Lots of history with displays changing month to month as things in storage are brought out at the main museum. The sheriffs jail was very unique in design with living quarters separated from cells above. The third and fourth floor are inaccessible due to structural issues. And there is mention of a basement but did not see that either. The castle like jail was built with thick walls to support the metal cells and concrete floors above.
Clearly a labor of love by its pleasant and devoted staff, the museum and adjacent jail have a fascinating collection of local historical items that show the history of Brownwood and surrounding region. Very much a trip back in time to small town America. Well worth a visit!
I loved the museum experience so much, I went to work there! As an employee and as a volunteer, I can say that I have combed through every inch of this place, and still find new treasures to behold. There is so much to the history of Brown County that really reflects the history of Texas and of the world across the past 200 years. Its a great place for history buffs and those native to Brownwood, but anyone will enjoy this place! The Kidz Zone is highly loved by children from all over the state. They love the interactive exhibits and especially the old phone switchboard. You cant beat the price for a day worth of learning & fun!
The tour guide was fantastic.
