This battlefield is awesome! It has a walking trail, information sites (posted on wood panels like other parks), a small wooden bridge, a large canon on the trail, and plenty of space to take photos. It is a prairie, so expect lots of sun and almost no shade on a hot day. There is tall grass and signs to avoid possible snakes in the fields. There are flags in the fields marking where the battle lines wouldve been at the beginning of the battle. Lots of info here on markers. You can call a local phone number and dial a code to hear what the info on the markers has written on it (I guess for those who would rather hear someone read it aloud). The info sites are spaced out quite a bit on the trail, so its a bit of a walk. It is all paved sidewalk, so no mud or debris. There is also a visitors building with restrooms and a park employee there if needed. Very interesting for those who love history or to take your kids for learning about the history of the RGV. This battle marked the beginning of the US-Mexican war. Pretty impressive park for our family!!

I had no idea how significant this event had in our American history. This was hugely more important than The Alamo. Sequentially after The Alamo this event secured all of the west states and quite frankly initiated the discussion of slavery and ultimately lead to the Civil War. Wow, the trails are concrete and quite accessible. Both lines of battle are marked with flags. There is a section of the old Port Isabel road, from that era, that was the point of access that the US forces were traveling and the Mexican army was blocking. Very cool and well documented.

Very interesting! Winds at 30 mph did not help but the history is really great. Highly recommended. Stay on the walkway. Huge rattlesnakes help cut down on the rabbit infestation. Helps to understand how and why Texas was so instrumental in expanding the US to the Pacific.

The visitors center is small but there are a few interactive exhibits. I learned a lot about the battle and the video was very helpful. The best part is the walking trail. Bring your walking shoes because it is a lot larger than it seems. The gift shop has some interesting books and I look forward to visiting again. The flags mark the line between U.S. and Mexican battle forces.

History at the tip of Texas. Its must be over 5 yrs since we last visited this park and to be honest this place has change quite a bit. We went for a walk with our dog and it was a very quiet and pleasant one. We went on a Sunday afternoon and the day was cloudy with a nice cool breeze. Summer can be a scorcher so if you visit in summer I would advise anybody to visit in late afternoon and dont forget to take plenty of water and sun block. This park is full of history so dont forget to take your camera or phone to take pictures. The park is free of charge and if you visit Im sure you are going to like this nice and pleasant atmosphere. I give this place a two thumbs up for it was worth the visit.

My husband and I are big history buffs so we enjoyed the visit and we love the National Park Service as theyre usually helpful and enjoy educating folks.

I wasnt aware that this was here and we were killing some time before checking into our hotel in South Padre. We stopped in the visitors center (which had much needed air conditioning on a hot June day) and learned all about the battle. There is a free 15 minute video to watch on the battle as well as some artifacts from the battle along with a small gift shop. After touring the visitors center we went out to the battlefield. I cant imagine fighting a battle on this terrain in May, it wouldve been hot and there are prickly pear cacti everywhere! It has a nice paved path to a lookout where you can read/see the lines of the Mexican and American forces. Great learning opportunity!

Watch the video! It helps you understand how integral this battle was to the expansion of the US in the mid-1800’s. The museum itself is small but informative. The pathways outside look newly paved. The grounds are well-kept. The ranger on duty was full of information, too. And the price of admission fits every budget—free!

Visited with my family in May during a weekend of reenactments and displays. Thoroughly satisfying even if you are not a history buff. Period correct costumes, firearm demonstrations, and horsemanship make for an exciting display of living history. The visitors center has more than ample air conditioning for those that cant tolerate the Texas heat for very long and need to refresh themselves. A gift shop in the visitors center has mementos at varying price points. A jewel on the south Texas plain.

Walk back in time when you walk out on the battlefield. A battle fought and won by brave men in a formidable habitat that included many perils of its own. What it must have been like as cannon balls, smoke, and fire filled the air. Really enjoyed this walk and the flags marking the battle lines. The cannons were an excellent touch. Their authenticity lended much to the portrayal of the events as they actually occurred.

Saw the Cannons used in this battle embedded in a wall at West Point, New York. I could never understand how it was that the History Books say that U.S. “Invaded Mexico.”This battle of Palo Alto Proves beyond any doubt that is not correct. Mysteriously, if one looks at a Map, one can easily see that Palo Alto is about 14 miles North of Brownsville, Texas which in turn was and is on the North Side of the Rio Grande River the de facto Border with the U.S. and Mexico. So if the Mexican Army was on our side of the Border in the Battle of Palo Alto, how can the History Books say the U.S. Invaded Mexico to start the war?Furthermore, The Mexicans had invaded San Antonio Twice before this battle and were defeated both times.
