A local treasure. The Ranger on staff (wish I had gotten his name!) was fantastic to talk to about the Dunbar family. The movie and the tour were great. I highly recommend spending time at the house. Do check out the art and writing the local schools have produced. The Dunbar House is a gem.

Superbly renovated the Dunbar Hiuse is a window to the past. Preserving much of Mr. Dunbars possessions; his Bible! Typewriter, and books paint an insightful picture of the life of a remarkable man. This is a must see for visitors to Dayton, Ohio.

The Paul Laurence Dunbar house is so much history in there you can feel it in the atmosphere when you walk in. Love that this place is free and open to the community and its willing to give tours of the Paul Lawrence Dunbar house. I brought a group of second through sixth graders to the Paul Laurence Dunbar house and they have such an amazing time. Also they learned so much about Paul Laurence

Very well deserved historical home! I knew a little bit about Mr Dunbar prior to my visit. Thanks to the great visitors center and the tour of the house, I have completely new appreciation of the man.Am amazing young man who died way too soon! We can only guess how much more he would have contributed if he lived to be an old man.The house is very close to the Dayton Aviation Trail visitors center and Wright Brothers bicycle shop. So definitely worth a visit. Even for a brief stop.

Paul Laurence Dunbar was a phenomenal influence for writing and poetry, especially focusing on the African American experiences and struggles. The park ranger I had, Kathleen, was incredible with facts and in depth knowledge of Paul as well as his home and family. The center is clean and accessible. I would go back with friends and family to show them a great part of Daytons rich history. Its too bad that Paul Laurence was such a terrible person though...an excellent writer but a horrible human to his wife. I dont think he deserves the amount of fame, but thats not sorry me to decide. His poetry is amazing and he is garbage.

Brought my kids here on spring break for a bit of local black history experience. Also my son attends Paul Laurence Dunbar Early College High School wanted him to be familiar with the namesake of his school. Believe it or not this is not a required field trip for any grade level at Paul Laurence Dunbar Early College High School.

The only reason I am giving this site 3 stars is because the house itself was not available to tour during our visit. The Ranger informed us there has to be 2 Rangers working in order to let guests view the actual Dunbar house and there normally arent 2 Rangers there if you havent scheduled a tour in advance. That being said, we thoroughly enjoyed the 18 minute documentary they shows us about the poets life and the museum which featured several of Mr. Dunbars personal effect.

Another historical site in the Dayton area (you can get the stamp at the Aviation historical site), this site is the historical home of Paul Lawrence Dunbar, an 19th-20th century poet. The free tour is extremely informative, providing a view of early 1900s life in Dayton through the eyes of a poet born to parents whod been enslaved in the American Civil. It was eye opening for me and I cant recommend it highly enough.

A nice visitor center attached to this home is a great place to kill some time before the next home tour, showing some of the books, clothing, and other memorabilia owned by Paul Laurence Dunbar. The home tour itself is quite memorable in that it is different than a lot of the typical home tours within the National Park Service as well as state-level historical societies. Most are for presidents, where one can tell that more often than not the homes were built to above-average means and standard of living. Here, there is some evidence that Dunbars rise to national acclaim helped furnish more for the den and some living areas, but the home retains its humble roots. It is very interesting and different as a home tour in that regard. It is incredible to think how this man managed to produce such a large volume of writing and get a good chunk of it critically acclaimed across the nation, all before the civil rights movement. It is an upbeat feeling to consider that a truly soulful expression can touch people in a way that helps people look past the authors skin color. Well done, National Park Service and Ohio History Connection.Oh, a tip, there is a public parking lot with plenty of space just to the east, but there should be enough street parking just in front of the home at any given time.

A quick, enjoyable add-on stop for any visitor to Dayton. There is a brief film to watch, and National Park Rangers provide a short, informative tour of the final home of the famous poet and friend of the Wright Brothers.

Paul Laurence Dunbar was a literary genius whose poetry, prose and dramatic works as well as his very existence as a black complexioned celebrity vindicates the humanity of a beseiged people. Dunbar was a national icon with schools named for him from his home in Dayton to Little Rock, Lexington, Baltimore, Ft. Myers, Ft. Worth and Washington, D.C. which is infact the first Black public high school in the USA - see the book, First Class: The Legacy of Dunbar, Americas First Black Public High Schoolby Alison Stewart, Melissa Harris-Perry (Foreword by Melissa Harris-Perry). It is an honor to walk into Dunbars home and see his possessions kept so well over the years by the Ohio Historical Society, Dayton History and the National Park service. It is my hope that the site will again employ a full time African American curator of the caliber of the retired LaVerne Sci.
