I love this hidden little gem. We took our little one (5 year old) on this hiking trip to High Knob and decided on the black/green trail. It was very steep, but we made it and the scenic view was totally worth it. Absolutely breathtaking. We lived the picnic table and even the wooden seesaw. So much fun and family friendly. We plan to go back to check out the other trails soon.

We love this park. Restrooms and cabins are well maintained and there is always wood available for the campfire. But easy access to outskirts of Frederick for restaurants etc when its rainy. Camp hosts are always welcoming and helpful. Fall foliage was perfect when we were there this week.

Very nice area but dont be confused and end up at the campgrounds, the park is about 1-2 miles further ahead from that entrance. The trails, after you park, is back towards that entrance, on the left where you will see a board with a map and posts with color directional arrows. I believe the RED trail is the shortest at 1.0 mile. Theres a nice lookout site as well along with benches and picnic tables scattered throughout the park.

Gambrill State Park is one of many state parks just outside of Frederick, Maryland. Within the park are a few parking lots. If the first one is full, they will mark it and direct you to the parking spots near the campsites. The park itself has a number of well-marked trails with varying lengths. The black trail was great for our family and our toddler walked most of the way. It also leads to a few overlooks looking out into the Maryland countryside. Parking does cost, but its on an honor system and cheap. $3 for Maryland residents and $5 for non-Maryland residents.

A good value state park. Inside the park is quiet with lots of bird song all day. A little close to some road traffic but you get 3-4 bar cell reception. I was able to remote work while camping! Not as much activities as other parks so the hosts and staff are happy to see you since this is not as busy as other parks.

Hiked on White Oak Trail. quick mile loop. Very peaceful and very green. Ferns were everywhere. We spotted five deer, 3 does and 2 fawns. Ground was very rocky in places. Wear sturdy soled shoes. The parking lot was full but we didnt see many people on the trail. We will be back to explore further.

This is my favorite park in the local area. Ive visited this park multiple times and always enjoy myself thoroughly. Signs and trail markers are super easy to follow, which is great for anyone anxious about getting lost. Ive done a longer hike up the mountain and personally didnt find it too strenuous, but enjoyably challenging. On another trip I brought my two-year-old and did the easiest trail. She wanted to be carried a couple of times, but mostly walked the trail herself. Trails can be a little rocky, so wear good shoes. This is a great park with plenty of trail options depending on your or your familys abilities, no matter what age your kids are. The views are also just spectacular. A great time to visit is October, the fall colors are some of the best in the area.

A favorite daily hike for my furry family member. She loves wandering through the woods as much as I do. Its very quiet and calming - and quite beautiful in the autumn when the forest is putting on golden colors or after a snow fall in the winter. Now that I think about it, I like this park all year round.

Trails are REALLY easy to follow. Any point where the trail diverges there are painted squares on the trees letting you know which path to take.Trails are ROCKY, make sure you are wearing good supportive shoes. Especially in the fall or after a rain.Views at the lookout are good but in late November there is not much color in nature.Parking was easy (again in Nov) and directions to the park are easy to follow. I plan on going back in the spring and checking out more of Frederick!

This was our first time hiking here. We hiked the Yellow Trail, which is a 7 mile trail, but not too difficult. Lots of shade so we didnt suffer too much in the heat and humidity. We parked at the Rock Run site, which had a nice pond for fishing, clean bathrooms, and lots of picnic tables and shade. We had to walk up to the Camping part of the road to catch the Red Trail that leads to the Yellow. Great time!

An absolutely amazing view of such a broad spectrum. Its one of the few uninhabited places that really helps gain some perspective on how small we truly are. You can see all of Frederick city and to the South from here. All the way out past Leesburg Virginia if you look to the right (marker is the poolesville incinerator plant along the Potomac river). To the South (straight ahead) is a view to Montgomery county down the I 270 corridor. To the east (left) is Carroll and Howard county. Great view especially when visibility is high. I love being up on the mountain.

Definitely one of my favorite Maryland State Parks. This is a large park full of narrow trails that allows bikes and dogs. It is not crowded because there is no place to swim. There are several parking lots. We park at the top of the mountain, but you can also park at the bottom. Beautiful views are right outside of the parking lots.

Review №91

Would probably be great for hiking, but I went for horseback riding and 1) trailer parking was unclear so I parked at High Knob, 2) the trails are not equestrian friendly; meaning its tight areas, lots of low bridges, Rocky terrain, didnt see any water sources (took the yellow loop). I will say for the equestrian looking for a challenging (at least it was for me) ride, this is it for you! Youre constantly on alert, steering your horse around down trees, stumps, large rocks, and tight areas (in between trees or trees and rocks, etc.). There are inclines and some downward slopes, I had to duck and dodge small shrubs, down/ leaning trees, and low branches, but its a nice length, about 7 miles. I took the outer yellow loop. There are pretty areas and not so great areas. I recommend horses to be shod or have boots and bring water for yourself and your horse! Not too many good running areas, so main speed is a walk.
