We chose Delmar as the very first school for our daughter (she was barely two at the time). The entire staff was very welcoming and made this very important decision so easy for us. I LOVE the campus, everything from the classrooms to the playground. The weekly special classes are SO valuable; my daughters favorites were Yoga with Ms. Carol and Music Theater with Ms. Amanda. Her classroom teachers, Ms. Raquel and Ms. Madison were beyond special to her and therefore us. My daughter thrived the entire time she attended Delmar. We are so glad to have chosen this school for our child. Thank you, Delmar!

I was shocked when I took my daughter there. Teachers barely speak English. we were informed the kids will learn Spanish here but the main language is English. so this is not true. The temperature is too cold inside, their AC system is old. blowing exactly 69 degrees to their head. I was there for a month with my daughter, and I noticed they except sick kids. ( running nose, coughing) when I asked what is that, they said asthma... interesting, many of their kids has asthma. of course we got sick too. They don’t have kitchen no fridge or microwave, so get ready your little one will eat all day cold food. So basically no lunch. Lunch should be warm. They give them about 10 minutes to eat. They have some story time, dont tell me your 1,5 old baby will understand it! In this age they want to explore the world not just sit down and listen stories. Kids need story time but not in this age! I noticed kids don’t need different shoes inside, which is insane. I don’t even want to think about it what kinds of dirt and bacteria can be in n their shoes from public restroom, park, street...After this month I decided to not to go there anymore. I had to come back to do some paperwork. When my daughter recognized that place she started to shake and cry. That was more then enough feedback for us.

I waited a full 1.5 years before posting a review, I wanted to be sure I had an additional perspective (different school) before I posted a negative review. Our son was at Delmar Arts Academy for a little over a year. I can say one nice thing; he was safe the time he was there. Otherwise, this is a business first and an education center second. It is a top-heavy family run business, the headmistress and her sister run the education side of things and father and son the administration. Access to teachers and information is tightly controlled. One should ask themselves why all the obstacles to information. Parent teacher meetings are not between the parents and the teachers, they are with the headmistress and her sister, information is thoroughly controlled. As stated in other reviews, the employee turnover is extremely high; this is a clear indicator in my view of a poor work environment and as you know, this filters down to the employees taking care of the kids. There are almost zero native English-speaking educators, for cost reasons I am sure. Delmar follows a “high scope” curriculum but if the work environment is not very good and you are constantly changing teachers in a given class multiple times a year… There is little or no continuity with your child’s development, this coupled with the controlling headmistress makes for a very frustrating environment. We placed our son in a close by school that was slightly more expensive, what a major difference in the quality of teachers and the curriculum, major difference in the later! Parent-teacher communication is encouraged at the new school and directly with the teachers. The new school has parent chat groups and teachers that have been there many, many years (low turnover). The message here is, do your homework (pun intended)! While this “was” cheaper and we were “ok” with the school, there are better choices out there.

I love Delmar. My daughter attended for a year before we unfortunately had to move away. For us, Delmar has really set the standard for what we look for in a school. My daughter learned so much, and really loved her teachers and the staff. The communication and daily reports from the staff are very helpful and encourage parental participation. Pick up and drop off are easy and secure. We will really miss it there.

Im just reading the review bellow from Marianne and it is the same story - 2 teachers in 7 months. We have a great teacher that we simply love, Maria... I cant remember her last name, but she recently started and my daughter is so attached to her. I just really hope she is there for the long run as we believe she is the best teacher we had at this school.

I could not say enough about how amazing this school is. My son is in prek-4 here and we love it. He spent his first two pre-school years at another preschool and it is night and day on the quality of care, engagement, and learning that our son has received. Everything that is done here is intentional with the goal of always teaching the kids. Play is deliberate with the objective of growing and there is structure and routine that my child thrives on. We love the Ms. Johanna so much and it shows how much she loves her job. She is a natural and we are so lucky to have found this school for our son. Our younger daughter will be going here for preschool as well. Thanks Delmar family for everything!

This school appears to very charming and nurturing when you visit. We have had our son there for almost a year. Little by little, we have experienced issues that reveals a different picture. My sons teacher, who he was very attached to, quit with immediate action last week. After this event we have been informed that all together 12 teachers have resigned during this past school year.My son struggle with transitions. Thats why I chose Delmar as a school because they claim to be experts on emotional issues. But during the difficult period my son had, the director let me know repeatedly that his extensive crying and reluctance to change activities was causing a lot of extra work and stress for them. I told the school I had a feeling someone was being mean to him, because he was very unhappy about coming to school in the morning. The director kept telling me that it was all to do with the arrival of his new sibling. It has now been confirmed by some of the teachers that have left the school, that the director regularly pulled my son out of his classroom when he cried, and placed him in the baby class. Thats where he belonged when he cried like a baby. Some of his classmates have also experienced being moved to the baby class for various reasons, and they have told their parents at home.At pick up time the day after one of my meetings with them about my sons issues, the director walked him out and started talking to me about the next step in the potty training. My son was crying, he was very uncomfortable, which she seemed to ignore completely. She explained to me how she wanted me to start teaching him to wipe himself after a toilet visit. My son is three years old and totally dry, but he needs help with wiping still. As soon as we got home I checked his pants because he was so uncomfortable. The director had simply neglected to help him at all, his underpants were really badly stained. I could tell he felt humiliated, and he kept telling me mommy I need help. I called the director immediately and told her that this treatment was totally unacceptable. At first she pretended that she didnt understand was I was saying, and then she moved on to blaming my son, saying that he had told her that he was done. I kept insisting and she replied with referring to rules and regulations and how important it was that parents worked with the school accordingly. Refusing to admit a mistake or apologize, basically. Later I asked my sons teacher wether she had heard about the incident. She said yes, I asked her what did you hear? She said that your son unfortunately had some poop on his hands ...The director acts like she simply does not like children. She also has the habit of telling the parents about bad behavior while shes walking the kids out at pick up, and how this should be talked about at home. At the same time they are preaching about conscious discipline and offering courses to parents. There are many good things about conscious discipline. But regular humiliation is as far as I know, NOT a part of it.
