This is a truly magical bridge. Not only will it get you from one side of the river to the other, but at the same time, it will take you from one state to another. Truly amazing.

Came here to deliver a letter Lucy West wrote to her brother and just as I get to the top of the bridge, Evan King nearly blows my leg off with a grenade! Talk about an itchy trigger finger. Residents seemed to be cheery as usual as the Family had been giving them trouble the previous couple nights.

Although the bridge is old it would HELP if people realized theres an upgrade thus press the gas pedal to maintain speed. They teach throttle control in the motorcycle safety course. Maybe they should do the same for cars/trucks.

I havent a clue why Google Maps deems it valuable to ask me to review a frickin bridge, but here goes. I hate this bridge. Hate. H - A - T - E . I dont have anything against Virginia; some of my favorite relatives live on the other side of the river. But anytime I come back from visiting them, I end up suffering backups to cross this bridge. Why do NB drivers slow down immediately after crossing the American Legion bridge? Do their cars have a hard time getting back up to 55 on the mild but long incline following the bridge? Do their ankles get tired? Are they just trying to be empathetic to their cars? Maybe just used to going slow after the 15 or maybe 50 minute backup they experienced on the way to the bridge? Now, Im actually glad that the application prevents me from going lower than one star for this review, because after all, a bridge is handy when one does not own a boat or enjoy non-recreational swimming. You are a solid one star based on that criteria and nobody can take that away from you, American Legion bridge.

Why do they put the Welcome to Maryland sign after you cross the bridge into Maryland. The Potomac River in this area technically belongs in Maryland, not Virginia, so the sign needs to be just before you get on the bridge, not after. Oh by the way, this bridge and the Beltway in Maryland needs to widened to 12 lanes.

Need a secondary bridge for the connection between Northern VA and Montgomery county. Traffic is too heavy and rush hour is lasting 5-6 hours for AM & PM.

Poorly designed bridge. Back ups largely due to drivers riding their brakes down hill and slow to accelerate up hill. EVERY TIME

Worst chokepoint in the DC metro area. The ICC in Maryland should have been extended from Gaithersburg, MD to connect with VA-28 in Sterling, VA over the Potomac five years ago when it was built. The American Legion bridge has worse traffic than the Verrazano Narrows bridge in NYC!

Is an infamous rush hour chokepoint, but is that really the bridges fault?

Review №25

OMG!! This horror should be destroyed YESTERDAY and replaced with a design commensurate with the usage demands now and for 50 more years!Try multi levels to start, like major bridges in other metro areas (NYC, San Francisco, etc.).As this area is not even considered “earthquake prone”, there is utterly no excuse for this pitifully inadequate structure. Absolutely pathetic.

People giving this bridge 3-4 stars must strictly be talking about aesthetics, because it is quite possibly the worst section of the entire Beltway to navigate by car. The combination of downward-sloping geography heading towards the bridge, five-lane curved highways, and a constant high volume of cars & trucks creates a recipe for some of the worst traffic congestion in the whole region. Not fun.

As it is the only bridge on this side of MD, we do not have much choice on how to cross the river. But it is always backed up with traffic - ALWAYS! Make sure you add 10 minutes of time to your travels if you have to cross this bridge

This is a third-world type of bridge, just good enough for a midsize town, not the capital of the Greatest Country on Earth. The traffic is horrible and you will be always stuck in a jam between 7 am to 7 p.m. during the week. The sidewall on the bridge is in state of disrepair. This construction of more than half a century ago, is awaiting the faith of Mississippi River bridge, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We should not count on it to be replaced anytime soon as the beltway elite doesn’t need to pass over it.The only positive aspect driving there, is that the 18-Wheelers and tankers passing by, will increase your chance of going to heaven and meeting the Almighty.Bellow, there is a movie clip of the fractured joint:
