Quiet, low level walk amongst the trees by the Sacramento River. Early evening, dusk I usually see a few large does.

Best place for dog swimming. Perfect for a short getaway, canoeing, swimming, rafting, fishing, short walks with few people. Plenty of little turnouts along River Road for resting. Allot of drive up small parks and boat launches for fishing. And its a nearby alternative to five mile at Bidwell when its crowded.

The Washout used to be THE place to go. It was amazing all year round, but the spring and summers were amazing. There would be cars, and trucks parked 3 and 4 deep along the mile or so gravel bar. People partying, carousing, hooking up, and just having a great time. Those were the days!! THEN after the infamous Pioneer Days riots, The State of California came along and decided the entire area needed to be regulated, patrolled, and gated. It is still a beautiful area, the entire Sacramento River is bitchin. From Shasta to Sacramento. The Washout DID get a bit off th hook...but it was all good.

This park is very peaceful and nice! Aside from the occasional boat riding down the river, you could spend a whole day out there without bumping into other people. The area is blanketed with forest and youre likely to see deer.I love this area for fishing. There are several creeks that flow into the Sacramento River in this park, making for some great bass fishing. The area is also well-maintained by the local ranger station. 10/10 recommend this park for family outings, dog walks, and fishing trips. Bring your bug spray or long sleeves though.

So I read about the guy seeing otters and thought yeah - sure. But I had not been out there for years when the kids were young and we saw a rare San Francisco Giant Garter snake (really big ugly head is a tip off). We used to see hundreds of turtles in the summer swimming and basking in the creek. Personally I would be very hesitant to swim there, especially with kids. The creek is wide and swampy - not clear water. This visit is Mid Winter so you could see through the brush better. Took the dogs on leashes and walked the two loop trails. Buddy said hey look at that small heron, is it chasing a fish? Looked thought at first it was another bird in the water plants, but no it is a fresh water otter. The heron would follow the otter, it would stir up the water and the heron would catch a minnow. Team Work!!! Then looking close you could see 2 slides and what looked like the entrance to a den. The otter hung a while, was not skittish. Thanks to the other reviewer I went and got to see a not so common sight, but with the den just across the creek a patient viewer could also catch a lucky sighting. Where you park go to water near a bench then 30-50 feet to right and look across creek. Springtime is really great for all sorts of nature sighting, but very easy hike even for old people like me.

The sac river is always a nice place to swim because no matter how hot it is that waters always ffffffreezing and it feels soooo gd. Do me a fav though. If you bring your kids be a parent first because it has a strong current and watch your kids. Oh and Im sad that I have to actually mention this, but dont drink if you bring your kids on the river DUUUUUHHHH.

My favorite park in the United States! I make it my #1 goal to visit upper park every time I come home to see the family. Couldnt say enough good things about Bear Hole, Salmon Hole, and Brown Hole (Alligator Hole and Day Camp are so-so) to do them justice. Ive spent countless hours climbing, swimming and adventuring in this park, it will always have a spot in my soul of great appreciation.

Just enjoyed a beautiful May morning hike on the North Rim trail with my husband, Dennis, and dog, Lucy. Lucy loved being off-leash, meeting other friendly dogs on the trail, and especially a splash in Horseshoe Lake to cool off. Dennis loved the scenic views and took lots of pictures. I enjoyed the sunshine, fresh air, and panorama views from the Coastal Mountains, across the valley, and to the Sierra Mountains. This park is loved by all who live and visit Chico.
