Walk through the exhibits as if you were with the sailors. Many models. The paintings are large and bear minute detail. The gift shop is small and the souvenirs few but the variety is interesting from teacups to uniforms. The artifact of the CSS Jackson is supplemented by a framework outlining the missing ship section that gives it scale. A quiet, peaceful outing. Reasonably priced.

Great place to visit in Columbus Georgia. It is very educational. And I recently learned the museum operates on donations alone. It is awesome to see what the power of giving can give to a community. I loved seeing the pieces collected by the museum. Great place to take the family for a history lesson on early Columbus.

I really was not expecting much but was I surprised. This is a great little museum about a little known aspect of the Civil War. There are both massive artifacts and replicas as well as some of the smaller more personal items that often bring history to life. If you are anywhere near Columbus, Georgia you owe it to yourself to spend 60-90 mins at an excellent presentation of an almost forgotten but very dramatic part of our nations history. It is very near to some other local places worth visiting.

Did we miss something? I know a part of the exhibit was closed....8 dollars but they operate on donations alone. Very short exhibit. The Army infantry museum right down the street accepts donations to view and it is huge. They dont make you pay anything but would love for you to only donate 5 dollars. We spent maybe 30 min in the naval museum and over 2 hours in the Infantry museum... So. It was a neat thing to see but not worth 8 dollars.

I Have been to Vicksburg, MS and seen The Cairo. The wreck of The Jackson, albeit only the bottom, is enormous compared to the Cairo. they also have several other ships and artifacts to see, life the uniforms and flags. It was very informative and educational. Small museum but excellent historical, well displayed exhibits. Great gift shop too. We really enjoyed our visit. Loved the wharf, felt like we stepped back in time. I highly recommend visiting, great place for kids too.

The recovered CSS Jackson is the centerpiece of the museum. Its hard to understand the scale of an iron clad when you only see them in a text book, but this really puts it into perspective. Its about the length of a shrimp boat. The size of the timber used in the construction of the hull is surprising as well. Some looked like they just shaved the bark off of 100 year old oak trees.Other exhibits include weapons from the era as well as a timeline of the Civil War.

Extremely good, really loved the exhibits, having many artifacts and relics, as well as many of the exhibits being very interactive and highly informative. While small, there was a ton of information and things to do and learn in the museum, couldve spent all day there. They have video lessons by the curator, audio tours from you phone you have to find by going through the exhibit, you can actually go into a recreation of life below decks of a civil war vessel, and even have scale models of the old civil war ironclads and an old civil warship you can tour outside. While its appearance from the main road could be improved, this was a fantastic museum, a hidden gem of Columbus Georgia. If you enjoyed the National Infantry Museum, this is another must-see thats only 5 minutes away.

An interesting glimpse into a bygone era. A bit off the path but recommended for anyone with interest in American history, the American Civil War and Ironclads from that time period. The recovered remnants of the C.S.S. Jackson (aka CSS Muscogee) are housed in one entire section of the Museum. A metal framework outlines the missing area of the ironclad; the scale of which is surprisingly larger than one would imagine. Impressive life sized walk thru exhibits include a Union Ship of the day and a Confederate Ironclad and dock area. Numerous painting, artifacts, flags, and photographs make this museum a worthy excursion for those wishing to see a bit of 19th century Americana. Admittedly a Civil War buff, I spent a quiet and fascinating few hours getting a real feel for the navies of that era. Well worth it.

Well worth the time. CSS Jackson was much larger than expected. I think some of the narrative could be better edited to provide more comprehensive overview of the Souths naval war effort. Also nice collection of artifacts, such as flags and uniforms. If you have any interest in the Civil War this will help fill in a missing part.

This museum has some interesting design elements that help the visitor to let the visitor absorb the content of the displays. The best is a large dimly lit room that contains the rotted ribs of a rebel ironclad more than 200 feet long. Instead of rebuilding the missing parts, they did something better that allows the idea of ships design to soak in while retaining the feeling that you are viewing the remains of something real and old. Light colored metal tubing was used to complete the outlined shape of the ironclad. Take time to actually read the text that accompanies the various displays of naval action during the war. History is always more interesting when you dig deep and let the stories of the events and individuals involved wash over you.

My daughter and I went to this museum today. The total cost was $16.20 for both her and I. We were there for all of 15 minutes before a bomb threat had the entire building evacuated. Its a beautiful building and although we were there for a short time, we only had enough time to see the main exhibit. What a shame as we may not be able to go back to see the entire museum. Great history to see and view which is why we decided to go here first on our trip. Building is taken care of as well as the exterior and what we saw of the exhibit we did get to see.

It cost us $55 and it took an hour because we stretched it a long ways. Not all that great for small children who cant read. They have pieces of 3 ships and when I say pieces I am not exaggerating. Around these are a some stationary artifacts and some supporting structures. The vast majority is reading. They one dreadful video. With such a vast and interesting subject you would think they could really make a great space. At best it is just mediocre.
