The 5 stars is based on the track. Its just an awesome public course. The drive is worth it, no question. Only ding could give them, is the lack of gps for yardage and not having any Baileys to add to my Jamo and coffee... 5 stars well earned.
This is the best public golf course in IL. Great layout with holes that make sense from the standpoint that it tests your total game. Some holes are ones that you have to score on to take advantage of the round (example would be #7 which I have eagled about 1-2 times a year with a drive on the correct part of the fairway to get max distance). Then you have holes designed to grip it & rip it, target holes where you need to hit to certain spots, and holes that you just try to hang on (#9/#16/#18). By the time you are finished, you have probably used every club in your bag - it is not a Driver/9 iron or Wedge type of course. Great greens when they are cut to the necessary speed - hitting the wrong part of it can cause 3 putts. I played here for years on a permanent time and when my kids started to get into sports, I had to stop in order to coach them. I really missed this place every week. For course of this caliber, it is priced fair and is worth the ride. If I could only play one course for the rest of my life, Thunderhawk is it and this is saying alot with Sheperds Crook right down the street.
Beautiful course, lots of great holes. Staff was great. Practice area is a little limited and away from first tee, but sufficient.
The course is absolutely beautiful and a great track. That said, we played last Friday at 2:50pm. Started right on time but by the 5th hole we were backed up and it progressively got worse. By the time we got to the 10th, we were waiting 10-12 minutes to tee off. The front 9 took almost 3 hours. We ended up jumping back on the front 9 to play 2 through 9 again.. We saw one ranger who said he would speed things up. He disappeared. When we complained the gentleman at the front desk, who was very nice, said the problem was so many golfers with different abilities. That is not an excuse to speed things along. Do not let average to below average golfers tee up from the tips which is very hard on this course. He did offer to lets us play another 9 but at 7:40pm it was not worth it. No other offer for our troubles. Lastly, we saw one beverage cart on a day that was in the 90s and humid. That is just lost revenue for them. I would play this course again because of the beauty and condition but not if they do not change things.
I love this course but why havent they cut the greens over the last couple months. Way too slow for this quality of course - even tee boxes a bit shaggy. In April and May the course was perfect! I played two days ago and two weeks ago and they were too slow. I guess Ill go back to Shepards Crook until I hear the greens are better
Beautiful golf course. Vistas are outstanding. The course is in perfect shape. Better bring your A game. Very difficult course.

This course did not disappoint. Absolutely beautiful and well maintained. I wish the bar had a better selection of scotch though, all they had was dewars (meh). I have wanted to golf here for a couple years but its so far out of the way but it was worth it. Definitely a players course, challenging in the right areas but not too difficult.
Talk about a fairy tale wedding. My husband and I had our ceremony and reception at Thunderhawk. They have amazing food, professional and friendly staff, beautiful scenery, and reasonable prices. As soon as we walked in for a meeting with Jody to look at the venue I knew we didnt need to look anywhere else. All the staff was amazing and contributed in making our day so special. Any requests you have or different visions, they will do all they can to make it happen. I made flowers for my bridesmaids and they unfortunately got misplaced. About an hour before our ceremony started Anne went out and got real flowers and put them together for my girls and saved the day. They really did a beautiful job with everything. Even though the day flew by it truly was magically and everything a bride and groom would want for their wedding day. I cant thank them enough for helping us start our marriage off with a bang. Truly special! Thank you so much!
Beautiful public course. About an hour drive from downtown without traffic, but well worth it.

Thunderhawk Golf Course. I cannot comment on the golf course as I unfortunately do not golf. However I did attend a wedding there and it was a great place. The room and atmosphere there was very very nice. The bartenders and wait staff for absolutely attentive polite and did their job very well. The food was fabulous. I was very impressed by everything about this place

My favorite place to golf the fairways and greens are well maintained. Also the food in the clubhouse is good and there pro shop is also nice. I like to say this best golf course in lake county in my opinion.

Excellent facility with beautiful scenery. Course conditioning was excellent. Friendly staff in pro shop and on course. Female bartender was very rude! She acted like it was a bother to do her job and serve our drinks. She was extremely sarcastic when we asked about selections on tap. She should not be working in customer service. I probably would have rated the facility 5 stars if not for her rude service.

Thunderhawk is the best courses I have played at in the Chicagoland area. The course was very challenging but well worth the trip as the course was beautiful. I recommend to come here if you are looking for one of the best courses in Illinois.
ThunderHawk is without question, one of the best golf courses in the Chicagoland area. If we are doing a top ten list of Chicago golf, ThunderHawk MUST be included. Excellent condition, great staff, nice carts. All good!!
Small and inconvenient location of the bar but pretty for a wedding.
Attended my sons wedding there. The staff was great and the food was amazing. I highly recommend ThunderHawk. Unfortunately I was a little preoccupied so was not able to enjoy the links but from the clubhouse the greens and fairway looked really good and quite enticing!

Really a beautiful course; great scenery. Im not a good golfer, and this course makes you pay for all your mistakes (and I made a lot of them). I need to up my game before returning, but if youre a good golfer, I highly recommend this course. Lake County Forest Preserve does an excellent job with this.
Incredible golf course just 55 miles from Milwaukee. Great shape great greens. The greens were quick but rolled true. The round was 4 hours and 15 minutes even though it was booked. Unbelievable holes, we felt we were up north golfing. Will play several times a year.

Had our Christmas party there. This was the 2nd time coming here for the party. Great food both times. Staff was attwntative and the place is warm and friendly. Pleasant atmosphere.

This is a very nice course. It was in great shape. It is a challenging course. If you like bird watching, bring your bird book. This is also and Audubon sanctuary.
What a beautiful golf course, one of the best in Northern IL. Extremely challenging for the average golfer though so be ready to lose some golf balls if you arent a scratch golfer. Facilities are some of the best and staff was super friendly.

Extremely disappointing is a very generous way to describe this golf course, which is very unfortunate because its considered a top course in Illinois. But the course value is no where near the price it cost to play. Furthermore, the people who run this place are about as worthless and unhelpful as they get. Trust me, Illinois has MANY other courses that are far nicer and far less expensive.

Course is great,fairway, green , bunker everything was great even though it was raining a lot.A little hard for beginners and you got to know the course, at least take a look at the map in the score card.Customer service sucks. We started playing at 10 am and went to club house to have a bit but the lady behind the counter told us that no food was available, just cookies and drinks. So I asked the guy in the pro shop if I could go out and bring some food then start the back half, he asked the chubby manager in the office and said okay. It was still pouring rain so nobody was playing behind us anyway. So I bring the food and ask the lady behind the counter(the same lady that said there was not hot food) if we could use the table to eat, she said it was okay.While we were eating, a blonde white woman comes and start barking why we were eating outside food instead of their food. I told her what the other lady said, she just kept quiet, no apologies.

This is a spectacular layout and one of the true gems in the Chicagoland area. Its probably not a great course for beginners, but the scenery is gorgeous.

The course is laid out well but they do not maintain it like they used to. Tee boxes and greens are torn up. Pace of play is terrible, they bunch people up on the first tee, their rangers are the real problem, forcing people to tee off even if their tee time isnt up yet then doing nothing about slow play on the course which is inevitable. Ive played my last round here...
I like the layout. Greens were marked up pretty bad. Over priced for the shape its in.
It should be 4.5 stars. My only concern is that the online price used to include cart. When I got there they informed me that I owe more for powered cart.
