We bring our PreK/K classes yearly and it is absolutely the best experience. There is so much history in one place. The scholars are fascinated by all the displays and ask lots of questions. It is by far the best museum to learn a tremendous amount of Louisiana history in one place.

Two floors museum. First floor - history of Louisiana from French time to the modern and exposition covering whole economic diversity of the state and the second floor is abundant presence of the different cultural phenomenas of Louisiana. Different regions, different aspects: from voodoo culture and jazz funeral to Mardi Gras and different variety of music.Sorry for many words, but the place is amazing, must see.

My boyfriend and I visited the museum on a Thursday which gave us ample time to linger at each exhibit and just relish the history and time we spent learning about this great state. We have been here for two n half years working and travel nationwide but absolutely love the rich history of Louisiana. If you have a chance take the time to stand still and learn.

Really cool place to visit. There was a lot of information on Louisiana from the foundation of the state to the music and the impact the state has as a whole. I was blown away seeing the artifacts from Louis Armstrong, amazing to see history that up close and personal. The most amazing part was seeing the hearse that carried Dr. King. I stood there for at least 5 minutes just in awe at how close I was to someone so important to our history. A truly humbling experience, and that is an understatement as I really dont have words to describe the power I felt there.

$6 admission. Plan on 2 hours. Great Civil War section. Museum is The history of Louisiana oriented in a progressive manner: Spanish, British, French, Confederate, to U.S., Agriculture, Marti Gras, etc.. High quantity displays and many original artifacts. However: bring earplugs - many loud displays - you hear 2 or 3 simultaneously while reading unrelated signs, and be advised that on weekdays elementary school field trips - 500 unrestrained, unsupervised, undisciplined, very vocal children - who are not as interested in museums as those of us who paid - will be running around and yelling.

A fine museum celebrating the history and culture of Louisiana. A few of the highlights include a complete shrimp fishing boat, a Civil War era submarine, and a mock-up of Cosimo Matassas recording studio with original equipment. Matassas studio recorded many early artists who helped launch rock and roll - Fats Domino, Allen Tousaint, Little Richard, Lee Dorsey, and many others.

This museum was awesome!!! So super proud of my Louisiana heritage. Here the past and present collide into a beautiful collection from all areas of our great state. I could have stayed here for hours but we were on a time crunch and with a group. My 11 year old who isnt typically a museum buff, begged me to bring her back so we can have more time. We will be back.

The museum was highly recommended to us by a staffer at the State Capitol, and we were not disappointed. Its huge, with one floor devoted to local history and a second floor covering local culture. Both sets of exhibits are great, although the cultural stuff is more entertaining (think food, language, Mardi Gras, etc.) while the history is more informative

I wish I could give this 6 stars. We werent even planning on visiting this place, but a volunteer at the New State Capital suggested it. It might be one of the best Museum visits I have ever had. I dont even have much interest in the history of Louisiana, but this was unbelievable. Cost is $6 to get in, but it is more than worth it. They take you through the Purchase, through the various wars, Huey Long, Satchmo, life on the river, history of slavery and food production. They have a full size shrimping boat and combine. That is all on the first floor. The second floor is a walkthrough the various regions of Louisiana with details about the various music, festivals, celebrations, customs, traditions, languages, etc. It was so well done and put together. I cant compliment this place enough. We are planning a second visit because we ended up taking so much time in this place and we still felt we could have spent another hour. Go see this place. Amazing.
