Lived almost my whole life in auburn and never been inside. Tonight for the first time went to a drag queen show. Yes Im straight and had a great time with my gf. Just to have the courage to stand up in front of people and say this is who iam is amazing. The singing, dancing and funny jokes made it a great time. If you are looking for a great show and nothing weird then go check it out. My hats off to all the performers.

Awesome venue for music, theater, movies, and all kinds of community events. I saw Leo Kottke here and it was one if the best small shows I have ever seen. Check out open Mic night on Tuesday nights and see some great local talent. By the way, this is the place that single-handedly began the revival of downtown Auburn. Give it your support!

Progress accelerates at Auburn Public Theater. Play tonight is perfect for Black History Month. Cinema has continually good programming. Livingston Taylor sold out. Bar serves us micros & Finger Lakes wine quickly. Grants will allow more space to be dedicated to arts programming. Staff has a lot of game, taking proud ownership of the center. Looking forward to many more visits. Now if we can add this team to the Schine Theater restoration team.Last night, I returned to Auburn New York for a second weekend, the second weekend in a row.I thought to see the play, for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf.I had know about it for years, pretty much since it came out in the late Seventies.A woman who attended my high school had read it for class. The Byron High School library kept a copy in its library.I wanted to experience the Auburn Public Theater on a night when the house wasnt crowded.Ill have to go again. The play didnt sell out, but the theater filled many seats, enough to call the show a success.I bought a ticket from a man whose wife couldnt attend.I didnt have to sit by him either because the house was general admission for the night. So I sat in the front row, close to the stage, close enough to have to pull back my feet when the actresses descended from the stage to sashay among the audience.None of the actresses had experience on the stage, but with great direction, the nine women carried the show well.In the talk back after the show, the group contemplated staging another classic of African American theater.I thought about Harriet Tubman, who lived half a century in Auburn New York. After the dangerous turn as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, Tubman settled into farming on land she bought just south of town. She churn milk fat into butter. She took care of a houseful of men and women who retired to her home with a long porch. She sold vegetables, pork and dairy by the side of the road.In her nineties, she finally moved into the rest home and allowed the helpers she had hired to take care of her.Who will take this story, turn Harriets story into a play?Auburn now has the actresses to make that play take life.
