Now is the time to go here!! Reservations are required because of Covid, and they are easy to do online. This was my third visit over a period of about 20 years and being able to walk around the house on your own is a unique experience. The curator waited in the small gift shop at the entrance while we walked around on our own. The curator was incredibly knowledgeable and provided great stories and information.

It isnt their fault, but this museum is attached to some depressed-looking housing projects. Across the street from (presumably) gentrified housing projects. The neighborhood doesnt feel unsafe (tho at night, use caution, like in any city), but run down. Its sad to see how the elite of Baltimore used to live in this neighborhood, and now its fallen into disrepair.Closed for COVID. I dont know if Id go back. It feels out of place in this new environment. I guess its fitting, since Poe was the master of creepy.

It was cool to go into an 1800 house that wasnt some mansion to see how the regular folks lived. The woman running the place knew her Poe. Probably was disappointed that we all knew so little! I would rate it a five but the man left behind so few artifacts there was not much to see that was Poe. Also for Baltimores favorite son, the city only kept half the house! Worth the trek to the projects.

Although Edgar Allan Poe lived in a wide range of houses from Boston to Richmond over the course of his short life, only three are extant today and all are museums. This particular home dates from approximately 1830 and was rented by an aunt whom he lived with from 1833 to 1835, along with cousins, one of whom he would marry just a few years later. Several early stories were penned here. The house, of course, is very small and historically accurate, so dont expect a lot of headroom or central AC. The value for the visitor is to stand in the same space where he lived and dreamed. There are some interesting exhibits, including items which must have been used by the great writer. The bedroom at the top, presented as his, may not have been. It is furnished with period pieces which did not actually belong to him. Helpful, friendly staff. In total, a 15 to 20-minute visit. This is the maximum you want to stay because there is a real risk of crime on the street and in the larger neighborhood. Nice gift shop. A must-see for any visitor to Baltimore with literary interests. History is indebted to Poe Baltimore, the governing institution, for preserving our cultural patrimony.

This will sound so ODD and will certainly date me!I have lived in Michigan my entire life. I am now 65 years old. When I was young girl, every year my parents took our family on a two week vacation/car trip to various places across the United States. My mother, a stay at home Mom, would spend months planning each trip. Once she chose what part of the country, what states we would drive through, she would find places of interest for us to visit. Often these were historical sites and museum. She loved history. I do not recall the year or how old I was, but for whatever the reason I have always remembered the Edgar Allan Poe House. During a conversation with my husband one evening, talking about what I recalled about E. A. Poe, I decided to Google. The pictures I found were like a trip back in time. It was exactly like I remembered it. I do have a question I would love to have the answered. The tour guide was a very sweet elderly lady that told use about Mr. Poe as we walked through the home. She showed us the shutters on the inside of the windows, the doors, back and front, and the fireplace had crosses built into them. She told me that Mr. Poe was very superstitious and the crosses kept ghost and spirits out of the home. I have never forgotten her telling me about that and I wonder if this is true. Im thrilled and impressed that his home has been preserved and still is open to the public to this day. I have a memory of a flower garden that was very nice and well tended but I believe that memory was from visiting Mr. Poes grave. It was so very long ago but most of my memories of the home were spot on. Amazing!

This was a small glimpse into Edgar Allan Poe’s life—but I wish that it had something more proximate to him. Maybe some of his handwriting, or letters to him or something like that. Right now it felt a bit too “here’s things of his period” than here are things related to him. Most moving part of the exhibit were vinyl quotes about the author that people wrote about him.

First things first, please remember that this is a historic building. Its very small-- for reference, Im just over 5 foot tall and very thin, and I fit perfectly in the stairways and rooms without having to duck. You may not be so lucky, but youll probably be alright if your group is small and you are very patient. Its also not fitted with central air, so when its hot out you may want to avoid going in. They have fans and such scattered throughout, and Im used to not having AC, so I was comfortable but another person there got a little ill, so be careful. Theres no dedicated parking as it is in a residential area, but you can find on-street parking pretty close with low rates (I seriously have never seen parking rates that low) and the meters accept cards. The place is small, as mentioned before, and so there isnt a lot to explore inside-- but the people inside are so knowledgeable that it almost doesnt matter. There are signs on the wall with very detailed information about the area, what it probably looked like when Poe lived there, and neat insights about Poe and his relatives. The gift shop is so sweet, and its definitely worth the time to visit if youre in the area or a big Poe fan.Best of all, Poes grave is nearby. Its pretty much walking distance, and its beautifully kept. Bring some pennies to leave at his tombstone, but be cautious when walking around because the graves arent all obvious. The details on many of the other stones, particularly some of the farther back ones, are extremely interesting. Also there are some things in the site that are kind of hidden-- tucked under buildings or obscured by bushes and the like. Definitely a good way to follow up a visit to the Poe House.

A must-see stop for any Edgar Allan Poe fan! Anyone else might not like it as it is a very small museum for the price you pay. With reading everything and waiting to go upstairs to see his bedroom, it was a total of about 30 minutes (maybe less) spent there. They do have a lot of great stuff in the shop when you go in, so if you are only looking for souvenirs/shopping, you can do so without also paying to go into the house. Please support this place with either buying from the shop, paying to go into the house, or with donations! The staff was very friendly and helpful, too! And no, no restroom. Super cool place to visit! I went on a whim with a friend, and it was awesome. I will say though, it is not in the “best part of town.” We walked from about a half mile away, and were cat-called, had things shouted at us out of car windows, and had someone follow us while shouting crude things at us. I would suggest an Uber/Lyft/Taxi for sure. But once you’re there, it’s an awesome place to walk around. The house is lined with lots of facts about Poe’s time there and even his whole life. I though we only walked around for about ten minutes, and when I looked at my watch it had been an hour! Great time!

I mean itty bitty, like tiny house trend small, and there is practically nothing in it. Several of the few things they do have may or may not have actually belonged to Mr. Poe. First, fragile white folks, the neighborhood is fine. We didnt feel threatened or at all in danger. Good Lord, people, spend a few more minutes away from suburbia; it would do you good. The museum itself is great. Honestly, its mostly just a tiny house, but the volunteer staff are AMAZING. The tiny house itself, and the various artifacts and the quotes on the wall are cool. But the staff make it worth the trip. Theyre full of knowledge--including stories much less well known--about Poe and his family. As others have indicated, they also know a good bit about Baltimore and the surrounding area, and gave us some great tips for other sights to see and things to do. And theyre eager to take questions and make the experience personal.I highly recommend it. Buy some stuff in the little gift shop too, so that this work is supported and can continue. Theyve got a good collection of Poe-worthy (interesting and slightly odd) memorabilia.
