Negative vibes! I wasnt sure how exactly the classes worked here so when I checked in at the desk I paid the day fee then went looking for the body pump class. I went the wrong way including upstairs looking for it. I entered the class 6 minutes late. I was then immediately questioned about whether I had checked in at the front desk bc I didnt have a wrist band. I explained that I had and had paid the fee. I guess you need to tell the desk you want to do a class and get a wrist band to enter (which I didnt know). Anyway the instructor went on to say I must not have checked in bc they wouldnt have let me into the class since I was late. She then apologized to the whole class for my interruption. I have no problem with a strict late to class not admitted policy if its posted. However to call out someone in front of a whole class for not checking in properly seemed excessive. Thankfully Im not fragile in my fitness journey, imagine someone just trying a gym for the first time in years and having that experience! Sometimes people just have who knows what go in with their morning and end up being 6 minutes late, they still made it, they are there wanting to improve themselves and to deny that or turn that into a negative thing or to publicly call that out for whatever reason seems like the opposite of fitness inspiration to me. Otherwise the facility seemed nice and the front desk attendant was very nice. Ill definitely not be returning until they find some positive instructors.

Outstanding Recreation Fitness Center. If youre just passing through as a tourist (Mesa Verde, Canyons of the Ancients), give this center a visit for fitness classes. The trainers are outstanding and the price per class is very fair. They start very early and run classes throughout the day. A great way to start the day before doing other sightseeing stuff like visiting the National Parks, hiking, mountain biking.

I love working out here! It is always clean, not very busy and very friendly staff. The only things I would like to be different is the size of the exercise room, there is not much space to do free lifting and other exercises, and a HOT TUB! If they had a hot tub I would come every day rather than just 5 days a week!

This is an amazing gem for Cortez. You wouldnt expect to find such an up to date facility with most of the amenities in a little place like this. If youre looking for bodybuilding or anything beyond family fun, community building, and staying healthy then this isnt the place for you!

Previous entry:The citizens tax dollars paid to build and still maintain this facility, but the usage fees are still insanely High...12/22/2018:We attended an event that we hosted at the rec center today. The environment as always was Pleasant.I do agree with my above commentary about the rec center. The costs associated with having any sort of regular usage or membership for a taxpayer created venue, are still excessive in my opinion.I would like to say, as a part of my repeated refrain, that I will never understand the entitlement employees seem to take any more with customers. Dont quote me on this, but I believe the manager was called over to allow me into the room that I had rented. I had previously paid all fees and deposits. The woman, possibly a Linda, was very nice - if she were my boss. There was a bit of miscommunication from when I had paid for the rental of the room to the moment that I was allowed access; I believed that the deposit I had put down on the room covered the cleaning costs and she was alerting me to the fact that it didnt cover the cleaning costs; that I was expected to do the cleaning, and then I would receive back my deposit. Had she done so as employee to customer, with a modicum of customer service, there would have been no problem. Unfortunately, as I come across in both corporations and Mom and Pop, even as in this case with state employees that deal with the public, customer service is a concept of the past. Employees and especially employers or bosses, now seem to think that they are doing the customer a favor by providing a service, rather than it to be as it should be considered, the customer providing them with a paycheck through providing cash for those services. When we enter an establishment or a business, there are certain rules or etiquettes that we as customers need to follow, and as long as those are followed, then we should be acceded to as the customer in all regards, and treated with that level of respect. I find that rarely happens these days. For me, that just means I give fewer and fewer businesses my money. One final thought on the rec center and renting rooms there. I prefer cash rather than credit whenever possible, and so paid for this room with cash. When I paid, as stated above, I didnt believe I would be getting any money back. However, upon finding out that I would be receiving my deposit back if the premises were left as they were received, I was incorrectly assuming that I would be handed the cash when handing over clean premises. However that was an assumption I should not have made... Apparently, when one pays with cash, though I had already had my room signed off on being appropriately clean, I now must wait for City Hall to sign off on the return of my money??? Not too impressive to say the least!I do want to say that the immediate service of the customer service behind the desk and on the ground, rather than management, was excellent as always.

Good times for the whole family! Yet, the unattended children borderline hit the elderly that share the pool with them. Great facility. A city as small as Cortez usually doesnt have a Rec Center this big or nice. You would expect a Rec Center like this in a large city like Colorado Springs.Lets talk about the pools. There is a half-olympic length lap pool with about 10 lanes. This larger pool is about 150,000 gallons. The pool uses gravity feed bottom drains so there is no chance of getting sucked against it and trapped. The pool also drains along a covered top gutter along the whole pool. The temperature of this larger pool stays at around 81 degrees. The smaller pool is a kids pool with a climbable water fort, a lazy river, and a 30 ft high looping slide. This pool is about 90,000 gallons and stays at a temperature between 84-86 degrees. Both pools are indoor and are staffed by lifeguards. There are 3 locker rooms; mens, womens, and family. The mens and womens locker rooms are open change with privacy stalls for being the restrooms. The mens and womens locker rooms each have about 5 individual shower stalls with privacy curtains. The family locker room has lockers and 4 separate bathroom/shower rooms with a locking door on each. This is meant for families with small children to get changed together. If you are not comfortable changing in the mens or womens locker rooms, you can change here or use a bathroom stall inside the shared locked rooms.Lets talk about the fitness room. On the second floor there is a weight/fitness area. There are stairs or an elevator to reach this floor. There is a variety of equipment; treadmills, ellipticals, stair climber, a rowing machine. There are several TVs setup to watch while using one of these cardio machines. There is also an adjacent section for weight lifting. Most weight lifting equipment is a specific machine for one area of the body. For example a bench press machine, a bicep curl machine, a tricep extension machine, butterfly machine, shoulder press machine, abdominal crunch machine, etc. The only free weights are the dumbbells that go up to 100lbs (I think). There is also a bench with foot holds to do sit ups (and inverse sit ups) off the ground. On this floor there is also a cushioned walking track that goes around the top perimeter of the full sized gymnasium below. The track is a great feature to cool down after an intense workout, and also you can watch some of the city league events going on in the gym while you have a nice stroll above. 16 laps on the walking/jogging track is 1 mile. This facility also has a few rooms dedicated to fitness classes offered by a variety of instructors. Such as; Zumba, Tai Chi, Yoga, etc. There is also a Rockwall that is about 35 feet high that requires a harness and supervision, but for bouldering, a person can stay below 10 feet and move horizontally without a harness. The floor is spongey so fall injury is minimized. There are even eyelets in the Rockwall for free climbers that want to climb and belay each other. There are two regulation sized racquetball courts with a yearly tournament. Unfortunately spectator seating is limited.Overall this is a great facility with tons to do. A cool feature of the fitness room is you can overlook almost all parts of the lower floor. There is a full glass wall that lets you overlook the entire pool (in case you want to work out while the kids swim), you can see the Rockwall, and of course the gym. Brilliant design if you ask me.
