Knowledgeable staff and really cool history with the building itself and the surrounding area. Definitely worth a stop if your a history buff like myself.
Built in the late 1700s, what is currently The Old State House Museum in Dover was once the Capitol Building. This grand building is open to visitors who wish to tour the beautiful rooms and admire the Middle Georgian architecture. The building is now on the National List of Historic Places and displays many artifacts and documents.
Note: Covid restrictions made my visit less enjoyable than it otherwise could have been. I was only able to go into the lower floor to see the courtroom. The upper floors (legislature rooms) were off-limits. They played a short video and gave a short description of the courtroom and basic Dover history. It was over in about 15 minutes. But hey, at least it was free.
Stopped in for a tour and was so impressed by the young woman who gave us a tour! The building itself is magnificent, but the enthusiasm and knowledgeability of the tour guide made the experience so incredible. Tours are offered on demand as soon as you walk in, so no need to schedule a time or come in on the hour (however, the walking tour, which is separate from the state house tour, leaves on the hour). Overall I had a great time here and would recommend it to anyone! (No public restrooms in the building, but there is one available nearby at the art museum. Plenty is parking available both in front of the state house itself and on the side streets nearby.)
Closed but very worth the trip
This is a great place to learn about history in a setting that reflects the setting our forefathers lived in. The staff is very interested in helping you understand the events that took place in this building and how the building has changed over time.
The volunteer tour guides were kind and knowledgeable. Having visited Independence Hall in Philadelphia, this really brought the story of our countrys founding together. Its amazing to stand in the place(s) where history lives! The people and families of Dover fought to have The Old State House preserved. We are fortunate for the forward-thinking people of the past. This is one of three sites in Dover (and Dover is one of seven areas) that are part of the First State National Historical Park.
Nice place and great ambience.
Nice place to visit, quite small though. Free entry.
Had a tour from the most knowledgeable and interesting man I have ever meet.
This is a tremendously interesting historical building. The fantastic tour guides were full of knowledge and resources. We really came away with a fantastic appreciation for the historical value that the old state house is in its current state as a museum. From the realistic displays to the replica setup. It was a fabulous experience for the entire group of people that we were traveling with.
Nice place to visit
The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and really enhanced my experience. In the summer, go in the morning - no one is there!
Great historical site. Make sure you check out the giant painting of George Washington on the second floor.. really cool.
I love historical sites and we have so many here in Delaware.
Wonderful 30 minute tour at a historic landmark in the heart of Dover. Friendly tour guide showed us both floors, explained displays, and shared Delaware history. No cost, and a must for our of town visitors.
Wonderful historic structure of the American 18th century to visit
This Labor Day weekend was our first time ever going to the tour and our tour guide was fantastic she was very knowledgeable and very interactive with everybody great experience thank you
It was wonderful! The guides give such a wonderful presentation. They make the Dover historical folks come alive.
The tour guide was wonderful. So knowledgeable and the info he shared was very interesting
Great place. Lots of history all around this building. Volunteers are always eager to share information. Love this place. L9ve the 4th of July reading of the declaration of independence
Wonderful example of colonial history!
This is a beautiful building. The staff were very friendly and gave a great tour.
Good place to visit for historic moments
Very nice and very well maintained.
I visited the Old State House this past weekend, and it is worth a stop if you are in town sightseeing. It is one of the few places that is open on Sundays, and the historical interpretation was very well done. The docent gave a very thorough history of Delaware from colonial times through Delawares secession from Pennsylvania and statehood, through the ratification of the Constitution (Delaware was the first state to ratify). The first floor of the Old State House is the old colonial court. There is a beautiful set of winding staircases on both sides of the building that take you up to the second floor, where the upper and lower legislative assemblies met. On this level, there is a unique portrait of Washington that is worth seeing.
A beautifully restored building which used to be the seat of government in Delaware a few decades ago, as well as a court house much earlier in history. The tour guides have so much to tell you there is much more to see around the town after seeing this building. There is plenty of parking in the streets around the building.
Cool to walk around great for Pokemon go
Good experience friendly guides
Well trained and informative docents, nicely restored with several cases for rotating displays of local artifacts from the 18th century to modern.Combine with a tour of the old “green”, Christ Church and Graveyard, and nearby local eateries, and you have the perfect quiet half-day trip to Colonial America without the kitsch.
Heard a great concert by Steffi and Tim, local musical performers. Check out the monthly concerts.
Beautiful. Tour guide were amazing
This is a rare 18th century state house, well maintained and located on historic Dover Green. Very knowledgeable staff and excellent programs. Excellent Saturday series for African American history month.
Great place to visit if youre into history and museums. Staff are very informative about the historical narrative of this monument.
The First People of the First State Celerbrated Heitage Day. We had a great time Celerbrating the spirit of mother earth. We the Lenape Indian Tribe of Delaware want to thank everyone for their help. Thank you great spirit for a great day. Aho and Wanishi
Another great living history site housed in the original state legislature and court house with informative guides in authentic period garb. Lovely revolutionary period portraiture, on the walls, including Delawares life size portrait of George Washington.
Luciana was very informative and friendly. Enjoyed speaking with her!
Great small museum. Knowledgeable and helpful docents make this a place worth stopping at.
The house itself is tiny, but the guide was very friendly and informative. Its free tour lasts about 15-20min.
Nice tour
Lots of history here! You can tour the building yourself, or tag along with a very talkative tour guide who might talk a bit too much and never let you see anything. But youll learn a lot at least!
Great place to visit
We had a great tour on Governor John Carneys Inauguration Day.
Free tour around the state grounds, extremely informative with both general history and interesting antidotes.
Was good and clean
Nice to see history that might be forgotten if not for this wonderful state house.
