This museum is one of the best maritime museums around, and a great draw for the pretty coastal town of Bath. There is lots to see, my favorite being the woodworking shop where volunteers repair boats and help young students build their own skiffs. We attended an outdoor concert hosted by the Chocolate Church with a fine performance by a Johnny Cash impersonator. A most pleasant evening, masks and all.

We had such a lovely visit to the Maine Maritime Museum! It was fascinating to see the buildings of the old shipyard, and the attention to detail in the exhibits and recreated areas was appreciated. What most stood out though was the enthusiastic and knowledgable staff and volunteers, who all clearly loved working at the museum. Definitely worth a stop!

I visited for my friends’ wedding and was so impressed by the facility and staff. Their event coordinator was so kind and helpful both to their families and guests. She was available during setup, helped make their wedding ceremony and reception run smoothly, and even helped coordinate breaking down all of the decorations and tables. If I lived in the area I would definitely choose this venue for any bigger event!!

Fantastic place to visit! The Maine Maritime Museum is a sprawling property with several building, each with their own fascinating story. Bring the whole family for an educational visit and learn all about the many steps involved in ship-making.Cost is $17.50 per adult, but its well worth it, and youll spend at least two hours exploring without seeing everything.

The museum is nicely done. They have several restored original buildings with interesting displays. The museum also has nicely done displays of shipwrecks, lighthouse light, model ships, etc. You can also take a trolley ride around parts of town and the shipyards. Free Admission during January. Locals and visitors from away can see the core exhibits at no cost. Once youve done that, youll want to plan a visit during warmer weather so that you can explore the outside exhibits and take a boat cruise. This past fall, I took the lighthouse cruise and I highly recommend it.This is a family friendly museum that is easily handicapped accessible. I included some lighthouse tour pictures from the fall.

Such a lovely place... from the moment we arrive and saw the big masts representing the ship that was built there we were mesmerized, but, big place with a lot of exhibits and learning experiences, you can stroll the outside areas enjoying all the shops and work areas only imagining how overwhelming it was I its heyday with all the shops busy at the same time..The indoor parts has so much to offer with the history of the place, all the ships that they built, the new grounds and how the towns economy was based there... very helpful staff and plenty of parking ... dont miss the Iron Works film showing the building process of the modern era destroyers with all the technology...Walk outside and get amazed by the size of the place and what they did in their time...Due to the season, we couldnt take a boat rideEnjoy

If youre in Maine, and w/in a 2 hour driving distance of Bath, please, please, please.....visit this amazing museum. This is a great travel destination for the entire family, and a museum ticket is good for 2 days. This museum not only offers history and present for all things nautical, they also offer incredible day cruises, (additional fees), narrated tours and much more. The gift shop is well run and well stocked. Maine has an incredibly in-depth nautical history, and this museum ensures all have the opportunity to view and enjoy it.

He had a wealth of knowledge in the subject and we were given the opportunity to ask questions. A lot of area to walk around with boards containing detailed information about what you were seeing. Fantastic museum of the history of Maines marine vessels. I have come to this museum since I was a boy, and I am pleased to say the quality has not lessened in the slightest. The Wyoming sculpture gives you a true sense of the massive size of these vessels. Classic displays like the boat launch demo are still going strong. As a part of a long weekend travel experience in Maine for a group of people that I led, one stop during our time in Maine was at the Maine Maritime Museum. I highly recommend the museum to anyone who has an interest in Maines nautical history, ships, sailboats, and how the maritime industry operated in the 18th and 19th centuries. The tours and tour guides were excellent with an abundance of information about the nautical past in Maine. The exhibits were highly educational and I noticed the museum ran different types of programs throughout the year. In addition, you can go on a 3-4 hour lighthouse or coastal cruise, which is well worth the effort. I love this museum and cannot wait to return!

We were visiting from out of town and happened to catch the Maritime Museum on their annual Community Day when they offered free admission and discounted boat tours. What a delightful afternoon! The museum is very well done with interesting exhibits about various aspects of ship building, lobster catching, and light house keeping. Many areas of the museum have informative videos which offer the benefits of a guided tour without the time constraints. The boat tour gave a nice opportunity to see a couple smaller light houses as well the BIW ship harbor. Overall, Id recommend it as an excellent educational family destination.

The museum provides visitors with the opportunity to learn about Maines Maritime history, especially ship building, from the start to today. Somewhere around 5,000 ships, mostly wooden sailing ships of all kinds, have been built in the Bath, Maine area. Destroyers for the US Navy are still built in Bath, Maine.Besides displays in the modern museum, Craftsmen in legacy buildings explain and demonstrate skills necessary to fabricate sailing ships, the largest of which could haul 6,000 tons of coal.Land and sea tours are also available. One sea tour takes passengers upriver past the Bath Iron Works where 3 destroyers are presently being built. Another tour goes downriver to the coast. Yet another provides the experience of being a passenger on a 1906 schooner still in service. The museum is staffed by volunteers who are knowledgeable and friendly. As a bonus, Bath is a wonderful community to spend some time in.

Beautiful location, knowledgeable staff, and tons of history of the shipbuilding industry in Maine. Who knew that the most complete existing shipyard that had built wooden ships was sitting right there in Bath, ME? There are only a couple of other standing shipyards like it in the world today. We went on the shorter boat tour, with the captain giving us interesting tidbits along the way. We also got as close to Bath Iron Works as we could. How many people can say theyve come within spitting distance from a Navy stealth destroyer? I can say that now.

Any maritime museum, big or small, is like a magnet to me. It speaks not only of the sea, and the men and ships that sailed on it, but of the communities on the shore - shipbuilders, marine suppliers, and many others that kept seagoing trade afloat. The Maine Maritime Museum is well worth a visit, located in the heart of the coast where the Down Easters were built, the ships that sailed the seas of the world.

Ive struggled with the thought of reviewing this museum simply because I dont find the subject matter interesting enough, which isnt the museums fault. Every corner of this place is immersive, educational, relevant, and thorough. We were a little disappointed in the historical boat collection - for some reason, we thought there would be a little more substance and story behind the boats featured. Something else we found disappointing was the lighthouse light. You can walk right up to it but you cant go inside. You would think in a controlled environment with such an emphasis on immersion that you could be permitted to go inside the light, especially since its located just off the watchful eye of the attendants and curators, numerous in the lobby. Shrug. Since most visitors to the Maine coast will see lobster boats and the fishermen working, you might be interested to see the lobstering section of the museum. The wall of buouys is a work of art in itself. Even if you dont go downstairs, go in the stairwell and check out the random lobster ephemera. Its like they knew these things belonged here, somewhere, and didnt know where to display them, so they stuck them in a stairwell. So in this stairwell, you have clippings of Lobsterman (the superhero)comic book, lobster tail corset patterns, and all sorts of lobster miscellany. Its kind of a hoot. If you love all things maritime, you will absolutely love this place, and thats its aim, so for that reason, Ill give it 5 stars. Definitely leave the kids at home; if you arent into boating and nautical history, there is little for you here.
