The experience was nice. An interesting walk around. The staff at the entrance was helpful. The facility was very clean. My children had an awesome experience. I just wish that the gift shop had a bigger variety of items to buy.

The exhibit is the perfect mix of art, literature and documents.As a descendant of a slave owned by the Mcconnell lineage, it was humbling to see the documents, letters and ledgers.Followed by an uplifting journey from reconstruction to renaissance.The artwork is very inspirational, cleansing the palate.The exhibit on Freeman Cemetery was exceptional. The video kiosks werent just narrations but actual interviews from local people who knew it as hallowed ground.I am very grateful for that opportunity and look forward to returning with my family.

My family & I visited over the weekend. It was nice to see some of our history! I did not give a 5 because it was extremely hot throughout the building. Its unfair we have to view our history like that. However Id like to do something about it! Ill def be in touch with the property!

It was a nice place and there were some cool artifacts. However, I expected more and wanted to see more. There was a lack of statues, artwork by non local artists, and history of African American culture, etc. It was nice but I think more is needed.

Loved our tour and our tour guide was very nice. I wish I remembered the young guys name. He took his time to explain each section and answer questions. We plan to go back and spend more time on the our own and just take it all in.

Nice place to host an event. Great collections of arts and exhibitions. Monday night politics by the Dallas Examiner. Phenomenal Zeta Phi Beta exhibit.

Even though I came on a day when some of the galleries were closed to prepare for new exhibits, there were many spaces to enjoy. The folk art exhibition featured many artists from Dallas, as well as furniture from North Carolinian furniture maker Thomas Day. The exhibition about African Americans in Dallas is a must see. I purchased a book in the shop and had a great conversation with the bookstore manager.

Absolutely enjoyed this place the staff and volunteers were so hospitable. Our film production company was invited out to premiere or movie Black Cowboy. It was a memorable experience. Well be back DallasFireproof TV Films

Great venue. The Kinsey exhibit was world class. Always enjoy this place. They need better marketing as a lot of people did not know about the great show. I will become a member soon and help spread the word.

A very historic place of African American history. From quilts to books to paintings to the stories about the history behind Juneteenth and cementary its a place to learn about African American culture and appreciate the continuous sacrifices and contributions of great African American public figures. I will definitely be back visiting this museum along with my family for a long time.

Visiting this musuem has been the highlight of my weekend. My fiancé surprised me with tickets yesterday and I must say I learned so much. The Kinsey family have dedicated their lives to travel and learning about our culture. As a result, they have constructed a museum filled with our history. All of my life Ive been taught what others wanted us to know about us, but visiting this musuem Ive learned bits and pieces of the TRUTH about us. It is imperative that we return with our kids this summer.

Beautiful and informative collection of Dallas civil rights antiquity!!!

Really beautiful and inspirational works of art, literature, sculptures, and busts. Almost every pathway leads to more art! Really enjoyed spending my time here digesting all the pieces and cant wait to come backUsually admission is free, but until March 2020 youll have to pay a $10 admission. Dont let that deter you though

Nice little museum with rich information.

I thought the works of art were beautiful. There was so much to see. However, there was not much history about the art or artifacts. The staff didnt know much. I would go as far as saying the staff were rude and didnt seem to care much for sharing any information with visitors. They seemed preoccupied with the phones and gossiping with each other.

What a wonderful experience! We attended a tribute to The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. The hospitality extended to us at the museum was outstanding. The host, Ruben Bilal was awesome. The ladies who sang the songs of Aretha Franklin were phenomenal vocalists. My daughter, Gabrielle Hill was one of the featured artists and she was greatful to be able to honor The Queen! Kudos to the African American Museum for taking the time to recognize Aretha Franklin and for show casing local talent to bring it to pass!

Very informative but I expected more artifacts and interactive media

Very nice quiet museum experience. Would not recommend for small children. Exhibits were amazing and it all had a nice flow.

We went for an Extravaganza event. Had a number of Christian rappers in an effort to bring hope back to the local communities. Was amazed at the local talent and had the privilege of looking at some of the heritage displayed at the museum. Had a great time and thankful being accepted with open arms.

Hubby and I came here for the first time and typically they stated that it is free to explore and you can make a donation but they had a featured collection, The Kinseys, on display, I believe until sometime in November.Im glad we were able to see the collection to see some of the collected pieces from the 1500s and learned a lot of history and art. I would recommend coming here and learning some history, it was great!

Yesterday we have an activity w a lot kids and its was a lot interesting stuffs to do. Clean, courtesy people an very organize. Thanks!

I love the events there but I wish that more people knew about it and support it better. Facebook is NOT the only way to advertise. Nonprofits can do radio spots for free. Also to get more Corporate sponsors to update the building or a new facility

The Museum has four exhibit galleries, one has a wonderful permanent exhibit on early Dallas history, with artifacts from Freedmans cemetery and early African American residents. The other galleries house traveling exhibits and this month local painter Riley Holloway has a great show.

I just went today for the Southwest Black Art show and I loved it! Its really stepped up on the exhibits and i adore the new changes. Definitely worth a new visit if like me you had not been in a while

Fascinating artwork in 3-4 different exhibits, rich culture and history surrounds in this museum. The curators were very friendly and informative about the museums history and what was to be found inside.

An amazing look into local black history

Went here for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. Love this place for all the culturally rich displays.

I try to go at least once a year and theres always something amazing to witness. Today i had the pleasure of attending the #ustoo Phenomenal Women Artists Talk which was phenomenal to say the least. The exhibit was so inspiring. We will definitely be going back.

The Southern University Bayou Bash was a wonderful event with food, music and fun!

The museum is huge. I only got through a very small portion of it; the music section. It was really neat to look at the videos, exhibits and read about old and new performers. There are 4 floors broken up by African American slavery, Civil Rights Movement, the museum store, sports and the top floor explores music. I would estimate it takes a solid 4-5 hours to see everything. The museum is open from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. every day of the year except for Christmas Day, December 25. Admissions is free although you will need to print out a ticket. An eye opening and educational experience.

We viewed The Bernard and Shirley Kinsey Collection at The African American Museum in Dallas. What an exquisite multimedia walk through history from the 1500s until now. Their collection contains a plethora of contributors to world culture such as painter Ava Cosey, sculptor, orator and abolitionist Frederick Douglass [actual pamphlet of his 1852 oration in Rochester, N.Y.] to a chromolithograph of US soldiers at Camp William Penn in 1863. I thank Mr.and Mrs. Kinsey, and their son, for sharing such rich memorabilia with the world.

I was here for a baby shower. It was beautiful and I will certainly come back.

I went to Dallas on my vacation. I visited the African American Museum. It was very interesting informative and had lots of pictures and artifacts. I would suggest anyone who goes to Dallas to visit the African American Museum.

Google says it’s open on Saturdays. Drove an hour to Dallas to see a sign that says closed due to coronavirus. I guess no one in management thinks it is necessary to update the museum’s hours online.

Awsome! Worth stopping in to tour. Not a lot of exhibits but I spent a good hour an 15mins up and downstairs. Friendly staff. No charge but taking donations.

It wasnt what I expected. The artwork in the first floor room was not very well-done in my opinion. Upstairs featured a huge room, with what looked like POSTERS of African American actresses, singers, poets etc of decades ago. I was hoping to learn something new about our culture or see some interesting artifacts. Saw nothing. Hate I drove 80 minutes, round trip to come here. At least it was free admission and free parking...

Must see to understand black history.

I went to see the Monticello display. It was numbing and interesting. The stories reminded me of elementary school library. It was worth the time. Furniture making was serious during those times. Last day to see is the 21st, Monday.

Historic and creatively inspiring and satisfying. A must-see for all Americans but especially for African descendents of the diaspora!

Attended a graduation party at the venue and it was very nice except for the kitchen and restrooms. This build has undergone renovations over the years but the kitchen and restrooms have not been touched.If you intend to rent the venue for your event please look the kitchen and restrooms over first. We had to clean the kitchen before we could even start prepping the food yet they required that we clean the kitchen before leaving. In all honesty the kitchen was cleaner when we left than when we got there.

It has a lot of very interesting black history, objects, pictures etc.

I visited this museum while attending the Texas State Fair. The exhibit was ok. Coming from living in DC, I couldnt expect a Smithsonian museum.

Admission is free until you arrive. Then its $10 at the door. No sign, no apology.No correction to their automated message saying admission is free for groups under 10. How do I know the admission fee of $10 is not a scam? No adult in charge to clarify this with. We drove 60 miles round trip to enjoy this Museum. #disappointment
