If you like lava flows, youll like this stop. Very short easy hike gives you great viewing access to lots of different lava formations and the relatively recent nature of the eruption makes it extra cool! The sunset crater itself isnt that interesting now that you cant hike up it anymore, but the surrounding area and informative signs around make it worth a stop. Also, wonderful veiw of the back of San Francisco peaks from here is an added bonus!

My kids didnt mind hiking when I told them we would be walking on old lava. Ive learned hikes near water or lava tend to be huge selling points for kids. Be sure to stop by the Welcome Center to get your kids a badge, they just need to answer some questions about the park. (Like what kind of volcano is Sunset Crater)

Its not every day you can say you were able to hike in a field of lava! All of the trails here are beautiful and very well marked, and there are a lot of informational signs describing what happened when the volcano erupted. Theres a good combination of easy, moderate, and difficult trails here, and theyre all laid out very well.

This is amazing place to visit. I awake thought the lava from volcano would settle add a solid plank which turns as solid rocks. heres you get to see and feel the same. The are nice camp grounds, as well. This is good for a days trip.

Anyone who is interested in native American culture has got to explore this place. Learn things you never knew. Park rangers are all knowledgeable and helpful. Really enjoyed traveling in this particular park.

Get ready for a long drive, but you should do it. There are a few trails around the volcano, I recommend aa and Bonita, but if you like a longer more challenging trail there are two others. After you walk on the lava trails head down the road to see some Pueblo. The ride is 35 miles long so far up and go for it!

Up close view of the area around the cinder cone, but no view of the actual crater, and for good reason. The very easy walking path has descriptive signs and posters showing the area, the before and after of trails to the top and shows clearly how conservation efforts have slowed the erosion of the crater. Very informative and beautiful.

The youngest extinct volcano in the US. The massive lava fields look like they were flowing yesterday. The adjacent mountains are still relatively nude of trees even after 1,000 years.

Stumbled across this park by accident on the way to Flagstaff and ended up taking some extra time to see the Native American ruins about 25 minutes from the campground. I highly recommend seeing it as a part of history that should not be forgotten. This area is full of Native American history and culture, lets not forget who was here long before the settlers came and took these lands. The Rangers are very knowledgeable and easy to get information from.

The visitor center is nice. For a complete experience, be prepared to drive a short distance to the sites in the park. The walk in the lava field is paved, and not strenuous. The cinder cone walk has a paved approach, but is longer and a bit more of an effort.

Nice visitor center with souvenirs and lots of information about the volcano. They also play a short film about it. I wish I knew driving here that one entrance fee applies to both Sunset Crater and Wupatki as theyre on one loop road. So depending which way youre coming from you can enter through either of those and just take the 35 mile loop road around.

One of a handful of national parks and monuments in the area, I stopped in to see what was so neat about sunset crater. I was immediately greeted by a ranger and park volunteer that delighted me with so many cool factoids about the park, volcanoes, cultural history and wildlife in the area. What a treat! They were so welcoming and knowledgeable. On top of that, I ALMOST LOST MY PRECIOUS NATIONAL PARK PASSPORT AND THE AMAZING RANGERS AT SUNSET CRATER TRACKED ME DOWN ON THE TRAIL TO RETURN IT. I had left it by the stamp pad area in the visitor center and they were so kind to find me to give it back. My experiences here and walking the trails will never be forgotten, you should take some time to visit! Thank you sunset crater volcano!

A small National Monument, Sunset Crater is worth a stop. The cultural history of the West is so entwined with the natural history that learning of both is something we should all try to be better at. We live where others have raised families and liver interesting lives with many of the same concerns we have, just manifesting themselves in a different time. One event which most surely became a part of their story is the eruption here. Not unlike the way I remember the eruption of My St Helens in 1980.

Science and history combined, this is an excellent place to learn about earthquake and volcanic activity. This visitor center includes exhibits that will appeal to children and adults alike and serves as a perfect introduction to a walk along the lava flow trail that is a couple of miles up the road. We spent about ninety minutes doing both the visitor center and the lava walk while on our way to Wupatki, where we spent about 2 more hours. It was an educational way to spend a day, while enjoying the diverse beauty and significant history of the Arizona landscape.

Nice Visitor Center highlighting all the fun people used to have when visiting the crater. Yes, you used to be able to drive up into the crater and spend the day now you can drive around the base and look up. You will see a very nice cinder cone volcano. Alongside of it is a narrow but deep lava field. Walkways throughoutHistory is interesting, Visitor Center is nice, but the whole thing wont take you more than an hour or two. They will get you for $20 unless you have a National Park pass. Not a great deal considering they dont let you go on the volcano.

The Rangers and volunteers that work here are awesome. They know about the volcano and surrounding area. I recommend getting the yearly pass it pays for itself in 3 visits to any national park, and then its free to any park or as explained to us any place the federal government pays for or subsidizes. Who knew there was a volcano in AZ.
