Pure majesty awaits you if you make the 3.5 hour drive southeast from LA to the Algodones Dunes Wilderness. This vast expanse is the largest of its kind in California and provides unparalleled opportunity for adventure. Its otherworldly landscape may even transport you to another planet, literally, as the Algodones Dunes were featured in Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi as the backdrop for the infamous Sarlacc pit. The massive dune complex is bisected by highway 78 with the Algodones Dunes Wilderness Area itself to the North and the Imperial Dunes OHV recreation zone to the south. Hikers, photographers, and conservationists will likely want to stick to the north side, as the southern side is rutted, heavily trafficked by off-road vehicles, and contains little vegetation or wildlife. If youre visiting with your ATV, Jeep, or other OHV, then the southern side (Imperial Dunes OHV Site) is definitely the place for you! Either way, you cant go wrong with a trip to the Algondones Dunes.

This place is absolutely stunning! If youre in the area its a must go! If you come prepared with off road vehicle it will be the time of your life! We were in a station wagon so we didnt off road, but the scenary was amazingly beautiful! Go for sunset! I think you need to get a permit to drive on dunes legally.

The nature refuge side of the dunes. There is NO off-roading allowed. Instead, there are a lot of plants and animals uniquely adapted to dune life that are fun to check out. The areas on the edges outside the dunes are interesting too.

Next trip here, soon. I like to go there when it is NOT desert season, when the dunes are undisturbed. What a breath taking beauty.

Incredible Place I Didnt Even Know Existed!Driving through the Sonoran Desert on our way to San Diego, we suddenly spotted some mountains off in the distance that appeared to have a strange yellow coloration. The closer we got, the stranger they looked. Eventually we realized they werent mountains but rather huge sand dunes. Once we finally reached them, we felt like we were on an entirely different planet. The Imperial Sand Dunes are incredibly cool and certainly something that you have to experience to believe

Well maintained and lots of fun. Lots of people and awesome machines on big weekends. Police keep things in check for the most part. Be careful people dont always pay attention out here.

Obviously not the place to go in the summer unless you can handle the heat of the sand and the wind. Which I was good with, I thought it was cool to run through as a quick workout and stop from a long drive. But wanted to see it, so was on my list..

North of the 78, it is designated wilderness and OHV are not permitted. The dunes are untouched and peaceful and you can run around them with wild abandon. South of the 78, it is a nonstop OHV party with tons of adrenaline. You pick your poison. North of the 78, there are very few people and no one ever came to check for our vehicle permits. The road is pretty rough and although passable by regular cars, a few of my friends did get stuck in the sand and some nice people in dune buggies and trucks had to help them out.

We dont mind making the long trip from Idaho to meet with family and visit the So-cal dunes. The weather is much warmer in February in this area, we leave the ski jackets behind and get out the flip flops.

This area needs 24/7 EMS for the density of visitors. The seriously injured risk delayed treatment due to emergency resource staging and the distance to a community hospital (which should be a regional Trauma Center).
