I visited Granite Tors trail, which is located in the Chena River recreation area. It was beautiful. The trails were pretty well maintained, there were a few spots where it gets a little overgrown, but not really that bad at all. There is a boggy area near the point to head back to the start that is a little difficult to traverse, but not so bad it is not enjoyable. It is also not that long of a distance on the boggy area, maybe a quarter mile max. Along the ridgeline it does get a little confusing on which way to go, because there is trail and then all of a sudden there is nothing but huge rocks and trees all around. If you look for the rock markers that are built up, you will see the way to staying on track. There are some cairns there that mark the way and a few small bright hiking signs, but they are hard to spot sometimes, the rock piles are the best navigation tools on the ridge in my opinion. If you want a challenge be sure to get on the Granite Tors trail, if you are a trail runner, you could potentially run most of it. If you are just up for a challenging hike try this, you wont be disappointed.
Rented the Chena River Cabin. It is nice with a good amount of room. The area is beautiful and it is a nice get away from town. You have to book well in advance because the cabins are popular, and booked fast. Bring foam or air mattresses if you want padding for the beds. This cabin seemed to be really well maintained.
Cool shops and history, although much was closed during the week due to Covid-19. The people i did talk to were friendly. Will definitely go back
A large expanse of lakes rivers and trails that are breathtakingly beautiful and only about 30 minutes from Fairbanks! All kinds of outdoor opportunities from ATV riding 2 fishing and hunting along with several stocked ponds. Hopefully the tourists dont find out about this area, haha. There are also numerous camping sites maintained by Alaska state parks that are remote and beautiful.
First time hiking Mastodon Trail. Really nice hike, but bring waterproof boots if you are going all the way to the cabin!
After moving to Eielson Feb of 2017 I can honestly say the rec area has been one of my favorite places to ride ATVs. Well groomed trails with amazing views, nice cabins, and very well marked trails. Ive ridden at many places, and Im still amazed at how well the trails placed, and kept. Plenty of adventure to be had, while not having to worry about getting lost. A++++
My wife and I love the motorized trail system we use them all we can as many times that we can.weve been using them since the early 90s and love how they keep them up.park ranger Happ is really pleasant to talk to and does a great job for the park.
Such a beautiful place to spend the night with the Chena lulling us to sleep.
Great day trip from Fairbanks. The trails are pretty heavily hiked so it doesnt feel like Alaska, more like a state park near Denver. Nevertheless, there are some good views that dont require the level of commitment that real Alaska requires.
A fantastic hiking destination
A great place to camp and close to the river for an awesome Alaska experience. Excellent boat landing too if you want to float to Pikes Landing for a meal.
Terrific views and places to camp and explore. Bring your binoculars wildlife is everywhere. You can soak in the all natural hot springs in Chena.
Fabulous hot springs!
Beautiful park, amazing scenery. Restroom facilities are not upkept well.
Beautiful. Great place to bring the family or just relax for a day.
The hot springs were a little stinky but loved the water. We also rode day bikes, checked out the animals and more. Very cool place to visit.
Another area for consideration. Of where to build my off grid resort retreat. Join me on my journey go fund me.
My favorite place for fishing and easy camping trips with the family.
Great views. Boardwalk needs some more work, but that may be due to money/funding. The trails are pretty good. If you want to do the long loop, plan 5-6 hrs. Do kind of wish there were more switchbacks, intead of a lot of straight trails going up/down.
Always great, rain or shine
Nice, super scenery and natural setting.
Incredible place. Worth the trip.
Who lives in alaska?
Amazing place! Didnt want to leave!
Great natural area of Alaska.
Great place to spend a couple nights when visiting Fairbanks. Park is wooded and looks as if you are in the country. The noise level provides a different opinion. Probably not as much an issue for RVs but is for tent camping. Loud traffic all night on the two major streets next to park and sometime it is on the airport flight path. Only other minor concern is this park at times have issues with homeless.
Well kept facilities, great campsites and fishing
Pull off anywhere and hang out. We had a picnic with the kids, fished a little, and skipped rocks. Great day outdoors.
Great times for fishing just follow the rangers rules or they can get pretty testy !! Lol
9-2-16, We mostly drove through the park but hiked the Tors and Angel Rock area. Lots of water and alpine zones. The rocks on the Tors are mystical looking and well worth the 15 mile round trip.
Great snow machining and fishing
Wast wilderness, went there in end of march. All the trails were still closed with snow and the river was just starting to thaw. Nice to drive and great to watch.
Nice area lots of camp possibility
A great place to go for a day or two. There are lots of campsites and trails to hike. The nature is beautiful and its just a great place to be
