Its a cool place to go for a walk and see some pronghorn. The trails are very easy to follow and you can hike however long you want to. The staff is super helpful, very little shade though so bring water!

The PCC - the Plains Conservation Center - is a great place, with a very strong program for school visits. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful, too. I’ve taken my students to the PCC for many years - perhaps almost twenty. The visits have always been enthralling for my fourth graders, with activities that are fun and educational. And memorable. Students learn a great deal about the Cheyenne culture, about pioneer life, about the Plains ecosystem. It can be a wonderful beginning for a social studies unit or science program, and it can also make for a wonderful culminating event. As they learn, the students enjoy themselves. They marvel at the soddie and the one-room schoolhouse, they enjoy the nearness of the farm animals, they wonder at the wildlife (including snakes), they thrill to the wide-open horizon (especially is weather is coming in). I’ve felt a bit sad, over the years, as new homes have sprung up to the south and west of the facility. The Plains Conservation Center remains, nonetheless, a remarkable place, and it is well worth visiting.

Came here with my sons preschool class for a field trip. It was a guided tour, and our tour guide was very educated and patient with the children. They have tee pees set up, just like they would have been used on the plains. All of the implements were in place, and were carefully explained to all of us. Daily life was expressed, with an emphasis on what the role of children would be (for our young guests). They also have a sod house, which was very informative for the adults in our group, as well as the children. Again, daily implements were handled and explained. Daily life was emphasized. Things like the great dust bowl were talked about, and the impact that it had on the families that lived on the plains. I believe that this is a very educational and interesting place that is very often overlooked by residents. There is a wealth of knowledge here, and its well worth a visit to learn about what happened on our land long before the suburbs took over. Especially if you have children, GO! Youll all have a wonderful time and learn a lot in the process.

Today was the first day Ive been to the Plains Conservation Center since the City of Aurora took over operations.I love the fact that Aurora hauled sheep onto the conservatory as a natural lawn maintenance. If you get a chance head down the trail to the homesteaders location. The sod homes are extremely interesting and a reminder of how difficult the west was to settle for 19th century settlers.Since there is very little to no cover from the elements Id suggest checking the weather before heading out on any trails. High winds, rain and hail, or even just the unbridled punishment of the summer sun can ruin an otherwise fun experience.

Im as a nature and history lover, couldnt miss the opportunity to visit this place. Its a small center but full of interesting things to investigate. A quick stroll west brings you to an area of full-size teepees where you can see how theyre built, what they look like inside, and how the inhabitants would have used what was available to live on the land.

We went to see the farm animals. This was my first time, but my son takes his kids a lot since theyre right across the street from it. It was their first time this year. They had 5 turkeys, about a dozen chickens, about 6 sheep and 2 donkeys (one had open wounds on its front legs and was trembling). Last year there were pigs and cows also. The grandkids were disappointed that there wasnt much to see and we were on our way out when two different vehicles went past, the 2nd in an Aurora city truck stopped to let us know that this was a fee based area that has guided tours ($3.00 for adults, $2.00 for kids over 2) which my son and I noted there werent any signs for. Maybe we missed them? We asked about why there werent as many animals as last year and she said The farmer last year wasnt taking care of them so they decided to go with ones that didnt need as much care. When this was her response I brought up the injuries to the donkey that she seemed oblivious to and said donkeys tremble in order to keep the flies off. This was a different kind of tremble than that, in my opinion. But if I were that donkey, I would have been trying extra hard to keep the flies from laying eggs in my open wounds! I hope they got this animal the vet care it needed. It is a beautiful area that they could do so much more with, lots of trails, teepees, and farm equipment. I wouldnt mind paying the money if you were able to feed the animals or something and/or if there were more of them. They also need to expand the hours because if you go back on some of those trails there is no way any human that I know of could walk them in the small window of time that isnt in the blazing heat of the day. Maybe they could set up a picnic area with a couple of gazebos halfway through the trails to rest so if you do go during the heat of the day you have somewhere to rest? Wine tasting parties? So much could be done to show off this beautiful conservatory.

Gotta love the PCC! One of the only sites dedicated to preserving the heritage, and ecosystems of the Great Plains in Colorado. They have a great visitors center to learn about the history of the area and the people who have called it home as well as a Sod Village and Tipi Village where you can explore for a small fee. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area or looking to learn more about the Great Plains.

Have been trying to call for the past 3 days! Decided to take the kids and go anyway. Went through gate, followed parking signs, parked, finally found visitors center (not anywhere near parking area) went in visitors center. NO ONE was there! WAITED 45 MINITES for signs of human life and no one! Is it open? Are they closed? Where they on a tour? When would they be back? No signs to let anyone know anything! I could have taken a flat screen TV, Buffalo head, many stuffed animals and artifacts from the 1800 that they had on display in the visitors center, a projector for a film viewing . Unless your a psychic I would NOT recommend this place!
