The Adler Planetarium Skyline Wall is located on the northeast tip of Northerly Island, and offers one of the best possible views of the entire Chicago skyline. It’s a great place to go with a group if you’re looking for an amazing photo backdrop. The entire walkway offers beautiful skyline views, but my favorite place is all the way at end next to the Adler Planetarium where the walkway curves to the right.

The breathtaking view of the city of Chicago from the Adler Planetarium and the Astronomy Museum was the first planetarium in the western hemisphere. What appeared in the image is not just a beautiful background of the city, the wonderful sculpture that can be seen at the entrance of the observatory is titled The man enters the cosmos is a bronze sculpture made by Henry Moore. It is definitely an incredible space to spend the day admiring the view and all that the planetarium has to offer from shows, wonderful exhibits loaded with quite interesting and fascinating information.

One of the best views of the skyline in the entire city. The farther out west you walk, the more you can see. At night the city lights are spectacular and a must see. If there are fireworks going on at navy pier, you get a unique view, but may need binoculars. One of the best spots to catch the sunset with the skyline in Chicago.

This planetarium has a lot of shows and exhibits to offer; we easily spent the day here. The all access pass includes all the shows but you can only get a ticket for two at a time; after that you have to keep going back to the ticket counter for more tickets even though theyre free with all access, which is my only complaint. The planetarium is very clean and the staff very helpful. The Galileo cafe is a nice spot for lunch and youre right on lake Michigan! There are also several kid areas for little ones to explore and craft. Cant wait to go back.

Oh, the views you would have! Whether watching the sunrise over lake Michigan, or the moonrise on the lake...or the view of the cityscape leaves one mesmerized. No wonder it is a destination by itself during summer. Bring a picnic pac and stay a while. Parking is a bit tough to find and often becomes very limited during special events but go round and round and you are bound to score a spot. Worth waiting for. Gathering places for both skywatchers and citywatchers.

2018As a leader in public engagement, the Adler Planetarium inspires everyone to #lookup with us and connect with the sky. This was evident during our Observe Mars! event where 3,000 friends gathered to see Mars together as a community and in locations across Chicagoland, as we expanded our ‘Scopes in the City reach to introduce new folks to the sky above.Other highlights of 2018 included the launch of Letters to Lovell—a letter-writing campaign asking the public to share stories of how Captain Lovell has inspired them. Letters from people across the globe expressed how his bravery and perseverance encouraged them to pursue their dreams, and to face their own challenges in times of adversity. These letters were then presented to Captain Lovell in the form of the Adler’s inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Celestial Ball—the most successful Celestial Ball to date. The Adler’s student-led initiative The Aquarius Project, created to recover meteorites from the bottom of Lake Michigan, held its first recovery missions in the summer. The project garnered local and national media coverage, a Chicago Innovation Award, and the Adler’s first multi-episode podcast to tell the story. In 2018, the Adler’s Far Horizons high-altitude ballooning program, began a new groundbreaking light pollution research project in tandem with the Adler Planetarium’s Youth Organization for Lights Out (Y.O.L.O.) program. The Far Horizons NITELite mission is preparing to send balloons high above Chicago with sensitive cameras to snap thousands of images to create a map of the city at night. The data gathered will complement readings being compiled from ground-level monitors. This research, driven by students and volunteers, will characterize the lighting in Chicago and identify sources of light pollution, with several test missions already completed. This is the first time light pollution is being mapped from high-altitude balloons, and was a major focus of the Far Horizons programming in the 2018-2019 academic year.2019In April, the Adler became the first planetarium in space with the launching of its ThinSat, a nano-satellite about the size of a slice of bread, via an Antares 110 rocket. A collaborative of scientists, engineers, and students from Chicago’s ITW David Speer Academy built a multi-band photometer to ride aboard the ThinSat. The photometer was designed to measure the Earth’s brightness in six colors from the perspective of the launched nano-satellite.

Best spot in Chicago for Downtown Chicago photos. All those amazing shots you in the movies of Downtown Chicago? Here. All those amazing wedding photos you see? Here. All the cotillion photos. You guessed it right here. This is the one spot in all of Chicagoland a visitor must come and take a picture. Even over a picture at Cloud Gate (The Bean). Parking will either be extremely easy or a nightmare there isnt much in the middle. Visit the Shedd if you have a few hours to see marine life.
