Oh my goodness. What a beautiful Southern town, located on the Beaufort River. Not far from the Atlantic. Wonderful waterfront and lots of restaurants overlooking the water. Suggest taking one of the tours to get the feel of the area. Take time to stroll the streets observing the mansions with beautifully landscaped gardens and oaks dripping with Spanish moss. Smaller and homier than Charleston and Savannah. Was not able to see everything in one day. Will be back. With close proximity to Parris Island, saw handful of fighter jets flyover.

What a perfect little town! I took the Southern Rose Carriage Tour narrated by a gentleman that was extremely informative. If you shop the stores look twice before you purchase. I paid $22.00 dollars for a Christmas ornament, walked two doors down and found another christmas shop that had a much better variety with half the price!

I cannot be emphatic enough about Beaufort Historic District. Result of organised urban planning, the historic district revolved around three huge cemeteries, and adjacent churches. The neuralgic point is church street, which links the military cemetery to the coast line. Venture on the east side of the district to see beautiful old typically-american houses (porch, stairs, flag, rocking chairs, flowers). Some are made of stone and are little castles. The coastline is beautiful, with several restaurants and coffees along the water. I had the chance to discuss with locals and transplants, and all praised the quality of life, good weather, and human connections you can build on Beaufort. Beaufort has/had a proud and prominent role in several wars, and the nearby military base hugely impacted the life of Beaufort, with army members regularly wandering through Beaufort.

A mini Charleston, every bit as beautiful, just not so crowded, and the food there rivals the best in the region.

We took a carriage tour around the downtown historic district. Our driver was knowledgeable and kept us amused with her anecdotes. Definitely worth your time. We also took a boat tour which was also interesting and included some historic tidbits.
