Flawless acoustics and comfortable seats enhance the great shows offered at The Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences. The hands-on childrens discovery museum and the small but high quality art museum make it fun for all ages and interests. Theres also a great planetarium that also shows interesting, educational short films.

About the only complaint would be parking. The lot next door fills up fast so you need to look around which ended up being cheaper on a side street with a parking meter. That would be the only negative I cam report.Everything is pretty amazing. My 5 year old absolutely had a ball here and could jave spent a few days on the lower level easily. Admission is fair at $9 per adult and $7.50 per child. Add $3 each with admission and take in the a Planetarium show.We spent about 4 hours here but cut ourselves short due to we knew time was running out on our parking meter. They also have a cafeteria on the lower level and while we didnt eat there it looked decent with nachos, salads, pretzels etc.Would recommend as a nice day trip for anyone with children.

I used to go to the clay center all the time as a kid. The science museum used to be fun for all ages with lots of stuff to do and see. Its a lot smaller now and less to do. The waterworks area was over run with small children and it was too crowded to actually do anything but watch other kids splash around. The measuring room was interesting but It was more for children around the age where they know numbers. The town on the bottom floor was cute but it only has enough stuff to distract a 5 yr old for so long. And then the anatomy area. It seemed more like it was mostly for teenagers because a 5year old doesnt care how fast their heart is beating and they dont seem to care much about anatomy. The music area was fun and the kids seemed to enjoy it. There used to be a whole room full of interesting things that could keep kids busy for hours and it was pretty cool but when they remodeled they took it out. Like the big wall that was a magnet. Or the thing with lasers and mirrors that if you lined them up correctly it would rain. It isnt what it used to be and I dont think it was worth the money because the kids I had with me got bored kinda quick. The planetarium show was in my opinion the most interesting thing.

Traveling with kids? You’re guaranteed to have a fun-filled afternoon at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences of West Virginia! Exhibit after exhibit is strewn throughout this 2-story center, including an Avampato Discovery Museum. This interactive museum is dedicated to inspiring people of all ages with a lifelong love for learning as well as an appreciation of the world and our place in it.Learn about the science of sound in The Maier Foundation Music Studio, splash around in WaterWork, and get your body moving in Healthy Me! My Town reminded me of the time I visited the Discovery Center of Springfield in Springfield, Missouri with my kids a few years ago. In My Town, the kids have the jobs, get to spend imaginary money, and participate in fun activities every day! Will your child be a veterinarian today? A cashier? How about a mechanic or even a mayor? The possibilities are endless in this hands-on imaginary town of fun!Outside of the Clay Center is an array of these beautiful, whimsical, life-size statues! This bronze sculpture, “Festival Delle Arti” by Harry Marinsky, was placed in 2005. Closer to the building, you’ll also see Albert Paley’s 64-foot “Hallelujah” sculpture.

This place is neat, but the main reason we went were for planetetarium shows that were listed on the website. Unfortunately, the schedule had changed and neither show was available. If you are traveling from outside Charleston, it might be a good idea to call to make sure your reason for going is still available since they dont update the website.

I have been here many times for many different reasons. I took my kids here a lot when they were small. They have a room specifically for smaller children with a ball pit that has a ball canon as well as lots of other exploratory activities. They have a room for older kids (and adults) that has a lot of hands on science exhibits. The human body Hollywood squares is a dont miss. They have art displays that change from time to time. There is a cafeteria where you can get a quick bit. I have been there for concerts. It is small enough that there is not a bad seat in house. They also have speakers. I recently seen Stephen King speak there. He was great! Whatever you are into, you will find it here!

Does not deserve one star. I brought my granddaughters here who were visiting from California. I was so embarrassed. This place is a big nothing. The so-called art gallery; one big room with photographs of singers nobody knows. What a waste of space. Dont throw your money away, because this place aint cheap. And if you go here, thats what youll be doing. A big nothing and an embarrassment to all West Virginians.

There is no short list of positive things that I can say about the Clay Center. There is such a variety of of involvement that this space encourages in our community.Example One: Every time that my mom visits with my siblings we have to go to the clay center! They love the climbing structure and where so excited when the new water exhibit displayed.Example Two: The art exhibit upstairs is a fabulous way to experience some post brunch culture with my girlfriends. The 21 Americans Exhibit is up now and there is a powerful message that is being shared.Example Three: I have attended many fundraisers at the clay center that benefit local charities including Habitat for Humanity, The Charleston Ballet, African Americans Philanthropy in action and the CAMC Foundation. All beautifully executed.Example Four ( I could make more but well end here): They bring partners into our community Like Google that help provide free trainings to area professionals in an effort to enhance the value of our area.Bonus: The Clay Center always has date night and special celebrations covered. They bring a variety of big names, great shows, and stunning concerts to Charleston to ensure there is always that something special option.

This is a great place for small children. Its basically a childrens museum that is all hands on activities. My 2 year old nephew and 3 year old niece loved this place. We spent well over 4 hours here and they didnt want to leave. The museum is well kept. I was disappointed that part of the museum was closed. Prices I believe are a little too high. $9 for adults and $7.50 for children. Children under 2 and under are free. I wouldnt recommend going if you dont have children with you.

So much to learn through hands on, interactive exhibits that are engaging in a fun way. My kids didnt even realize they were learning while having fun. The venue is organized and the lay out is efficient. Admission is fairly cheap. Id recommend not eating there though. Prices were sky high and they were out of half of what they offered on their menu, on a day for homeschoolers that was pretty crowded.

The Clay Center for the Arts has, over time, become something unique not only to West Virginia, but the entire country. A performance hall with a superb childrens exhibit. The performance hall presents world class entertainment, however, where the Clay Center shines is the exhibition rooms for children, which has gradually become, in my opinion, one of the best in the country. I congratulate the Clay Center for its vision.

The performance hall of the Clay Center should not be missed. It is a wonderful venue to enjoy a night out with family and friends. Last night, I enjoyed listening to the symphony, but before that ... The conductor gave us an inside talk ... Exploring the nuances of the pieces, times, artists who wrote and performance. Cookies lovingly made by the parents of Junior Symphony were in the great hall where the youth regaled and warmed us with their music. It was a lovely night out of the cold of a late spring storm.

Maier Hall was beautiful, though the seating was cramped. If you have broad shoulders, either go for a Box seat or an Aisle seat. Also, when reserving seats, Floor level seating from A-F is Very Close to the stage. I suggest G-O on the floor level. Even so, I cannot imagine there is a bad seat in the whole Hall. There will be little problems in hearing and seeing. The bathrooms are good and have many stalls (I am female, so I only have knowledge of the Womens restroom, but I cant imagine they would be much different in size), and are handicap-accessable with about 4-6 stalls at the end closest to the sinks (perhaps more, I did not walk the whole length of the stall area)I was unable to experience the rest of the Clay Center, as I was there for a 7:30pm show on a Saturday, and everything but the restaurant downstairs was closed. Wonderful sound by the WV Symphony. I was emotional.
