Located on Camp Mabry Base - so be prepared to go thru gated, secure entrance and provide ID. Simple process. Had to drive down a meandering lane thru the base. Parking was very easy. There were spaces right in front. All on one level. We went on a Saturday. No entrance fee. But we did purchase some things in the gift shop as a donation. This place is a wealth of knowledge and has some amazing exhibits! We spent about 3-4 hours there. Lots of details to read, videos to watch, presentations to listen to. The museum is split between US history and Texas history. Has a good sampling of planes, equipment from each branch of service. Great outdoor display of tanks and other military vehicles. Be sure not to miss! A true gem if you are interested in history! Definitely worth a stop!

My boyfriend and I went here on a date. It was very cool and interactive as well. There was much too see, from planes, to trucks and tanks. We got too sit in a cockpit, and you also have the option to try on some Uniforms. So very neat all around. The historical sections are great for learning and visualizing everything that happened in historical wars or major events. There was also a cute little shop for suvanears and gifts. This museum was probably the better part of that day in Austin.

Thank you to our men and women in uniform for your service. So glad to have this experience and be able to bring our young kids along. We arrived at approximately 11a and didnt leave until 12:43p. We took our time and really could have spent more time if our kids were not ready to go (theyre young 5,7,10, dont really understand fully yet). I encourage anyone who visits to donate, as we did, even though its free. Dont forget to see the support vessels and planes outside nearby. Just need you drivers license to get passed security. BTW keep your kids OFF the exhibits.

My sons really enjoy going to this Museum since the last time weve been they have added new sections. We went on museum day and they got to make dog tags which they enjoyed doing. Customer friendly nice people working there. When you first enter you do go through an ID check at the gate before you can get to the museum which makes Safety and Security much better. They even have a new section where kids can try on some gear and uniform jacket.

Despite ongoing renovations, the Texas Military Forces Museum is well worth the visit. I really enjoyed talking with the volunteers, and learning about the role of Texas throughout US military history. Especially considering its free admission, this is a must-see museum for anyone interested in military history while in Austin. 10/10.When I first walked into the museum, my eyes were immediately drawn to the impressive vehicle collection spanning service from WWI through the Korean war. Its easy to spend all of your time staring at these vehicles, but I really enjoyed walking through the many detailed exhibits - on one side, telling the story of the 36th Infantry Division from its inception in WWI through its victory in WWII and, on the other, the story of Texas involvement in the military from the Texas Revolution through the Civil War, and on into the War on Terror. Once youve taken in the internal exhibits, be sure to step outside to Armor Row to see a variety of tanks, logistics vehicles, and artillery. As someone that just stared down the barrel of an M1A1 Abram, I never appreciated the intimidating presence of these beasts until now.

I dont think I can adequately describe just how AWESOME this place is!! When you first walk in you dont quite realize how MASSIVE it is, because they layed it out such a way that each time period has its own room/area, which leads into another...and another... The experience was amazing. Got to see different types of tanks out there and learn some history of US. There were some helicopters as well. A car. Inside there is also a library where you can read books about US war and stuff mostly written through the eyes of soldiers and some directly written by themselves. You also get to sit inside a cockpit simulator but the seating is not large and meant for kids i suppose. Some tanks are kept on the backside of the museum. International tourist must keep passport with them as the museum is in secured military base and wont be given entry without ID.

This is a great hidden gem inside Austin. Note you have to enter the military base to get there. Make sure all adults have a photo ID, and just tell the guard you are going to the museum and he will give directions from there. The museum is free, and there is quite a bit to see inside (donations accepted). Be sure to investigate all the areas, because the second half is hiding down a more narrow walkway in the back.Outside are a number of tanks, artillery, and a few other vehicles. It wasnt clear if kids could climb up on them, but I let my boys look up in a few vehicles and no one said anything. On Veterans Day they also had a live show. My boys (4 and 7) both had a lot of fun.

This state military museum has quite a few interesting exhibits if you are interested in military history and memorabilia. There are many Jeeps, tanks, armored cars, helicopters, planes, and other historical items on view. There is no admission fee. The staff are very helpful and friendly and there is a small gift shop on site with many inexpensive books and gifts for the history or military buff. I gave it a lower rating because it was fairly difficult to find although the military servicemen at the gate gave fairly good directions you have to drive on to the base and really look for the sign.

The men in our party loved the museum, and it wasn’t boring for the women. We were there on a day when school groups were going through, so when we were trying to enjoy the rooms with Texas military history from the 19th century, it was hard to concentrate due to the loud presentations going on for the elementary kids. The docents were helpful and friendly. What I enjoyed most was driving down the row of old tanks outside. I had hoped the museum would have more airplanes, but the few airplanes were located a distance away from the museum, on display too far for us to walk to. There was one plane inside the museum where you could climb into the cockpit. It was a good experience overall.
