So interesting. The exhibits were well done, lots of interesting things to see. Loved both videos shown. The curator was very helpful and told of several more interesting this about this remarkable couple and the contributors to the exhibit. It was worth the drive from Wichita to visit this museum. We learned about this couple by watching a documentary about them at the Tallgrass film festival. Well done!

We were early getting into Chanute today so I searched for something to see. Not much in this little town but did see a Museum so I decided to take the boys here. They were a little apprehensive to go but said that was fine.Free parking when we arrived and I guess on Saturday its free to enter. The lady at the desk took us in to watch a short video. Although I wasnt sure I wanted to watch it, it really is a must see. You understand so much as you walk through the museum with that short 10 min video. Its really a must see if you are not familiar with what the museum is all about. The best part of this was my boys really enjoyed it. From the interactive musical instruments you are allowed to play with and the gong which they hit multiple times, they really had a good time.

Although I had never heard the story of the Johnsons, I found this museum to be very interesting. View the videos first to get a feel for the Safari moviemaking background. There are activities for children in several rooms. Not sure a young child could sit still for the movie.I wish some of the artifacts had more associated details, such as dates, item description. Several did, but many didnt.

An unexpected gem of the history of a bygone day when the world was discovering the wild places through the new technology of film, and some of the key people who made those films.

I cant say enough about the staff here. They are amazing and knowledgeable people. We were givin a tour and the young lady who gave it was happy to answer any questions from the kids. We were there with a group from a local school and as most teens do, they tended to get a little loud. I was sure our guide was going to get upset but she never once got frustrated or raised her voice. It is always an awesome experience and there is always something new to be seen or heard.

The Johnsons traveled in Africa. The Museum contains records of their adventures. Very interesting, it has been downscaled to what it was. They get visitors from all over the world. I have been there several times over the years

When I was a kid, I read Osas book on their adventures and have been a big fan for a lot of years. The museum was a great view into some of the artifacts that have been collected, but more so the videos and movies they shot of their life on safari. I wouldnt spend all day looking at this museum, but an hour or two is about perfect. Expect to see a lot of masks and African artifacts, but also a small bit about another famous lady that was a mountain climber. Worth the time and money and thanks to the great staff that made my trip enjoyable!

A hidden gem in remote Chanute, Kansas, the Safari Museum chronicles the travels of Martin and Osa Johnson, the pioneers in adventure film making 80 years before the Discovery Channel existed. Their African and Polynesian mask collection is bar none the greatest Ive seen.
