoulders are wider than the actual seats on the main floor. My arms literally overlapped in to chairs on either side of me. It was like sitting in a childs seat at an elementary school. The restoration is beautiful but a complete fail on practical functionality and comfort. I will definitely not return.
