Nice trails. Not for the inexperienced or ill prepared. Some parts of the trail are covered in bigger rocks. Signing for the trails is inconsistent.

Tom Mays is a great place to bring family, pets, and have a great time outdoors. The geologic history is a wonderful perk of exploring the park.

This is a very good part of the state park. Many trails start here and there are some very good views of the surrounding mountains. I have hiked several of the trails starting here.

Great place to take the family. Hiking is excellent for all levels of experience. Be sure to bring lots of water. Picnic tables available.

Before you even enter the park, several piles of grotesque & random animal bones greet you at the sign, as to warn you that this park is not well maintained! We hiked the Aztec Cave trail, which was about 1.3 miles round trip, but dangerously steep & slippery at some points due to broken stairs & large rocks in the trail. The view is beautiful, but be careful taking small children or pets.

Great weather, this March. Beautiful sites. Grill. Few bugs. Plenty of open sites.

Great place for trail running

Franklin Mountains State Park is open for year-round recreation. Development of the park is limited and much of the land is far from paved access roads and parking areas. Two hiking trails can be accessed from Woodrow Bean Transmountain Drive. Plans for a network of 100 miles (160 km) of hiking trails are under consideration.[2] Rock climbing is permitted in the park and well established climbing areas are located in McKelligon Canyon The park headquarters is also located in McKelligon Canyon. Five camping areas are found in the Tom Mays Unit of the park with picnic facilities.[2]The Wyler Aerial Tramway is an aerial tramway operated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and is located in the Franklin Mountains State Park. The tram is closed to public as of Sept. 2018. The tramway complex covers 196 acres (0.79 km2) on the east side of the Franklin Mountains. The gondolas travel along two 2600 foot 1 3/8 diameter steel cables to Ranger Peak, 5,632 feet (1,717 m) above sea level. The trip takes about four minutes and lifts riders up 940 vertical feet above the boarding area.

Great desert park with lots of hiking and biking trails. Take lots of water. Picnic areas are a little outdated with limited facilities. There is an overnight camping area.

Nice alternative route instead of dealing with El Paso traffic. beautiful scenery.

Ive always loved Tom Mays park, since I was a Kid & my Dad used to take me hiking there. Then I took my Daughters & now I take my Granddaughters.

What a gem! Tons of trails to get out and explore, and so close to the city. Camping is good here too, just bring your own water.

They need better signs for where to meet up for ranger guided events.

My much better half and I have established a routine of welcoming every New Year’s Day with a hike. Despite my “ageing out” and formerly strong taunt muscles are now thin, saggy & baggy; additionally, I don’t walk so well anymore. Thankfully, I have a new hiking stick, a stout length of bamboo, wry light and very strong, which was essential for me to maintain my balance as well as carefully selecting everyplace I put my feet.Anyway, Texas Parks & Wildlife have organized hikes at many of its parks around the state on the first day of every New Year. I had read about this hike in Franklin Mountains State Park; we were both excited about exploring another aspect of our “Hidden Gem of the World, Crossroads of North America, anchored by El Paso, Cd. Juarez & Las Cruces!” [which is also better explored from a bicycle seat whilst pedaling the “International Ft. Hancock - Las Cruces I-10 Bicycle Bypass”, and if you have a valid passport, visit MAGNIFICENT MEXICO!]Unfortunately, there are several distinct access points to this wonderful mountain park, and I had missed the instruction that the (10:00) meet-up at the trailhead was on the WESTSIDE, at the Tom Mays unit. Sooooo, we were late, but, just as we’ll because I am quite slow, especially as I pick my way along the gravel & rock path. We had ascended as far as the jump off point for paragliding/hang gliders when the surface wind was increasing, along with the wind chill. Another indicator was my bamboo pole—the wind whipping across the open end emitted a bass flute-like sound. Time to turn around!A highlight was meeting & having an extended conversation with a retired radiologist, originally from YorkshireUK. What made it of particular interest to me s man had had both knees and a hip replaced—something that my aging body is rarely wanting, but maybe inevitable in a few years....!This state park is the largest in-city mountain expanse in the USA, and well-worth enjoying, whether hiking, (mountain)biking, camping or just visiting. I highly recommend it and give it my hearty “Wheel of Approval!”

Great park....tennis and basketball court. Big trees, lots of parking space. Playground and soccer fields.

It is a great site. The view is excellent and beautiful natural. In the night, it is wonderful.

Tom mays parks is the best hiking trails and be careful around mountain lions and snakes

The park rangers dont know what times they are supposed to open and close the gates. According to their website, they close at 8pm on weekends from April to September, but I guess thats not their problem.
