Equipment are out of date, and the gym hours suck. On Saturdays and Sundays, I enjoy going to the gym early, however it opens at 1 pm on Sunday - are you serious?! This disrupts my workout flow for the entire week. Please revise the hours, the gym opens early and closes late. UIC opens at 6 am and closes at 11 pm nearly everyday.

The Student Rec Center is an amazing facility. It has every sort of machine you could possibly ask for, as well as many free weights. It does occasionally get busy, but it never runs out of equipment to use. There are towels and spray bottles at every machine to clean up as well. There are also several courts which can be used for basketball, volleyball, and ultimate frisbee. Besides this, there are a couple courts that can be used for tennis, table tennis, and various other activities. If you bring your own equipment, you dont have to pay to rent anything, but if you, you will have to rent the balls for the sport for a very negligible price. Racquets and the like are free however. I highly recommend this facility, a great way to stay in shape and have fun on campus!

The entire place is pretty shabby. Over half of the lockers in the locker room are out of order. There are a pretty good selection of free weights though.

N.I.U does not properly maintain the rec center facility.1. Majority of the lockers in the mens locker room are damaged.2. Sauna does not work majority of the time and has a very bad odor (possibly mold).3. Many of the weight rooms in the facility have a very bad odor and lack of circulation which makes it very hard to breath.4. Many of the 45 pound plates are damage and look like they have been chewed on.5. Many machines are outdated, broken and not fixed.6. Gym opens very late on the weekends

Overall it has the equipment you need. Cardio, free weights, weight machines, racks, etc. However a lot of the equipment is dated and the facility is pretty dirty. Most of the lockers are broken and the sauna tends to break quite frequently. The hours are also a problem for a lot of students. Not the best gym, but since it’s free it is worth dealing with.

Great for being free with your student onecard. Love the cardio room and sauna, when it’s working. Many machines are out of order and are slow to be fixed but what is available is perfect for any student’s work out needs. My biggest issue is that 90% of the lockers are out of order and it’s been that way for the entire 3 years I’ve gone to NIU.

Nice place to workout but have weird hours especially on the weekends...gets crowded at certain times but if you avoid 3-6 youre fine. At this point less than a quarter of the lockers actually work. They still havent fixed them and its so annoying.

The weight rooms are spread out which was confusing. This was pretty packed due to the time of 8pm at night. The lockers in the locker tend to be out of order or just rust and bent. Everything was clean and generally put away but overall it is a cheap looking gym. In addition to the front desk people being not friendly/welcoming and on their phone. This gym is not awful but not amazing by any means.

Awesome place to workout in. There are 2 weight rooms. Lots of cardio equipment. TRX room. And rooms for other sports. It has SO many choices for many differnt workouts. Best times to visit during morning time and 3 hours before closing, less people at those times.RECOMMENDATION: clean the equipment before and after using them. There are people who dont clean after using weights and machines.

Men’s locker room has majority of lockers broken... Been like this for the 3 semesters that I have been here. Always an excuse for why they don’t do their job. Just get it done.

The facilities are nice and there is a wide range of equipment to choose from. It can be difficult getting on a machine, though, due to the large number of attendants.

Weight room is always EXTREMELY overcrowded and half the lockers dont work. Youd think 25k students paying 20k a year could get a decent weight room.
