Such an amazing part of American history. This battlefield, Americas first national battlefield, is huge. Great roads for biking, many trails for hiking/walking. There is an almost overwhelming amount of information displayed on plaques throughout the property. The visitors center is also nice - and staffed with knowledgeable people. The small museum is neat, as well as the little movie you can see in the theater. Also housed in the visitor center is the Fuller Firearms Collection - a pretty neat collection of long guns that shows the evolution of them from the 1500s through 1920 or so.

Really nice! Really well taken care of. Nice trails, not much elevation change but nice changes between different landscapes, woods, fields, boggy swamp areas. Obviously lots of great historical markers and signage and monuments that are very interesting but I think the fields are my favorite, sprawling wide open Fields that are well maintained with great vistas.

Monumental amount of history here. Almost seems haunted. You suddenly understand the huge number of lives lost,... wasted; but you understand why and it makes you think. We intend to have many more visits as to try and take it all in.The museum was closed when we got there but we feel like we must see it.

It’s pretty. Yes, there are monuments. It’s historic. Yes, there are trees. Yes, there are deer. Tons of them. There’s also about 10,000 acres of nature, so when someone has picked their own little enclave and are vibing and enjoying said nature, try not parking your humongous family van/SUV right next to them. Social distance. Give some space. Also, there’s really no reason to ever completely stop your vehicle in the middle of the road and block traffic to look at the deer - you WILL get honked at. Enjoy!

This was a wonderful experience that we did on our own without a map or tour guide. We just followed the signs and got out when we wanted to explore. We saw wild deer in the fields and found a tree branch that had been destroyed by carpenter ants and had likely just fell! I think we may have picked up a tick there but I flicked it out the window. Awesome building we climbed to the top. Interesting to think that a war went on right where we were walking and that they died there. Sacred ground. Peaceful now and may we remember the sacrifice.

Make sure you stop into the museum area. The collection of rifles they had was amazing. There had to have been hundreds starting in the 16-1700s. We also downloaded the national parks service app and then did the driving tour with it. It was great to learn so much stuff that you would not have without the app/radio. You really got a feel to how monumentally huge the battle was with the app and it taking you to different locations. We only planned for about 2 hours for this location and I wish we had planned longer. In the future we will go back and check out some of the hiking and walking trails.

Starting in 1890, during the decade, the Congress of the United States authorized the establishment of the first four national military parks: Chickamauga and Chattanooga, Shiloh, Gettysburg and Vicksburg. The first and largest of these (5,300 acres or 2,145 ha) and the one upon which the establishment and development of most other national military and historical parks was based, was authorized in 1890 at Chickamauga, Georgia and Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was officially dedicated in September 1895.[5] It owes its existence chiefly to the efforts of Generals Henry V. Boynton and Ferdinand Van Derveer both veterans of the Union Army of the Cumberland, who saw the need for a federal park to preserve and commemorate these battlefields.[6] Another early proponent and driving force behind the parks creation was Ohio General Henry M. Cist, who led the Chickamauga Memorial Society in 1888. Another former Union officer, Charles H. Grosvenor, was chairman of the park commission from 1910 until his death in 1917. During the Parks early years, it was managed by the War Department and used for military study as well as a memorial. The National Park Service took over site management in 1933.[7]Use during the Spanish–American War
