Theyve done a wonderful job of preserving the site of the last great battle of the War of 1812 - The Battle for New Orleans. The battle and the key role it plays in the growth of our country cant be underestimated and that story is well told here. Everyone, including young kids should stop here. If you see the volunteer dressed in period clothing, join his talk. He is a font of information and takes history and makes it come alive. Dont forget the driving look around the battle field and stop at the National Cemetery to pay your respects.

Good place to learn some lesser-known history about the final point in the War of 1812. Indoor exhibit is quick but informative. Outside has a loop road for either driving or a long walk. If you dont want to drive out to the site, the paddle wheel boat from downtown makes a stop here.

This place is full of such important history and its well-told and preserved here. My whole family loves to watch the yearly reenactment, climb the monument, visit the plantation home, and walk along the Mississippi river levee. There is a gorgeous picnic area sheltered by several sprawling hundred-year-old live oaks. The cannons still work!

In 1814 Andrew Jackson led a group of farmers, frontiersman, backwoods men, free and enslaved Americans down to New Orleans to protect this newly acquired port. New Orleans sits at the mouth of the Mississippi River. The Mississippi rivers being a vast intercontinental waterway which intersects with some of the worlds most productive farm lands makes the port one of the most valuable ports in the world. Britain in 1814 recognized this and sent 8000 British Regulars to capture this strategic port, on the mighty Mississippi. January 8, 1815 Jackson with 5700 miltia met on this field. When the dust cleared almost 2000 British including their commander was killed, wounded or missing. Jackson lost less than a hundred men.Even though this battle was fought after the signing of the Treaty of Ghent it still was important because it gave the young nation pride. And generated a new national hero.If you are in the area, stop in to this little gem of a historical park. There is s small visitor center that is worth a look, but the greatest part is to walk where heroes sacrifice for a young nation.

Great place to learn about history. You can walk or drive around the battle field. Climb the stairs of the Chalmette Monument. Once at the top, view is amazing. The Malus-Beauregard house is impressive. The visitor center has pre-recorded presentations. Also the gift shop sells books, cartridge candy, candy shaped bullets, cups, mugs ect. Any questions you may have the park rangers will answer. Great place to bring your kids or four legged fur babies( on leash, but not allowed in the cemetery) and have a picnic under the cypress trees.

The pirate and his soldiers fought in the battle of 1812 until they triumphed and buried their dead in this camp,Jean Lafitte (c. 1780 – c. 1823) was a French pirate and privateer in the Gulf of Mexico in the early 19th century. He and his elder brother, Pierre, spelled their last name Laffite, but English-language documents of the time used Lafitte. The latter has become the common spelling in the United States, including for places named after him.[1]Lafitte is believed to have been born either in Basque-France or the French colony of Saint-Domingue. By 1805, he operated a warehouse in New Orleans to help disperse the goods smuggled by his brother Pierre Lafitte. After the United States government passed the Embargo Act of 1807, the Lafittes moved their operations to an island in Barataria Bay, Louisiana. By 1810, their new port was very successful; the Lafittes had a profitable smuggling operation and also started to engage in piracy.Though Lafitte warned the other Baratarians of a possible military attack on their base of operations, a United States naval force successfully invaded in September 1814 and captured most of Lafittes fleet. Later, in return for a legal pardon for the smugglers, Lafitte and his comrades helped General Andrew Jackson defend New Orleans from the British in the final battle of the War of 1812.The Lafittes became spies for the Spanish during the Mexican War of Independence and moved to Galveston Island, Texas, where they developed a pirate colony they called Campeche. Lafitte continued attacking merchant ships as a pirate around Central American ports until he died circa 1823, trying to capture Spanish vessels. Speculation about his life and death continues among historians.

Great historical place. There are many signs around the park talking about the history of the battlefield. There was a small exhibit of the battles artifacts along with a nice little gift shop. Having lived near this monument for years I can appreciate its beauty in a place surrounded by, well, not so much beauty. The large, old oak trees are majestic, and the old plantation house is something to see and appreciate. The place has history and it is interesting to learn of the difference in casualties between the British and Americans during the battle fought here. If you visit, dont forget the cemetery off to the side, and if you walk over the levee to the Mississippi there is a concrete wall you can walk on. My rating is with respect to other national parks that I have visited.

The boat trip to get here was fun. It was cold that day, so we didnt wander around on the outside of the boat. Scenery was viewed from inside. Thank goodness there was a small museum on property or it would have been a boring experience. Not much to look at but a field and a bunch of giant trees. The park ranger told interesting stories outside under the trees. The museum had a nice layout and shared authentic dress from the period, plus other soldier things (playing cards, canteen, weapons, etc).
