There are many great picture opportunities in this location. Pyramid shaped crypts, baby crib shaped statues, many great statues, a nice open marsh separating the area and a tree with the most character of any tree you will every meet! If photography is your thing, this is a great place to visit.

This has all the markers of the cemeteries you read about in Halloween books. The graves are very old and ornate, cracked and bent in places where trees have grown through them. The mausoleums in particular are fascinating. You get a real sense of how old Charleston is here. The cemetery buts right up against the marsh, which makes for a highly scenic experience, but bugs and heat may be a problem in the Summer. A great place to go for a walk in the morning, though.

This is a beautiful and historic cemetery. Please take the time to honor those interred from the Civil War. The serenity of these acres will stay with you forever.

If you like history, this is a great reminder of times past. A little morbid for a tourist stop, but we went on Memorial day and all of the veteran Graves were decorated with flags.

Burial site of the crew members of the H L Hunley Confederate submarine raised from Charleston harbor after nearly 150 years. It sunk the USS Housatonic in the first successful submarine warfare in 1864. Awesome and awe inspiring setting under ancient magnolias and other local flora and fauna.

Beautiful cemetery, like taking a trip into the past. I had never seen so many different interrmenta such as above ground mausoleums, huge crypts and the water surrounding withHanging moss takes you back in time. Great photo opts and it probably would take a serious person whos really into quiet, peaceful, and informative cemetery weeks to get through this one that covers over 91 acres. The first day I went in the rain, but it didnt bother me, I kept walking with rain gear. It made the trip more ethereal and enchanting. The second trip was done in the sunlight, but I really enjoyed it best under cloudy weather. Magnificent pictures and I took a ton. I want to return and see more as I only had a couple of days. M-F it stays open till 5:00 p.m. with someone at the front office. Sat & Sun no one is there but a caretaker. It closes promptly at 6.00 p.m.summer hrs. I forgot to mention the sculpture and deep thought that must have gone into the original interments. It was obvious due to the condition of the sculptured graves were from wealthy families who spared no expense. Most were in good condition but the black shadows on stone that attaches itself over time was there. Still a peaceful, beautiful, and definite trip into the past. Mausoleums can be walked into and some have beautiful stained glass in the ceilings such as the Virgin Mary.

My brother and I made a long planned trip to see the H.L. Hunley this year and learned about the reburial of the crews in Magnolia Cemetery so we decided to check it out. It was like stepping back to the Old South, steeped in charm and history. One of my favorite places in Charleston! Well worth the side trip if you are a history buff or interested in genealogy or want to walk under the oaks hanging with Spanish moss and imagine a time long ago.
