A nice experience with limited exposure. This was my first trip to the theater so its fairly limited. I like popcorn slot and opted for the $20 bucket which includes a lid that doubles as a sharing bowl. The bucket comes with a card which allows two additional refills on future visits which brings the net cost for each down to $6.67 each... easy better than the $9 large (but smaller) paper bucket. Butter is optional. The movie we saw was in theater 4 which requires you to exit through the front, follow an alley down the dive and enter through a side door. The theater is on the smaller side, but the screen and speakers were adequate and clear. My only real disappointment was the adjacent film was very loud and downed out some of the quiet dialog in my theater. Otherwise, the theater was comfortable. Ill consider returning when another movie lures me in. Staff were friendly too and tough to breast the $5 Tuesday ticket prices.

Ancient movie theater, comfortable seating and cool art deco lighting inside Circa whenever the place was built. Receiving is comfortable and the snacks are inventive with a much better selection than normal theaters. All I could wish for is a wine bar :-)

They let a coughing woman who brought large bags & a pillow and stunk like she hadnt bathed in a month into the back entrance to theater 4 and refused our request to ask her to leave so we could watch the movie without throwing up or catching a sickness! The so-called manager didnt even have the decency to apologize to us. Beware before you plan a night around catching a film here.

I just saw “They Shall not Grow Old” at the Varsity. The theater cut out 30 minutes of special features in which Peter Jackson explains the whole process of making the film. I’ve heard it’s highly worth watching.I didn’t see any warning that I’d be watching an abbreviated version of the film.Very disappointed.

I took my wife, my 15-year-old daughter and her best friend to see a movie. No one was at the ticket box so we went to concessions for our ticket. The guy at the counter asked if any of us were students. I appreciated him asking because I didn’t know they had a discount. When I told him that the—obviously school-age—girls were students he said that he needed to see their student IDs. They had them, and it wasn’t a problem, I just thought it was a weird tone to set over a dollar discount: You think I’m lying? They’re rogue teenagers bucking the law by not attending school? We saw a great movie. The theater was what you’d expect in a small-town “art house:” small screens, old seats, low quality sound. It is what it is and they did a good job with what they have. The movie experience was good. Then…We get out of the movie, my wife uses the restroom, and the girls and I wait in the lobby. Just as my wife come out of the restroom the same employee mentioned above comes over to her, holds up a beer bottle and says, “do you know anything about this?” My wife was clearly a little shocked. [Side note: my wife loves telling people that if you took every drink of beer she’s had in her life it wouldn’t fill one glass. Sad, but true.] Being put off balance my wife gave him a confused “no,” we all soaked in the awkward moment, and then we left. The theater was fine, the amenities were fine, but that one employee made it an uncomfortable experience from end to end. By the time we bought tickets, snacks and drinks we had spent a lot of money in this business. The employees should be trained to show patrons that they appreciate their business, not treat them like they’ve done something wrong.

On 2/25/19 there was no one in the ticket booth and, just guessing, we went to the popcorn counter to purchase tickets. Is this your practice? We tried to see a movie on the screens at the back of the theater. We walked around to the back, only to find our movie wasnt listed. We walked back and were told it was there, but they hadnt bothered to change the signs above the doors?! After again walking around to the back of the theater we were both soaked, as it had been pouring during all this! During the movie I was freezing and had to sit with a jacket over my legs they were so cold. I have never had to watch a movie in the freezing cold before!

They show wonderful movies and I have had some wonderful times. I have also gone when the air goes out and I wonder what they are doing to keep the old building running at its best. The building is great and you go back in time when you see a film here, however some things need to stay current.

Foremost I like the vibe of an old theater and appreciate the nostalgic feel. One thing I’d like to see in a town like Ashland is a selection of local treats offered on the concession menu and a move towards organic popcorn or at least non GMO.Eugene has a couple great little theaters that offer such goods and it compliments the scene.

Super noisy theater. You can hear voices from the lobby throughout the movie, and the movie volume is somewhat low in comparison to the loud, talky movie goers you find on some nights. Its pretty comfortable and old fashioned, and if you can easily tune out loud people, or dont pay very close attention to the movie it is a nice experience.

Overall this is a wonderful theater-going experience. Employees are young, enthusiastic, helpful, and knowledgeable about the movies that are currently showing. And with an anti-capitalistic tip of the hat, they actually have a water fountain where you can get water without buying it! Life is now worth living after all. Haha. The biggest drawback is the mens bathroom. I think by now its notorious along the west coast because it is really, really crummy. It has that old kind of honeycomb, hexagram white tiles from the 1930s and the grout is eroded and the flooring underneath now holds that warm, sultry smell of stale urine. It is crying out for a modest makeover. As it just needs some new tile, new paint, and a new toilet and youre good to go=Perfection at last...

Over the years, the Varsity has been the go-to theatre in Ashland. When I was young, there was only one fairly large room with a pretty large smoking section on the then second floor! An old Ashland Icon (Harry Arnold) owned it and I even remember (70s I remind you) a dude named Rusty Hatchett of Ashland High running the projectors-honest! Today, this place is a blast and right in the middle of downtown Ashland and has been remodeled to have additional theatres and still retain that nostalgic class-and it is a classic! From the very upbeat and courteous manager to every employee Ive encountered there is humility, KINDNESS and a genuine desire to make ones experience wonderful! If you like the theatre, this is an Ashland must.

We always make a stop at The Varsity when were in Ashland. The layout can be confusing with two long auditoriums on the main level as well as a small one tucked upstairs. Out back (yes, you leave the lobby and go down the alley) theres at least one more tiny screen. Small screens but good sound and picture. One could only wish for a major renovation restoring The Varsity to a single massive theater for the arts.

Its shocking to me how many great movies this theater misses despite being an independent arthouse theater. Every year I look forward to arthouse films in the area, and every year Im disappointed by what they decide to leave out. On top of that, instead of playing some of the best arthouse films of the year, they opt to play big budget Hollywood movies just to make the money. I understand if you have to do that to keep afloat, but Id be spending hundreds of dollars at this theater every year if they actually released what was coming out that no other theater would play.Outside of that, the last two experiences I had here the screens had a very strange floating bubble look to them, and it was often very distracting while watching the film. I want to love this place, especially since its my only option in the area, but seriously, who decides what plays here? And why cant they get equipment adequate for the job?
