What can I say about this place, except for, bring the whole family!!! It was so much fun! We saw the tanks being run and was able to enjoy learning about the history of our soldiers. My son is a true war history buff. He was like a tour guide, he knew so much about everything we saw. He enhanced the trip so take your little history buff, you know that little kid who loves tanks and choppers... take him to this place and watch his face light up the entire time. I enjoyed watching my son enjoy everything! Thanks to the staff who were absolutely wonderful and welcoming!

This is possibly the best museum on the east coast. Hundreds of tanks, field guns, uniforms, and small arms. The manager is super helpful and informative. The place is so big that it would take a few trips to really soak in all the information. I am fascinated with weird and experiment vehicles and this place has plenty of them. It was worth the four hour drive.

Go here! Spend the whole day! Its awesome! We have been coming to ViR for 10+ years & never knew this existed until a Dinner with Racers podcast. On this soggy September day, we called it quits early at the track & decided to visit the AAF Tank Museum. So we stopped by with only ~1.5 hours left in the day thinking that would be plenty of time. Wow, were we ever wrong! This place is huge & then some. There is so much memorabilia & just plain cool stuff that I cant even begin to cover it all. There are rooms and rooms of displays of just uniforms & covers. There is a rifle room. There is a machine gun room. There is just everything and thats even before you get to the tanks. There are multiple hanger size buildings of tanks. Theres even a Panzer & from my understanding thats a really big deal.In the hour and a half we had, we only scratched the surface and saw a teeny tiny bit of what is available there. It really is worth a whole days visit and if youre a military history buff, its probably worth a couple of days.As someone in our group stated this is a Smithsonian level collection & I would have to agree with that assessment. =D

My nephew, a tank buff, and I, not so much, were completely blown away by the size and comprehensive nature of all kinds of tank and history exhibits. Of special note was an impromptu meeting in the exhibit rooms with the curator Bill Gasser. He is very accessible and entertaining. You will not forget him if he is available and you seek him out - the real genuine article! The climate control, or lack of it, made for a chilly visit in November - but the exhibit halls are so big it would probably cost a fortune to HVAC. We spent 3 hours visiting and could have added 3 more - and we will next year!

Very cool place for random small-town Virginia.I took my dad here for Tank Days in 2014 or 15 for an early Fathers day present. He was a M-48 crewman in Vietnam and he enjoyed the **** out of our trip here. He even met someone that served in the same division. The staff and volunteers put on a really great show. I say show because it was more than a demo, I mean they torched a bunch of stuff with flame throwers and crushed a car with a tank. That display of power and destructive ability was awesome. They have a very nice collection that seemed to be on the uptick with a great volunteer staff. Any tank or military history enthusiast would have a great time.I did feel a little uncomfortable in that it felt as much like a political rally. Situational hazard of being at a military museum, I suppose.

The AAF TANK MUSEUM has been bringing tank and cavalry history alive for all generations to learn from and explore for the past 27 years. In 1981 the American Armoured Foundation, Inc., Tank and Ordnance War Memorial Museum officially opened its doors in a 10,000-square-foot facility on one acre of property in Mattituck, NY. With only a modest collection of artifacts and two very determined volunteer directors, the AAF Tank Museum grew and prospered. As the museum’s collection grew, the facility that housed the collection became inadequate; a search for a new home ensued. In 1999 a 330,000-square-foot shuttered mill building was generously donated to the museum and the next three years were spent closing the facility in New York, transporting the huge collection to Danville, VA, and starting the renovations and repairs to the new facility. Over 2,250 tons of military equipment was transported on flatbed tractor-trailers. In May 2003 the museum reopened its doors to the public and to date it is the largest combined collection of tank and cavalry artifacts found on display. The journey into military history begins by traveling back to the late 1800s with an exhibit of a U.S. Model 1895 Gatling Gun with limber complete with soldiers in authentic period uniforms, real horses pulling the gun and a taxidermied dog for the company mascot. Next, is a salute to “Army Elvis” and then the “Tank Toy” exhibit with 450 homemade and commercially built toy tanks and other armored vehicles. On the main level is the Rifle Room with over 65 rare, unique and common military rifles on exhibit from the 1800s to present, followed by a 5,200-square-foot “Headgear of the World” exhibit, where some unbelievable headgear worn by tank and cavalry soldiers over the ages is on display. Many of these helmets have magnificent long and colorful horsetails and plumes representing the bygone Victorian era. A Korean War snow scene depicts two soldiers manning a recoilless rifle during an actual blowing snowstorm. The “International Hall of Tank and Cavalry Generals,” with over 220 tank and cavalry generals, brings visitors face to face with some very famous names in history. There are an amazing 117 tanks and artillery pieces to view, along with thousands upon thousands of weapons, pins, patches, presentation pieces, pillow cases, jewelry, dishware, glassware, maps, flags, guidons, artwork and much more. Other exhibits include “G.I. Joe — Carrier Pigeons at War,” dedicated to our feathered friends; “World War I period, U.S., Allied and Axis Tank Corps Artifacts,” and “Seek, Strike, Destroy — 1941 to 1946 period, U.S. Army Tank Destroyers at War,” that pays much overdue tribute to our little known tank destroyer forces of WWII. There is much more at the AAF Tank Museum for visitors to experience and new exhibits are open on a regular schedule.
