Super small and not a lot of art to call a museum in my opinion. 7.00 just to walk a few feet. The gift shop was nice and tons of cool items. The staff was incredibly RUDE. The little girl at the gift shop register was miserable and unwelcoming. Not to just to our group, but others I witnessed. I noticed theres been other reviews about a girl in the gift shop being rude. Her daddy must own it, cant get fired and miserable cause of it. Just my guess, why else would they keep such bitterness on staff. I was embarrassed she was a representation of the Mexican culture at such a place that supposed to celebrate and educate on my roots. Shame.

We went for my sons culture project in high school Spanish class. I thought it was going to be a museum. I guess it is, but the display was on day of the dead, dia de muertos. There were lots of example dead person altars, build in remembrance of a lost loved one. Lots of culture for sure. A bit freaky for us, topped off with some parade float stuff form keep austin weird parades. However, we got the story we needed for my sons project and report. Unfortunately, one exhibit showed the establishments true colors. It was an exhibit about innocent and kind people being treated unfairly when they enter the american border illegally. There as a figure of a boy in what looked a nacho libre outfit, representing the plight of all children against white people and walls. Weird and liberal. Did not appreciate the politics. But hey, it was free. Probably wont go back.

This museum caught my eye walking by, and I was blown away by the pieces inside. I loved how local art was displayed and highlighted. The themes were moving and spoke to me. As a native Texan and Latina, this experience was humbling and inspiring. Whatever walk of life you come from, please stop by and see what meaning you glean from this special gallery. Whether youre looking for beauty, emotion, or something else, youll walk away with something important.

This small museum is well worth a visit. At certain times of the year, elaborate Mexican shrines to the dead are on display, made by family members, and every one is different, as it will feature objects that had meaning to the departed. Some will be very personal and poignant, and some funny. All are colorful and interesting.I was pleased that you are allowed to take photographs. Ive visited twice, different years, and the displays were entirely different. There is also a section with items for sale at very reasonable prices. A good place to find a momento to take home for yourself, or for a friend or family member. The staff are friendly, and the experience is delightful. It is great for what it is, but it is a small place, which is the only reason I didnt rate it five stars.

Review №32

I would say this is more of a small collection of items than a museum. The largest portion of the exhibit was a border wall themed area where you can write a message on a bandana and tie it to the wall. The other was an area dedicated to the recent tragedy at the mall in Texas. Personally would have liked to have seen more about artists and culture and less political commentary. Frida was all over the gift shop. Nowhere in the museum proper.

I was visiting from NY, so had no idea of what to expect. Mexic-Arte is a small pocket museum, where you can walk thru the gallery in a handful of minutes. But I took more time to read the placards and really look at the photos and artwork. I came away with more understanding and depth of culture. I think it was time well spent. If I lived nearby, I like to come by on a regular basis, as I am sure that the exhibits chnage from time to time.

Lots of interesting and beautiful Mexican art. Also great for souvenirs however had to give it one star because we just felt very unwelcomed from the second we walked in the door. We said hello to the young lady sitting at the counter. Her acknowledgement was to look up and give us a nasty look. We were the only people in the store for about 10 minutes and she never spoke a word or looked up or smiled. We left without buying anything. It was really uncomfortable

This is a fantastic, if small, collection of Mexican and Chicano/a art. I was lucky to be here right after the Dia do los Muertos parade in Austin and they had several of the floats on display, as well as several ofertas. I particularly enjoyed the explanation of the meaning of each of the parts of the ofertas. I was able to learn a lot which has increased my appreciation of the holiday. There was also an excellent collection of prints. I know the place is small and the exhibits vary often, but if you enjoy Latin culture this is a must-see. Great value too, $7 admission.
