The tree was struck by lightning during this mornings thunderstorm (October 23, 2020) and for awhile was on fire internally. Please send some loving vibes to this great living giant bur oak tree.
A huge tree for sure. Being from south Louisiana it was a bit of a letdown considering I had a live oak bigger than that in my back yard.
A great romantic destination. Bring blankets and snacks, leave the music on low and talk with your significant other.
Pictures dont do it justice it is a must see.
This tree is a classic Columbia landmark. Protect it at all costs! It’s a great photo opportunity.
Beautiful tree. Peaceful spot.
This tree is a local treasure. Once part of a dense forest lining the Missouri, it is the last standing reminder. This tree stood when Lewis and Clark passed through this area. Its over 350 years old and has somehow survived storms, tornadoes, earthquakes, blizzards, and idiots carving and painting on it. Its right near the Katy Trail and well worth a visit.

I love this tree. I love this tree. ️
Beautiful Burr Oak that is sadly dying. Well worth a look. Be forewarned, if you bike there youll be greeted by all the layabouts who drove there, somewhat diminishing the experience. Also, dummies built the road far too close to it - probably contributing to the dying - and really stupid people feel compelled to tag it. I guess if I were an idiot I would vandalize 300 year old organisms, too.
I spent a couple of hours with this large, beautiful tree on crisp clear evening. I know not everyone is a nature lover, but to stand next to a tree that is very large and old is amazing. Are there bigger and better trees in the world-sure, but this one was within a reasonable drive and a must if you travel highway 70. Just outside of Columbia MO-sadly for photographers-light pollution, but easy enough to get to. The farms and old barns were also great to see on the way back to this spot. Do something a little different and just off the beaten path, what the heck make a day trip out of it and eat some good food in Columbia too!
I was soo lost.. found the big oak tree!
The Bur Oak, or Big Tree is a community treasure. The oldest standing tree in the area, many other local features are namesakes of this attraction. From cycling routes to Beard Oils (Im NOT kidding), locals love to be associated with this witness to history.
If you just see a big tree, you need to open up your eyes to life. Your a passing moment for this 350 year old work of nature. A monument shared by hundreds of many generations.I was a freshman at MIZZOU, just joined a frat and rode out for a road trip with 6 guys in a massive 225 convertible with a case of PBR and stopped on a hot Saturday afternoon in the shade of the big oak in 1977.Years later and about 5 MS 150s later, I still stop and have a memory. Some delinquent ripped off the historical marker, but Im glad to see all the internet sites and even a brewery now that recognize the big burr oak. This is the real life Giving Tree that Shel wrote about.
Dude, so like this tree, is like really, really, big. Not like one of those red Indian trees in California, but a different kind of tree, like one of those walking trees, TreeDude, from Lord of the Rings. This tree is like the lonely mountain of trees. Go see it.
So cool. Love the big tree . :D
Great spot! Not in Wooldridge, though, which is across the MO River. The Big Bur Oak is between Huntsdale + McBaine.
Great place to see beautiful night sky!
Beautiful, massive oak, and a nice respite from the highway the trail
