A fun little aviation museum with some fantastic planes, but curation could be a bit better.I came here when I was in grade school, and it was this small little museum in the corner of a hanger. Now, several decades later, it’s a proper museum with great exhibits. They’ve got a general history of aviation wing and a military history wing, and both are really well done. They even have one of the original Delta Air Lines crop dusters (did you know Delta got started as a crop dusting service that carried the odd passenger for extra revenue? I didn’t!) They even have a SR-71 blackbird in a nearby exhibit you can drive past. The frustrating part was because they had neat things, when there wasn’t much information on the plane or why it was there, it was disappointing. I wanted to learn more! I think they’re in the process of updating things, so hopefully that’ll be better next time I come by.

Our first thought was that it was a bit small, but wow they fit a lot in there. They have a vast collection and staff that is friendly and knowledgeable. The kids were excited that they even got to go in a couple! We had a great time checking out the plains and exhibits at the museum of flight. But what made our trip amazing was Charlie, he came around and showed the kids the planes and gave them the history and stories of them all. What a great way to spend our afternoon. Thank you Charlie!

Went here as a kid it was awesome to see all of the airplanes and go in side of them. Great place for little kids. Great place for people fascinated with aviation. There is a lot of history here. There are almost 100 different aircrafts here. But they also have things liable engines, models, artifacts, and pictures.

If you buy a membership to this museum, you can get into the Huntsville space center for free. This was a cool 1.5 hours spend showing my kids the history of flight. They loved the flight simulators and they hands-on exhibits. They represented the history of African-American aviation well and the history of females involvement, too.

It was a wonderful visit. Especially hearing the knowledge from Charlie. The last time I was at the museum was when our children were in their teens. They are both now in their late 40s. It was amazing to see how much history that was there and how large it is. Heard you are moving soon and will look forward to going there to see everything at your new location.

I love all their is to do with flight. We got there just a little earlier and not realizing it had come up close to the airport down the street were this museum has some planes stored and had parked and walked around looking at the planes. The lady told us when we come in that those are part of the museum and you could park and walked around outside the gates looking at them which is what we did. They also have several planes inside the museum that were pretty cool and they also had simulators for trying to fly a couple different planes. They had regular planes and a some military planes and I was just in love with the whole thing. If in the area I would totally say go check it out.

Absolutely loved the content of this museum. However the entire experience was RUINED after the rude woman at the counter closed the gift shop over a half hour before it was supposed to be closed, according to the sign. Preventing us from picking up some items we wanted, to mark our adventure at the museum. The woman told me that the museum closes at 4:30, and the gift shop closes at 3:30, according to a HUGE sign listed above the gift shop entry. But low and behold, at 2:58 the gift shop lights were off, and when I asked the woman why it was closed, she IGNORED me and simply walked out of the building. So my suspicion is that SHE wanted to leave work early, at the PAYING CUSTOMERS expense. That one single individual has ruined the experience for me and my 6 friends who might have made a return trip, however, not anymore. She is solely responsible for the museum losing a great deal of business. Absolutely disgusting behavior and attitude. We won’t be back, and neither should she, in our opinion.

Excellent and very well maintained aviation museum. We live outside Washington DC and are very familiar with the two Smithsonian Air and Space museums and as a former Air Force aviator, we have been to the Air Force museum in Dayton. While these constitute the upper echelon of aviation museum, this one certainly belongs in the next level and should be a destination for any aviation enthusiast. We visited with our family that includes multiple current Air Force pilots and found that active military and their families are free. We were there several hours and still didnt have time to tour the outside aircraft. Multiple well maintained flight simulators were free. There collection of intelligence aviation art and the stories associated with those missions is the best I have seen anywhere. The same applies to their collection of kit built aircraft. Havent seen an equivalent collection in the more than 20 aviation museums I have visited. Definitely add this to your must see list for Birmingham.

This place is 50 years old. Ive lived in Birmingham for 45 years and this is my first visit. Too bad, this place is worth visiting. The only downside is that it is in a bit of a sketchy party of town.

They had flight simulators that were really fun for the adults and so much cool exhibits ranging from the beginning of mechanical aviation to modern day. I was really impressed with the massive Russian attack helicopter and the interactive exhibits. Also it was free for military (or maybe discounted I cant remember). Not the biggest or best, but a VERY good, small museum that theyve put a lot of work into and is definitely worth a stop. Absolutely GREAT museum for smaller children (the play room looked super cool), a few cockpits to climb in, even little computer simulators to fly (very well done and easy enough to figure out). This place needs a large donor to hook them up with a MUCH larger building to fulfill dreams you can see that they want to fulfill. They really have a lot packed into this place.Wish it had more Alabama-specific flight history in terms of maps, pics, dioramas, but theyve covered the basics pretty well.Wish you could get up close to or into the Hind! For people new to or passing through Alabama:Dont miss the Space and Rocket center in Huntsville, the small but vivid Tuskegee Airmen museum at Moton Field, Tuskegee, the Army Aviation Museum at Fort Rucker (plan time to get a base pass at the Daleville gate), and the USS Alabama Battleship museum in Mobile.

We had a wonderful time. The set up from military, wars, to general aviation was very well done. We were impressed. I would suggest this place to anyone of all ages and even if you dont have ties to the military (such as active duty or family in military) They have detailed descriptions of each plane or helo. They also have a few sims that you can sit in and fly. I got stuck in one and my son kept saying come on mom, lets go see something else! I was having fun. The staff was helpful and very friendly. My son is in Rotc and he said he had a good time. So I would go on his having a good time as a good recommendation by itself.Check out their website for the camps they have and field trips for schools. They looked worth it as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed sitting inside several cockpits as well. Although the area may seem run down, the museum is extremely personal and up close. After the visit, I highly recommend driving by the airport because there are additional static displays of both civil and military aircraft including an SR71!!They were nice enough to allow me to have lunch with them and all the volunteers during my visit. They are like a family. This was also around Christmas time as well. I had the honor of meeting several retired and active pilots including the b-29 pilot of the CAF FIFI.
