Amazing place to visit while near Flag! The ability to walk onto some of the villages as you enter the park is amazing. To imagine yourself there and then the reach Wupatki is incredible. The history and imagination run free! The blow hole baffles my mind and was by far my favorite part of it all! Make sure to come back at night as the park is a dark area and perfect to see the stars ️ Talk about the pitch black of night.

Very cool dive into the history of native Americans. Its very interesting to see everything in person and be able to walk right up and into some parts! Easy walk from multiple drive-up stopping points and lots of very informative and helpful signs along the way. Definitely recommend starting at the visitors venter and shelling out the $1 for the trail map/more info book.

I thought it was interesting that they told me that they dont get a lot of visitors which I dont understand because theyre part of the sunset national crater. If you pay to go see that you may as well go to see Wupatki. Take the loop road around and see the beautiful painted desert in the distance from a panoramic view which is stunning and take pictures because unless you drive all the way back the same way you wont see it again. The pueblos themselves a really neat to see especially given their history and are pretty well preserved. Over all I recommend taking a time to stop through and there are park rangers around if you have questions. Make sure you take water with you as there is very little shade or shelter from the sun.

Beautiful NM ️ Rangers were a little snotty about our 4th grade pass being digital and not printed and the orange cones everywhere took away from the landscape...but these did not take away for the experience. Walked the Wupatki trail (short but slight hills may be difficult for some). Get the information booklet from the visitors center for an informational inspiring walk.

IF you are near Flagstaff, this is a great and informative stop for 30 - 45 minutes. Impressive ruins of a once thriving native American community. The ruins near the visitor center (sadly, closed for COVID reasons, dont get me started) are really neat. But there are ruins in a box canyon north of the visitor center that are well worth the stop.

While this place does require a bit of a drive to get to it is really worth it as the drive itself is quite scenic. If you are in town, you go through the Sunset Crater national monument to get here and if you have never been there, that is also a fantastic place to stop. Once you get to the ruins it really makes you appreciate what it took to build this place since is in the middle of nowhere. What is amazing is how much of the structure is still standing. The walk around the ruins is quite short but the view in the background is just amazing. Truly a unique place you should visit if you have the time.

Very interesting to see. We went on a Sunday and it wasn’t busy! There’s a couple stops along the way to see different pueblos/monuments so it’s nice to look at more. The weather was also amazing. We got in for free because there was nobody at the entrance window when you first drive in (possibly due to COVID). This place is nice but it was not super amazing to where I would pay $20-$30 for it so I’m glad it was free. Additionally, the monuments are nice but the blowhole was actually the coolest part! Overall, the whole scenery felt like you’re in a western movie! Great vibes.

A wonderful experience in Flagstaff. Very family friendly and a world of history. Jeff Mullins Photography Adventures. Happy Hiking! Nestled between the Painted Desert and ponderosa highlands of northern Arizona, Wupatki is a landscape of legacies. Ancient pueblos dot red-rock outcroppings across miles of prairie. Where food and water seem impossible to find, people built pueblos, raised families, farmed, traded, and thrived. Today, if you linger and listen, earth and artifacts whisper their stories to us still.

Wupatki reminds me of Mesa Verde with the ruins. Secone time here. As other reviews state, you can explore the ruin closely and touch them basically. I think theyre doing some remodel for wheelchair paths as construction equipment was around. Id love to come back during the evening to see the stars. Not many people around on Sunday, basically just the two of us at every structure so hit up Wupakti if youd like some outdoor time without the crowds.

I have been to Wupatki twice this year. It is a pleasant drive from Flagstaff and the ruins are wonderful see. One of the special aspects of Wupatki is that visitors can get quite close to the ruins and really get a sense of what it took to build them. There are several in-depth information signs with pictures & drawings which give details of the ruins and what it was like to live there in the early days. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The bathrooms at the visitors center are open. If you want a close up view of early native American life Wupatki is a grand place to start.

Had a wonderful time learning about the pueblo and the people that lived there. Yes, most of it has been rebuild, but this really helps visualize what once was and to read the stories still told now about them and how possibly they came to be. A pleasant side trip when we were in Flagstaff. Half way from Flagstaff to the south rim of the Grand Cañon it was easy to find. The visitor center had good maps of several short walks to well preserved ruins (cant call them hikes, they were too short). The guide book for the main Pueblo site was well done, and the walkway is accessible most the way. The ball court and blow hole are unusual for Pueblo sites, and the multicultural history of this Pueblo makes it worth the short drive.

