Balkrishna Doshi -- Architecture for the People was showing when I was last at Wrightwood 659 and the space was transformed! Its a beautiful building and a destination on its own created by the Japanese Architect Tadao Ando.I had never heard of Doshi, who is an Indian Architect who gained world-wide fame and worked almost exclusively in India. The exhibit is laid out well and is easy to understand without too much reading. The organizers had reading in mind when developing the supporting materials that were handed out at the beginning of my visit. There were beautifully published and contained both an Exhibition Guide and a Timeline of Doshis life. These contain copies of the panels on the walls and allows viewers to circulate without congregating to read descriptions of the different projects. All in all an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon during the pandemic. They were very careful with social distancing and only allowed 24 people into the building. Dont miss this interesting exhibit through December 12th, 2020.

Stunning gallery space. An absolute must visit for any art lover. There were tons of really thoughtful and informative staff on hand to answer questions about both that building and the art on display. I couldn’t believe how huge this space was! The stonewall show was well curated and featured a ton of Chicago natives. Totally awesome, can’t wait to go back. FYI- Tickets should be reserved online in advance.

This place is a hidden gem in a quiet neighborhood in Lincoln park. You would not expect this gallery in a place like this. The inside is an architectural masterpiece. You can score free tickets just follow their Instagram. They have amazing exhibits that are visually pleasing and make you think. Don’t forget to go to the top floor and enjoy the view. It’s so calming just to explore this place. I will be back in Feb to see their new exhibit!

Amazing art, extremely well-curated and with an accessible set-up that makes you question why everywhere is not like 659. The orientation was very helpful and I was pleasantly shocked at how much work was on display, not only in sheer numbers but also in the wide variety of topics and artists. An amazing visit, and if I ever end up in Chicago again Ill be sure to swing by. :)

Top few gallery/museum spaces of its kind in America. You’ll be blown away by the creativity of the space and the high quality and uniqueness of the space’s ongoing special exhibits. Superb addition to Chicago, and shows off the charm of our north side neighborhoods.

A world-class art gallery in Chicago! Beautiful architecture, the interior reminds me a little of the Guggenheim in New York where you can see all floors when walking the stairs and from the foyer. The top floor has panoramic views of the area. Accompanied by a team of young and highly enthusiastic crew. Thank you for opening up the space for the arts. Well appreciated.

They had four stories of exhibits on Gay art and history. It was one of the most incredibly well curated exhibits Ive seen on that topic. There was a gathering of the Lambda Legal Contributors. It was very nicely done. The building has recently been remodeled and its stunning!

Its a cool space but the layout is funky / non intuitive and the hassle to actually see the space is absurd. Online, register, time slot, you MUST print ticket, then you have to wait outside for your allotted time. the building is cool, i didnt find the dimensions of citizenship exhibit very worthy -- why am i looking at so many screens at a museum?

Amazing museum. The history behind the building, the internal restructuring by famous Tasao Ando was a piece of art in itself. The current exhibition about Tetsuya Ishida was powerful. Dark and thought provoking but absolutely beautiful. Was able to go with friend during week and she scored free tickets. Can’t wait to explore the new exhibitions coming in 2020.

Ive seen two exhibitions here and they were the best art exhibits Ive ever seen. This place holds excellent and important exhibits. I saw one about AIDS in America as well as their current exhibit in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots - the curator is Jonathan D Katz, who is THE curator of LGBT/queer/gay art. I cannot wait to see what Wrightwood 659 does next!

I dont know how I feel about this place. The museum is free and gorgeously designed. It is a small affair that wont give you museum fatigue. When I went, there was a retrospective of Corbusier and Ando (probably spelled wrong, Im not an architect) that was very well put together. My only gripe was that it was on the pretentious side. Dont touch the concrete!
