If you want to get a sense of the African-American experience in Denver as well as the wild west, this museum is a must-see. Do not underestimate its size, as it contains so many important national and local historical gems. Including a video about an all-black settlement in Colorado that is now a ghost town. As for the odd operating hours, that is mainly because it is volunteer run, but if you’re able to work it, into your schedule you will not regret it.

Had an amazing time. There are many historical pieces and pictures on display coupled with information for you to read and look at. The tour guides at this museum were kind and helpful to me. Get ready to spend at least 1.5-2 hours there. There are also items for sale such as dvds about the western American history, books, shirts. I recommend visiting this museum. It was time well spent. I will be back again to visit in the future.

This place is a gem unveiling the “hidden figures” of the American West. Learn more about those who had a major impact on the gold rush, cattle ranching, rodeos, medicine, wartime, and innovation but don’t get the recognition they deserve. The staff is very knowledgable and engaging. Highly recommend!

What an amazing collection of history that no one living in this area should miss. It is filled with little known facts and history of black people who changed the world. Don’t miss the video downstairs. The curators are knowledgeable, professional and have first hand experiences to share. This is a rare opportunity to learn what isn’t taught in school.

Good information about African American history in Colorado and the volunteer docent was super knowledgeable. This cultural jewel is underfunded, needs at least 1 paid staffer and more support from the city of Colorado.

Quick tour but immensely educational, Im glad I made time to visit this historical site on my trip to Denver. Left feeling inspired, impressed at how much effort goes into establishing and maintaining a place like this, and with new names to research and pay further respect to. Essential visiting for anyone who enjoys learning about the old wild west and quasi-mythological landscape of frontier times.

I helped the curator before it was founded. Paul Stewart was a fascinating man with the exhuberance of a 10-year-old about Black people in the old West. Now Black American West is a monument of our history, cram-full of fascinating objects with endless stories. From its beginnings focusing on Black cowboys, miners, Buffalo Soldiers, and rodeo riders, it now showcases Black people of any profession, who figure in Western history. It is also ideal for small gatherings, lectures, filmings, even a bit of craftmaking for children.Be careful, you may very well find something about your own family here.Group tours are available by appointment at other times.

This was a wonderful museum of the rich history of the often ignored and forgotten contributions that Black Americans have made Colorado what it is today. The Black Cowboys of our history should be honored as much as anyone else who made this state, my home and of whom I am a native of and they should be acknowledged throughout our history. I am so appreciative of this museum carrying on this knowledge for everyone to learn about.

Modest museum chock full of artifacts, photos and information about Black frontiers people, cowpeople, and the Buffalo soldiers. They have a section dedicated to modern day Black cowboys. And the tour guide is like a griot, very knowledgeable about Black history overall. When you think of Colorado you don’t initially think of Black people. But we were here, and played a vital role in settling the West. I didn’t know. And now that I do, I feel so proud!

WHO KNEW?????The history of African Americans in the west, is a hidden treasure waiting to discovered. Our guide, Mrs. Gentry is a descendant of many of the individuals featured in the museum. Listening to her passionate stories of those who built cities and contributed heavily to Colorado, was like sitting at the foot an ancient African griot.Get your wife, get your parents, and most importantly get your children, and head to this museum, so they can witness and build on a glorious past, to make an even better future!