Saved this until last and so sad! Thirty minutes was NOT enough, but Sunset Crater was so cool we just didnt plan to take so long. If you are in the same boat, at least see the Kukoni Pueblo. I didnt know a whole lot about this site other than that it was close to Flagstaff, and that we could visit TWO National Monuments on the same road! I love a twofer, so we arrived at Wupatki after a long drive in from Vegas.First let me say that the problem with traveling in winter is the limited amount of daylight to get anything done. However, the bonus of traveling in winter is that the Golden Hour is pretty much stretched out to all afternoon. So it was that we pulled in to the entrance of Wupatki at 3:30 with the most beautiful winter light highlighting the grass and the landscape. It was utterly enchanting. Coming in from the north, our first stop was the Box Canyon Pueblos, and they glowed. The trail to see them all was easy and worthwhile, and I couldnt stop muttering oh wow, oh wow when I thought that these gorgeous ruins are over 1000 years old!Next stop, The Citadel. This one is VERY cool. Dont make the mistake, as I initially did, of thinking that the pueblo in front is what you are there to see. That is just the storehouse! The pueblo is on top of the hill, with a trail leading to the top, and it is SO COOL! Be careful with little kids, though...there is an unexpected drop off as you round the bend. From here, the road crests over a hill revealing the most incredible view of the desert. The transition from grasslands to desert vistas is really spectacular! Finally we made our way to the Visitor Center. There is a lot of great info here, but the real reason you make the stop is that the main attraction, the Wupatki Pueblo, is out back. WOW. What a sight! And the best part is that there is a trail so you can walk right among the ruins, unlike at other places. Kid had a great time exploring here, and she was very curious about the different details, like the blowhole and the gathering circle.Whether you love ancient history or have imaginative kids or you just enjoy beautiful landscapes, this is definitely a great place to visit!JUNIOR RANGERS: The book here is small and required some exploration of the Visitor Center and the pueblo. It can be finished in less than an hour, though you can start it here and finish it at Sunset Crater if you need to (and vice versa); the rangers have the books and pins for both sites. Badge is a basic pin, and a Flagstaff Area Jr. Ranger patch is available for sale at any of the three sites.

This is a great way to spend a few hours north of Flagstaff learning about the Native Americans who called this part of the Southwest home. Take the time to drive the full 34 mile loop from Sunset Crater to the main Wupatki Visitor Center and ruins. There are several ruins to visit along the drive and many that we can only look at. The Visitors Center is full of great information and also gives us the Hopi history. Look to the east and see the Painted Desert in the distance and to the west, the San Francisco Peaks. The path around the main ruins is dirt and has several inclines, Im not sure a wheelchair could make it unless there were people to help? Stop for a moment and listen to the desert sounds and look at how they wrapped the pueblo around the rock formation. If this was a main trade center then think of how busy it must of been. Definitely stop at the wind tunnel next to the ball court. The bathrooms are on the outside on the front of the building and are always clean. This is high desert so take water, a hat, sunscreen and good shoes and most of all, enjoy!

The amazing thing here, for us, was the umpteen square miles of asphalt-like volcanic ash blanketing the entire ground around the southern end of this park with only very sparse vegitation popping-up through it, even after 10s of thousands of years. And the remnants of long-gone peoples, whom preceded all modern day Americans except possibly the Native Americans very long lineage. We too, are only passing through. Tread lightly! And have some respectful responsibility for this very unique land it was your pleasure to see in your short lifetime.

Great scenic route for the family. We started at the north side of the loop. So the pueblos and high desert views were spot on. We stopped at the first pueblo and loved it. We did bring our dog on his leash, even though it says no pets. We stayed on trail with him and the fellow visitors didnt seem to mind. We always clean up after him. He is family. As you cruise along the route the terrain changes from desert to mountain, or volcano technically. Sunset crater is there peaking out. The scene is amazing. Good show. Good car ride. Visited - March 2018The ruin preservation at Wupatki National Monument is impressive. I really enjoyed being able to talk about the ruins and explore the culture of the ancient Pueblo Indians who lived here. To imagine life at the time and what it took to support a village of this size was amazing. We took time to visit more than just the ruin site where the visitor center is located and would recommend it to anyone. The ruins are easily accessible and Wupatki National Monument can be combined with Sunset Crater Volcano for a great one-day loop trip out of Flagstaff. The visitor center was great and had a wonderful variety of books for the readers out there. Lots of interesting things for kids as well. The kids doing the Junior Ranger Program seemed to be having a fun time learning as well.

Was here a few weeks ago, after being in the Sedona/Flagstaff area. There’s some driving between each of the sites, but each ruin site has a parking area and I highly recommend to park and walk. When it’s hot, carry water with you, it can get really warm out there. The paths are very easy walking and several of them are paved. You can walk right up to the remaining walls (don’t walk on/touch them) and you can imagine what the structure used to look like thousands of years ago. In some of the ruins, you can actually walk into a couple remaining rooms. The visitor center is in between Sunrise Crater National Monument and highway 89.

Wupatki Natl. Monument covers over 35,000 acres, the largest Pueblo found on the Colorado Plateau. The structures were once home to the Hopi, Zuni and other tribes from the early 1100s to the mid 1200s. These ancient people were mostly hunter-gatherers. North of Flagstaff, you can drive the loop road which returns to Hwy. 89. The loop also includes Sunset Crater.
