This museum even if small is filled up with real cool stuff not only strictly related to the Route 66. The entrance is free and the volunteers working there are very happy to give informations and to talk about the history of this famous route. The shop has very nice gifts. The time spent here is very worth.

Free entry into the museum. Such a wonderful mix of items from the past. Plenty of variety, not just car stuff. They also sell souvenirs and some helpful travel information. We also made a small donation for the volunteers and the upkeep of the museum.

A worthwhile stop that is 3.5 miles from interstate 15. Most of the history is about Barstow, but there is a lot of Route 66 stuff. Plus you get to visit the free railroad museum next door.

Cool place with an interesting history of American transport, particularly cars and trains. According to the website, the place is run entirely by volunteers as well. Lots of stuff in the gift shop, a good assortment of memorabilia for the collector.

Barstow, Calif.Small museum up in barstow by the harvey house. Has a small gift shop. The site itself is cluttered with artifacts, signs, paper clips, a mustang, couple old motor bikes and a pinball machine.Good for kids.Calling it mother is a stretch.Location: A10 min from I-15.Roads/Parking: APlenty and free.Cost: AFree.Overall: ANothing to travel thousands of miles for. Ideal if your commuting to/from vegas or to/from grand canyons to so cal.Notable nearbys:Located at the Harvey House.Train museum and planet exhibition is walking distance.Back way to Big Bear, Morongo/Palm Springs and Fort Irwin.Nearby up the street is the Discovery/Geology Museum, Mojave River Museum and Historic DT Barstow where Roys cafe and bunch of Rte 66 signs are.Barstow also has a huge outlets that is famous for Asian tourists.Safe traveling.@cigarcpa.

A forgotten jewell of history that has plenty of interesting highlights. Includes one of the remaining Harvey Houses that date back to the first transcontinental railroad. Interesting railroad display, route 66 museum, and even a NASA display from the nearby Deep Space Network Goldstone tracking complex. Easy access off I-15

To see a Harvey House was a real treat. The bldg was restored wonderfully. The active railyard and Amtrak stop further fueled our imaginations of a train stopping and folks coming in to a meal. The photos on the dining room walls gave a sense of what would have taken place. However no recreation of workers quarters, or a working facility are there. We were there the day route 66 museum was closed. A good portion of upstairs is taken up by NASA display, not an interest of ours. Still a nice stop and place to visit. Lots of RR rolling stock to wander and see.

Lovely museum! You can take good pictures there. They have a big motorcycle and an old car. You can get cool souvenirs from Route 66 too! The owners give you a lot of facts about that route, the history, good moments, sad moments. Please, buy something there, definitely worth it! And... Its cheaper compared to Las Vegas, NV.

If you crossed the country in the 60s or maybe even earlier, this place will take you back there. Its not real large (the Route 66 portion) but it is really full of some neat stuff. Theres things from WWII to what you would like to think is current events (70s- 80s). That depends on your age. Its an example of current events for an older history teacher. I wanted to buy some of the signs and tourist merchandise but I refrained because I dont know what to do with it when I get home. There is a train section of museum adjoining which is part of this travel town. I had other destinations and didnt take time to check it out.

We visited the lovely Desert Museum in Barstow and were encouraged to bring our kids to the Route 66 Museum. Everyone was excited as we entered but we were greeted at the door by 2 very sour faced gentlemen who promptly told us that the museum is not meant for children and we needed to make sure they didnt touch anything. Then they proceeded to have a conversation about why anyone would bring kids to a museum like this. I never saw a sign saying no kids allowed but we did not stay long. The area outside the museum is lovely with a great railroad museum and a historic rail yard.
