We had great time hiking two trails today. Took water and had picnic lunch on the coast of the lake. Many available bathrooms. A hot day but most of our second hike, three mile, was in the shade of the trees. Not many people out there today. Single day price per person I think is steep. An annual pass would be well worth it if we decide to go more often. Take time to visit the old Penn farm. Great Texas history there.

Had a great time as usual. Did rv camping this time. Pads are pretty level, full connections, ample space for my 40ft rig, very clean bathrooms and sites. Although a large portion of the park is temporarily closed they have space available thru the week... weekends... not so much... so book well ahead. Happy

Not sure what’s going on a Cedar Hill, but the communication is pretty off. We spent 45 minutes driving around the park looking for available sites, only to be told AFTER we paid to get in, that half of the campsites were closed. When we finally find a site, we call the office to make the reservation, but are informed that certain sites are closed as “emergency campsites” and not available to the public. So we continue on our journey to find another site. After driving past ALL of the remaining sites (which are marked reserved) we finally just decide to drive back to the front office. Once there, we are informed that these sites MAY be available, but no one knows for sure.....I don’t think I will be coming back to Cedar Hill anytime soon after this lack luster experience.

Varied trails. Some 30 minutes to 2 hrs. Theres a map of the park they give you. Can hike, bike, boat, swim or just enjoy lunch. Can bring your own food or barbecue there. They have mini grills. Have to make reservations first. There is a charge depending on what you want to do. Its best to get on their website to see all the options and information. My family and I really enjoyed it. We did a couple of trails. I had packed us lunch for picnic. Went to the swimming and boating side and they have plenty of picnic tables that are spaced far away from each other. Great area.

The staff were very friendly and helpful but thats about the only good news. Half of the park is under water and closed leaving the campsites that are near water without normal trail access. The ONLY campsite with a trail to the water (site 58) has very little shade and the picnic table is not covered. We also ran into more than one close call with turantulas and scorpions we had no idea existed in the park. It would have been nice to have been warned about this in advance.

Had a fun day at this state park! The drive was awesome and we absolutely loved all of the trails Dorba medium and Penn Farm - we went on 3 of them.Suggestions: Book in advance online as the park has limited capacity because of covid. Check out the trail map on the website and decide what trail you would like to go. The terrain for Dorba 8 and 12 mile is difficult so plan accordingly, all others are easy to moderate and not too long. Carry enough water to keep yourself hydrated, specially for the longer trails. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes. You would enjoy a lot of flora and landscapes but not much fauna, so I would say it is safe.Restrooms are ok! Don’t expect a lot.It is an amazing way to spend a fun day with friends and/or family.

Review №19

The park is OK. Not great, but not bad. It will be better once they get all the construction done and open everything back up.One problem is that they close all the hike/bike trails if theres even a hint of moisture, and they leave them closed for 3 days. I know there are problems with rutting, etc. but this goes well beyond that. The vast majority of the time the trails could have been opened at least a day earlier after rain/dew/fog. They seem to prefer to have them closed as the default. Also it would be nice if they would update the phone recording the night before instead of waiting until the day of re-opening to say the trails are open, especially now that you have to have reservations. They know very well that theres going to be no rain and that theyre going to open the trails the next morning - they should put that in the recording the evening before. The trails themselves are ok - again not great, but not bad. If youve done any serious hiking you wont find them at all challenging, but the DORBA trail is well maintained and well marked, and good for getting in some miles. If you need elevation changes for your hiking workout go to Cedar Ridge instead, but be aware its much more crowded (because its free). Bikes are supposed to yield, but most dont so just be ready to hop off the trail and let them pass. No big deal, its better for them to not lose momentum anyway and most riders say thanks.

This is a great mtb trail.. I am a 60 yrs old novice mtb rider. I just started riding last October... I only did the 3 mile loop then... Today I rode the entire 12 mile loop. So I will tell you about it. The first couple of miles are some of the hardest... Its a great mix of uphill climbs followed predictably by nice down hills rolls... Around the 5 mile mark you choose between the 8 and the 12 mile loop. If you take the 12 it gets kinda of tough for a mile or so.. but then it gets very rideable.. And some of the most fun parts come up.. So if you are in decent shape you can handle the whole 12 mile loop.

Park is great, roads could use some work. My campsite was really good. Lots of shade, pretty level and clean. The RV dumps are really good also. Two vehicles can dump at a time. Most campsites have full hook ups. I will be going again. Oh, we did not use the lake due to high water levels from so much rain.

ra
Review №38

An okay state park. Very steep, hilly roadways which made bike riding difficult. Big park, and plenty of 50/30 amp service. But a huge percentage of the sites would not accommodate anything longer than a pop-up tent camper. Most sites required extensive leveling adjustments. Careful backing your rig in because quite a few had 12+ inch drop-off if your trailer wheels left the pavement. Just be careful. Not much in the way of shoreline access. Good news, its really close to Dallas if that means anything to you.

The lady at the booth says I will give you 30 minutes to find what you want so we go over to this area and found 2 right away but we have like a top 5 list. Anyway after spending an hour driving looking sitting walking we narrowed it down to 2 we get back to the guy before the booth which tells us 1 thru 21 is closed, find another. Well, everything is reserved, but we found something til Friday morning. Anyway driving around today one of the spots in our top 2 was taken. I really love the hiking trails at this park. I would make sure to call ahead of time though to see if theyre even open, because they close when it rains. I didnt know this and my husband and I drove about 30 minutes after paying and making online reservations , just to realize that all the trails were closed. We explained the situation to a manager but were not reimbursed because she said we had already entered the park. This was really disappointing since that was the whole point of our trip. She said to always ask before you enter the park because they will do rain checks on reservations. I wish they would state this on the website.

Beautiful place to spend the day or have professional photos taken. There are several different areas to explore. Call ahead to ensure all rec areas are open, as the water levels occasionally impact the beach. The walking path to the farm is wide and very level(see photo), guests of all ages can enjoy the little shaded pathway.

If you like launching your wakeboard boat in super shallow water this is the place for you. As an added bonus there are lots of people constantly paddling kayaks around the boat ramps so you have to wait to pull off your trailer until the kayaking morons are done zipping back and forth behind your trailer. When it was time to load up there were a bunch of people swimming around the boat docks. This is probably a Great Lake for someone without a boat but it’s not for me.

I remember in the 80s when TX was flush with oil money & these state parks were some of the best in the nation. Now they seem to be running on a shoestring. All the Rangers are extremely nice but the facilities are run down. Not a bad place; huge, actually. But much of it is closed due to reconstruction. Came for a little hiking as a family. Its a small park but really beautiful. Most of the place was closed for construction, but not the places marked on the map we were given. It was very confusing. Many of the trails marked werent even completed yet, which we discovered after we tried to hike a loop and met a sign telling us to turn around after about twenty minutes of walking. It would have been helpful to be provided accurate information when we entered the park, or at least to have some signage at the main gate. After our hike, we wanted to find a place to picnic. Everywhere we tried to go was closed, so we ended up in the camping grounds. They were empty, so we used a picnic bench, walked to the waterfront, and called it a day.Upon arrival home we discovered our son had left his backpack. We called the ranger office to see if anyone might be available or already in the area to pick it up. Nobody was, which we understood. But then he made sure to tell us we were not allowed to be in the camping area, it was for campers only, and there were signs posted saying such. We read every sign we came across to try and discern where we might be able to park and picnic, and wherever these signs were, they were not visible from the road.In a nutshell, the park is a mess right now. Might be better in a year, but we wont be going back to find out.
