A wonderful museum in downtown Birmingham with easy street parking, free entry, and a lot of different pieces of artwork from a wide range of time periods. Loved the variety in European, Asian, and African artwork. I wish they had artwork from Latin America, but honestly there was way more art than I initially expected!

Absolutely a must-do for tourists. If you’re going with kids, here is what you need to know:The museum is free. I recommend bringing a dollar or two for the donation box in the foyer though. The washrooms and drinking fountains are close to the entrance of the museum. They also have small storage lockers near the washrooms for you to store belongings. They do not allow bottled water in the galleries. They will ask you to leave your water bottle at the front with security. They have portable, lightweight stools available. I do recommend taking one if you are not used to standing or walking for long periods of time. Having a stool available for a seven-year-old who is starting to get crabby while you look at grown-up art is helpful too.BRING SNACKS. But only eat them in the Art Garden. I cannot stress enough how necessary the snacks are.The kids’ interactive area is wonderful. They have two separate rooms, one for younger children and the other for older children. My kids had a great time learning about pottery, still life paintings, and Chinese brush painting.Everyone we interacted with at the gallery was pleasant, professional, and were happy to have children there.Highly recommended as a high quality trip for low/no cost.

My wife and I enjoyed a date to the museum. The special exhibit Redline was sobering—drawing attention to the continuing impact of a decades old policy. Enjoyed seeing art by some of our favorite artists as well as iconic pieces that we were delighted to see “in person” so to speak. Didn’t have a chance to eat there but look forward to the idea of a dinner date.

This was a pretty nice place to visit. I wish there was more though. I think more paintings would be really cool, as well as a section on Egypt! There were A LOT of pottery items and little knickknacks that didnt interest me personally, but it was still cool to see. It wasnt very busy so I think Sundays are a good time to go to avoid crowds.

Took the drive into Birmingham to the Art Museum. It was a lovely collection. A lot of the museum reminded me of the Carlos Museum at Emory in Atlanta. They both have good representationsof Asian, African and native art as week as the usual Egyptian artifacts, European and American art. It was a good trip if you love art. My traveling companion does, so she really enjoyed it.

It was merely okay. The whole 1st floor was all white people art and stuff and then they crammed Asian, African, and Native American culture all into the 2nd floor. Barbie got an ENTIRE room, while they only could do small little rooms for the “minorities”. Not to mention most of the plaques in the Native American section (which I was looking forward to but was highly disappointed) said “either (tribe) or (tribe)”. Like you aren’t sure which tribe the artifact is from? Anyways didn’t go to anything else other than the first and second floor, after seeing how they crammed all other races/cultures into one floor while white culture got an entire one to themselves, I wasn’t impressed.

I couldnt possibly do justice in a short review for Birminghams world class Museum of Art . I am honestly not quite sure just how many other major museums across our country are also FREE to enter, & explore every exhibit until you are satisfied, but I comfortably venture to say its most likely NOT MANY. I feel so very blessed & lucky to live in a great city whos treasured works of art are displayed freely open for all to access. And I hope it will ALWAYS remain so.

If you are less familiar with Eastern art and myths, the museum has audio guides and informative panels with a bit more depth than artist, dating, and location. They offer tours in Spanish and have a great exploration area for kids. Bring a quarter for a locker or practice puppy dog eyes to borrow one from a fellow patron.

I recently visited the museum to look at the Barbie exhibit. It wasnt what I was expecting because it only showed what looked like living room settings through out the decades. I was expecting Barbie through the decades and how she has changed. I notice that Barbie had a large room and will be shown through some of 2020 as well. I was told by one of the staff that the museum is planning and exhibit for indigenous people in detail for about 3 rooms I believe. I am disappointed that the museum in my years of living and growing up in Birmingham, Alabama. I have never seen that much work or effort put into the details of black history connecting African history. The museum seems to actively represent other cultures over one culture (being African American, black, and African culture). African have a deep rooted history in the state of Alabama but it seems that our culture has been almost excluded in the Birmingham art museum. In speaking to one of your workers I asked if there would be anything in depth for black history month in February to June which is black music month and I was told that the museum only does the bare minimum. Which broke my heart since I am a lover of the arts. The museum as so many galleries inside to exhibit things from other countries, Christian religion and the way the white people live in the Victorian Era but I cannot go there to learn anything of my own culture but can learn almost everything about everyone else culture through the years in detail. The Birmingham art museum needs to do better in its black balling of African American culture first before giving an entire room to a doll.

I visit this museum quite often, lately I noticed the security following me around the whole building. I walk down the corridor and could hear the staff / security speaking to other people (White) but as I walk by, they stare at me as if I wasnt supposed to be there. I dont know if this is due to cultural conditioning, or other underlying issues. I do know that major changes need to be made regarding the subjective treatment of Black people.

We thoroughly enjoyed a couple of hours here before “Museum fatigue” took over - there’s too much to see in one visit. The friendly staff were really keen to engage and highlight some of the key things to look out for, which added to the experience. I’m not sure that enough is always made of some of the greatest exhibits, and the interpretation is rather flat. It feels as if it could benefit from an injection of life and extra creativity, but it’s a great place overall - especially as it’s free of charge.
